The subject of the learning reflection essay is my final project for English 102, “Rhetorical Analysis of FDR’s First Fireside Chat”. In this reflection, it will briefly cover 2 specific learning outcomes Critical Thinking and Oral Communication. First, for the critical thinking outcome, I will cover how I learned and gathered evidence and on the rhetorical analysis, and how chose to integrate it into the final project. Finally, I will sum up what I learned for oral communication, specifically how I learn to effectively communicate my ideas and how to organize my ideas for my project.

The article, “Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge” by Diane Ravitch, discusses how in the past people have been deprived from the thinking process and abstract thinking skills. Students need to be given more retainable knowledge by their teachers to improve their critical thinking skills. (Ravitch).
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In this module I learned about the meaning of a rhetorical situation, how to analyze one, what is the importance of analyzing one, the features that one should conceder while doing so. Also I learned that each rhetorical situation can be analyzed by the communicator or by a member of the audience. I think that it is important to analyze a rhetorical situation to get better understanding of the topic delivered. In this module I managed to analyze an example of a rhetorical situations very well, at first I didn’t understand all the features of the analyzing process, after searching a little bit, and working on the assignments it became more clear.
It can be argued that knowing the truth is vital in unfortunate circumstances that would only bring unease and despair. In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, citizens are constantly sheltered from anything that would bring unhappiness. Society feels that people should be unaware of how horrible life is. In the section, “Ethical Issues,” from the article, “Genetic Testing,” NYU Langone Medical Center uses logos, ethos and pathos to aide in conveying the ethical issues that arise because of genetic testing. The author mainly uses logos to support their purpose because it allows the author to efficiently demonstrate his knowledge on the topic. One example of logos is found in page 6, where the author references Chloe’s law to provide a solution to an ethical issue that arose because of genetic testing (Genetic Testing 6). Preparation is the foundation of success; it reflects on my characteristics and work ethics as a student. It also clears the road block in my mind to become a better critical thinker and is beneficial in the future.
