What is it that makes me happy? I’ve asked myself this many times. While I don’t have an answer that fits for everyone, I found one for myself. To find an answer to this question, I feel self-reflection and self-evaluation is essential. As I age, I learned that things I thought could bring happiness were mostly short-lived. Chittister states, “Happiness cannot possibly be any of those fleeting transitory things. Happiness is a great deal more than any impulse and its dependence on the mood of the moment…It sees every day through a filter of basic satisfaction” (18). This quote really hit home for me. Regardless whether I feel sad or happy, I always wanted something more, I was looking for the next best thing. It was toxic and seems endless. …show more content…
It would be nice if what I love to do is a well-paying career. However, a well-paying job I lack passion in will lead to endless soul searching and discontentment. To be passionate about what I do is important as it will bring out the best in me and allow me to serve my purpose. I believe I found my purpose, and that is being a great caregiver. I didn’t always know. Some people find their passion earlier in life and pursue it. Some may find it later in life and pursue it. Some may never leave their comfort zone to explore their purpose. For those that don’t pursue their calling, their purpose will pursue them for the rest of their life. Like myself, I started questioning everything I was doing, the reason for doing it and if it was meaningful, which lead me to pursue my calling.
I remembered how unhappy I was when I was trying to identify my gifts and abilities, what career choices would be fulfilling and fitting to my desires. It was then, that I knew having the right career was one of the keys to my happiness. Doing what is purposeful bring satisfaction to my life. This is the type of happiness that is not fleeting, so when all else fail, the peace and happiness in my soul will not wither when I face day to day challenges. Doing what we are meant to be doing does not need to be a job, but it needs to be a part of our

However, to answer to a calling by overcoming the obstacles before us is what will lead to a fulfilling life. Enjoying something is not the same as satisfaction or happiness, but doing something we enjoy can facilitate towards the path of finding that happiness and that's a start (Chittister 49). Chittister also mentioned that when we do what we love, we find happiness in ourselves and the world finds happiness in us (p.45). Happiness is contagious.
When people talk about what their callings are, it tends to be about their careers or whatever that they are doing. However, I feel a calling could also be a called to be in someone's life. Building healthy relationships also bring happiness whether it is someone we connect with emotionally, romantically, or spiritually. We are born to be social. We are not solitary beings, we are a part of society. Contributing to make other people’s life better could include our lover, friends, family, colleagues, and
Thomas Carlyle, a preeminent figure of the Victorian era, said, “The real desire to get work done will itself lead one to more and more to truth” (Carlyle). Many teenagers all over the world rely on jobs to earn money to do fun activities with their friends. There are also many adults who have jobs to get by in life. Along with this, there are people who have a career. The difference between the two is that people who have a job work just to earn money, but do not enjoy it. People who have have a career enjoy their jobs and are very passionate.
Focusing on pursuing a career you like is important because statistics show fifty-two percent of Americans are unhappy going to work every day because they chose a career they didn’t have an interest in. My ideal job is in the medical field because I’ve always had a passion in helping people. I want to specialize in nurse anesthesia because of the important role they have in society. Nurse anesthesia interests me because of the tasks they do, the advanced education path they must take, and the history behind the profession.
Many live attempting to decipher the riddle of life. What is life? What is the purpose? What makes? Even though we only seek happiness why can’t we ever seem to achieve it? When we do reach happiness why can’t we seem to grasp it and hold it for more than the few short hours that pass like seconds? The question we must answer first is “What makes happiness, true?”
“It always seems impossible until it’s done”. This quote from Nelson Mandela comes to mind when describing why I aspire to become a Physician Assistant. It has always been a great motivation and inspired me not to get discouraged with failure; rather look forward for your goals. Frequently, it takes many trials and lack of success as well as achievements, for one to truthfully discover him/herself. I instinctively progressed through the motions of life. Many options were available and choosing a career as I grew up kept altering, until one day when I saw how helping other people is my sole purpose of life. Getting to know more of physician assistant drove me into the thoughts of pursuing it as a career.
As a kid, I recall my parents and many relatives frequently asking, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", and without hesitation, I would think of the coolest occupations. My answers would usually comprise of being a cop, nurse, astronaut or the President of the Untied States. It was difficult to pick one, as there were numerous jobs that held my interest. For some individuals, dream occupations turn into a reality. Often times, the professions we loved growing up becomes a fun memory in the past. Throughout my childhood, my parents valued the significance and importance of regarding and helping other people. Before attending college, I was uncertain of my career plan, however; was one thing I was sure of was: the longing to help, to teach, and/or to positively affect others.
So, release unhappiness and consume happiness. Bye, bye unhappiness, hello happiness. Typically many are consumed by ‘miswanting’ – making decision based on what we think will make us happy (e.g., a new car or home). Now, researchers go one step further to tell us where happiness resides for most of us, as consumers. One study about consumption vs. happiness finds that people are more happy when they spend money on ‘experience’ (travel) instead of material objects (new TV set). The enjoyable experience is what they typically relish. The finding is that spending money for an experience – travel, concerts, or outing, for example – produce longer-lasting satisfaction than spending money on same old plain stuff, TV, car, etc. – especially one
We are all born to live, not to simply exist. Experiences in life have taught me there is a purpose behind each individual’s existence. Discovering this purpose, has been challenging. My educational and professional background have helped shape my immediate and long term professional goals. Becoming an Occupational Therapist has become both my immediate and long-term goals in life.
In “Do What You Love? #@&** That!” by Jeff Haden, he explains how telling people to do what they love in their career is advice that is disastrous. Haden tells his readers that “That advice has probably resulted in more failed businesses than all the recessions combined…because that’s not how the vast majority of people end up owning successful businesses” (qtd. in Haden 463). Haden also mentions that to feel a real sense of passion you have to produce something important, gain respect for it, and feel control over your life (Haden 463). Not everyone agrees to mix passion and their business life together since some people think it’s two completely different things, but somehow someone’s work life becomes a passion without them realizing it has or without them even trying to make their work life a passion. Haden points out that “Passion is not something you follow. Passion is something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to become valuable to the world” (qtd. Haden 463). Even though not everyone chooses to follow their passion, in some way someone ends up doing something they enjoy and later on possibly love. Everyone has a job, some don’t get to choose the job that they specifically want, but they do choose one over another based on what they’ll enjoy more. People may choose
Too often, we become too caught up in our everyday mundane routines that we forget, or perhaps, never truly see what our purpose is. We forget what truly motivates us to live and what truly drives us to reach a greater goal. Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” As I look at the people around me, I see ones who furnish their goals with intents of gaining wealth, success, or recognition. However, are they truly happy? How many times have you actually sat down and asked yourself, “why do I do what I do?”.
Pursuing your passions offers many benefits. The list above is by no means exhaustive. The important point to take away though is that the link between passion, happiness and fulfillment is clear. We all strive to achieve happiness and fulfilment in life. Engaging in activities we feel passionate about will absolutely lead us towards that Promised Land.

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person has to make in their life. It is so important because that is what we will have to do to support ourselves throughout life. Imagine being stuck in a dead end job and having to go to work every morning and dreading it. That is no spending oneÕs time and life is too short to work 35 years and be unhappy with it. If a person likes the job they do then it is not work, because finding satisfaction out of a job can bring great happiness. That information has enabled me to make the decision of choosing my area of study and career in the field of Information Technology.
Happiness can come in different forms for each person. Some people dream of achieving great wealth to buy everything they ever wanted. Others may find simple tasks such as, reading a book, to make them happy. There are people who find happiness by making others happy, whether it’d be, feeding the homeless, or giving random compliments to strangers. I think that most people would agree that the purpose of life is happiness. There are several things that bring happiness to my world, which include, family, health, and laughter, among other things. Accomplishments can also bring happiness to people, which is what many people strive for during their lives. It can be a promotion, diploma, house, etc. It is usually something that is challenging,
