Nursing today has implemented many standards, policies, and procedures that must be followed to ensure quality care for patients. In the healthcare field, The American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Professional Performance is a set of standards that ensures patients receive the highest-quality care available to them. The ANA Standards of Professional Practice requires all health care professionals to understand their specific roles and responsibilities. Communication is a major aspect of the nursing field. The nursing student should plan to use effective communication everyday whether they are in class or in the clinical setting. Nonverbal communication is the use of body language, touch and physical appearance, while verbal is the spoken words that have a private meaning (Boykins & Carter, 2012). Communication is used daily in the healthcare setting. For example, communication is used to update fellow nursing staff or doctors about a patient’s condition. If effective communication is not present while providing care, the nurse-client bond will never form. The nursing student should use therapeutic communication to build a relationship with their client. In the article, Promoting Evidence-Based Practice Through A Research Training Program For Point Of Care Clinicians, the authors state that evidence based practice is, “a problem-solving approach to clinical care that incorporates the conscious use of current best practice from well-designed studies, clinician’s expertise, and patient values and preferences” (Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat, Qian, 2015, p.14). The nursing student should use evidence-based practice in order to make decisions about the patient's care plan.
