Effective technical writing is essential in the workplace especially in my nursing career. It is important throughout our interactions in any aspect of our daily life. Looking back at the readings, learning exercises, and assignments for the past five weeks, this class helped me build more confidence and competence in communicating in my work place. I became mindful of the format and content of my documentation and how I communicate with my patients. I find the concept of Audience Analysis memo is beneficial to my job. Everyday, I deal with culturally diverse patients and knowing how to analyze and approach my specific target audience affects the efficiency of conveying my message such as, educating family members and giving instructions before procedures and after discharge. Moreover, I realized that most of my documents that I present to my patients are informative and persuasive at the same time like when I am presenting them consents and waiver forms to perform a procedure.
Of all the the knowledge and skills that I have acquired in Nursing school, technical writing is one of the most important and useful. My ability to communicate greatly influence my personal life and professional life as well. The Audience Analysis memo taught me to have

The potential profession I am going to pursue is Radiology. Radiology deals with taking x-rays of the body and diagnosing what you find wrong. How the radiology unit works is getting a patient and having the radiologist technician take images of the body by using machines. Different types of machines such as, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET), identify all the images being taken of the human body (Phillip Costello, 2014). After the images have been taken they are sent to the radiologist to be interpreted. After being interpreted the patient is then told their diagnoses. Each of these steps involves writing in a certain form. Writing is a form of communication in the radiology unit so it must be specific and clear for someone else to interpret.
This rhetorical analysis is on the instructions on “How to Use Adobe Photoshop Tools” from WikiHow and to critique the use of the six characteristics of technical communication and the measures of excellence in technical communication as stated by Markel in the ninth edition of Technical Communication.

Even though the majority of hospitals and health care facilities are computerized, the charge nurse has to communicate with a multitude of health care professionals during every shift. Society’s strong reliance on technology emphasizes the importance of electronic writing and communication for all nurses. Throughout the shift, the charge nurse will have to send urgent text messages and emails to their supervisor or coworkers to ensure everything is running smoothly on the floor. Even though email and text might be thought of as informal communication, writing skills must be professional when speaking with superiors and coworkers to maintain an appropriate appearance (Knab,
this will cause healthcare providers with the training and education needed for clinical documentation improvements to be installed effectively. It is important that having a specialized team who can create solutions towards Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) in order to minimize the failures that may occur. In this case, investing in training for the materials/tools necessary for healthcare providers to excel in their work with CDI. Essentially, Clinical Documentation is used throughout the healthcare system for the analysis of care, communication, and medical records. This is important because the information of medical records that healthcare providers are able to access, will help patients track their health conditions. Thus, clinical documentation improvement has a direct impact on patients by providing quality information. On the other hand, the new technological advancements will also be able to address the efficiencies in health care system that differ from paper-based charting. Improving on the quality of information will also have the effect upon the ethical and effectiveness of care that is being provided. This has a significant impact in order to maintain patient care that ensures the documentation is accurate, timely, and reflect within the services provided. Documentation assessments can be utilized so there can be improvements on the education for healthcare providers as they intend implementation standards take effect immediately. In this case, failures must be analyzed so that they will have the ability to comprehend and determine an organization’s strengths and weaknesses
“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
In order to be a successful nurse you must first be a good writer. In the process of becoming a nurse you learn to abbreviate many of the medical terms (Lane). The only type of information that may be written in complete sentences is medical reports on patients. Writing is used to complete care plans, charting, reports, articles, discharge notes for patients, case studies and other aspects (Lane). Writing allows nurses to provide proper and safe care for their patients (Lane).
Communication is a major aspect of the nursing field. The nursing student should plan to use effective communication everyday whether they are in class or in the clinical setting. Nonverbal communication is the use of body language, touch and physical appearance, while verbal is the spoken words that have a private meaning (Boykins & Carter, 2012). Communication is used daily in the healthcare setting. For example, communication is used to update fellow nursing staff or doctors about a patient’s condition. If effective communication is not present while providing care, the nurse-client bond will never form. The nursing student should use therapeutic communication to build a relationship with their client. In doing this, the nursing student is showing their concern and care for the client so that they are able to fully trust them and their
Good documentation is very important in the care of patient and nursing practice even in advancement of nursing profession.
Communication in the nursing practice and in healthcare is important because when talking with patients, their families, and staff, the nurse and the nursing student needs to be able to efficiently express the information that they want the other person to understand. “Verbal communication is a primary way of transmitting vital information concerning patient issues in hospital settings” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
Nurse Educators may have the opportunity to choose their setting, however, more often the setting is dictated by their institutions. Instructional methods and materials can include vast varieties. These will be dependent on the setting, the individual learner, the institution, resources available to the educator, topic being presented, and the Educator. Bastable (2014), provides an expansive list of some of the more common instructional methods: lecture, group discussion. one-to-one instruction, demonstration, return demonstration, gaming, simulation, role playing, role modeling, and self-instruction. It is beneficial to note that all of these instructional methods come with both advantages and limitations which educators should take into consideration. Once the instructional method is determined the instructional materials will need to be considered. Examples of instructional materials include pamphlets, books, audiotapes, CDs, videotapes, DVDs, worksheets, video learning, and more (Bastable, 2014). As previously discussed for instructional methods, instructional materials also come with their advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, both instructional methods and materials should be evaluated. Lastly, evaluations can be both formative and/or summative and are essential in the evaluation of the students
Academic writing is a skill that styles your writing to make the piece of work easier to read and to understand. Written communication-Written communication is essential for any care giver in a health and social care setting when writing reports or keeping records. Varied situations require different styles of writing but all require literacy skills. An example of written communication in a health and social care setting, would be a nurse recording information about a patient. It would not be acceptable to use slang
In the article “The Study of Nursing Documentation Complexities”, the multiple authors came together and informed us as readers about the importance of documentation within nursing. Documenting information about the health care plan of a patient is not just for the sole purpose of communicating between healthcare workers. It can also be used for a variety of things, such as helping provide researchers with conducting data, as well as helping the development of education within this field.
