The subject of the learning reflection essay is my final project for English 102, “Rhetorical Analysis of FDR’s First Fireside Chat”. In this reflection, it will briefly cover 2 specific learning outcomes Critical Thinking and Oral Communication. First, for the critical thinking outcome, I will cover how I learned and gathered evidence and on the rhetorical analysis, and how chose to integrate it into the final project. Finally, I will sum up what I learned for oral communication, specifically how I learn to effectively communicate my ideas and how to organize my ideas for my project.
For the two learning outcomes that I benefited the most from are critical thinking and oral communication. First, critical thinking presented a unique challenge
The tone during the whole plot of in Brave New World changes when advancing throughout the plot, but it often contains a dark and satiric aspect. Since the novel was originally planned to be written as a satire, the tone is ironic and sarcastic. Huxley's sarcastic tone is most noticeable in the conversations between characters. For instance, when the director was educating the students about the past history, he states that "most facts about the past do sound incredible (Huxley 45)." Through the exaggeration of words in the statement of the director, Huxley's sarcastic tone obviously is portrayed. As a result of this, the satirical tone puts the mood to be carefree.
The article, “Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge” by Diane Ravitch, discusses how in the past people have been deprived from the thinking process and abstract thinking skills. Students need to be given more retainable knowledge by their teachers to improve their critical thinking skills. (Ravitch).
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). The author indicates that there are three essential parts to provoke a rhetorical response, which are exigence, audience, and constraints. He hints at other parts and conditions of providing a rhetorical response, but these three are illustrated as completely necessary.

Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
In this module I learned about the meaning of a rhetorical situation, how to analyze one, what is the importance of analyzing one, the features that one should conceder while doing so. Also I learned that each rhetorical situation can be analyzed by the communicator or by a member of the audience. I think that it is important to analyze a rhetorical situation to get better understanding of the topic delivered. In this module I managed to analyze an example of a rhetorical situations very well, at first I didn’t understand all the features of the analyzing process, after searching a little bit, and working on the assignments it became more clear.
In the section, “Ethical Issues,” from the article, “Genetic Testing,” NYU Langone Medical Center uses logos, ethos and pathos to aide in conveying the ethical issues that arise because of genetic testing. The author mainly uses logos to support their purpose because it allows the author to efficiently demonstrate his knowledge on the topic. One example of logos is found in page 6, where the author references Chloe’s law to provide a solution to an ethical issue that arose because of genetic testing (Genetic Testing 6). In this case, a family was able to pass a law to help give positive information to those families that were “terminating pregnancies because of a Down Syndrome diagnosis” (Genetic Testing 6). 22) in order to use critical thinking. The difficulty that I faced is definitely solvable. With this insightful guideline, I will become a critical thinker. Preparation is the foundation of success; it reflects on my characteristics and work ethics as a student. It also clears the road block in my mind to become a better critical thinker and is beneficial in the future. After reading the short section on what critical thinking involves, I feel that I am already a different critical thinker. I immediately began to analyze and seek additional information that would help me succeed on writing this paper assignment. Most importantly, I learned the closet meaning of critical thinking and what I need to do to become a better critical thinker.

We were asked to specify our personalized outcomes in the beginning of the year, one of the most important parts of this for me was critical thinking. Critical thinking is an easy phrase to understand however is a more difficult process to actually follow through with. I wanted to find multiple senses of the text. Seminar taught me skills in which I have become more comfortable with analyzing a text. For example, through asking questions and annotating my book I have been able to understand more of the author’s intentions. In class when discussing Virginia Woolf’s “ How to read a book” I added more than twenty annotations to my book during the discussion.
