Review of Progress
My strengths as a writer are that my papers are very well developed, they have always been graded and ranged from a high B to an A. I always meet the requirement, but I don't add as much detail as I should. I have a good style and organization. I always make sure to keep my papers in order. All of my papers have spelling errors but is not bad enough for the reader to get confused while reading. Readers can easily follow my papers with no struggles. I use a variety of simple and complex sentences to structure my papers. I do get quite a few comma splices, but never to many run-on sentences or fragments in my paper. My papers do have a good word choice that include imagery and figurative language. I don't use super strong verbs in my papers and I also have grammatical errors in my papers as well.

The writing skills I focused on for each paper were lessening my grammatical errors and working on having better vocabulary as well. I thought I was really good at writing papers until I got to this class and realized I can't half ass anything and I need to take the time into my work. I have always struggled with spelling and commas but I have become much better after first semester. The papers I worked the hardest on in first semester was my Research Paper, and my Profile Essay because I actually took my time on it and had to do extra work than just think of something to write about and type it. I got to interview someone, and do research that will make my paper
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
Before I began the semester, writing papers were not my strong suit. I really did not enjoy writing because I believed it to be a difficult process. More specifically beginning a paper was extremely difficult for me. It was tough to start a paper and put my ideas in an orderly fashion to compose a decent paper. While practicing with writing techniques, I found that listing my thoughts helped me. Prewriting gave me the chance to gather all of my ideas and begin my papers quicker. I
In this paper, I am to write about my strengths and weaknesses in writing. This is not an easy task for me because I have never considered myself a writer. Reading other peoples thoughts are activities that are more my speed. I simply have trouble putting my thoughts into writing. Since, I do not feel that I have many strengths, let's move on to my weaknesses.
I believe my writing skills to be average. In the past, I wrote a lot just for fun and had countless notebooks filled. In high school, I took a newspaper class my first two years as well as the required English classes, and provided articles to be published for our school newspaper. I was also a part of a writing club, which mostly just dealt with prose. Although I wrote a lot, I never proofread my work before turning in a rough draft.
In My past years of writing, I was really good at just writing down ideas and then combining them at the end to all make sense. If we were doing a book essay I was good at reading the book and then interpreting what I read and what I remember. I have more weakness than strengths as a writer. For example, when I would be writing an essay I would have no idea when to stop and when to use a comma or a semicolon. I would use them in my essay
One skill that I wish I had time to improve on is citing sources in MLA style. Through the course, I refused to seek help from my professor until week seven, one thing I regret doing. that could have allayed the fear and doubt I had about this course. Any questions I had could be cleared up as the course progressed. My essays through the subsequent weeks have demonstrated my strength and weaknesses. I do not have many strengths when it comes writing, but still I consider my greatest strength in writing to be being able to clearly understand the prompt and answer it correctly, especially with the analysis essays. I think this is just because I spend most of the scarce time on hand just to think about the prompt, for example, when I was preparing for my rhetorical analysis essay on globalization I thoroughly read both article on globalization by both Kwame Anthony Appiah and franklin Foer .An obvious struggle I have as a writer is organization and transitions. I tend to jump from one topic to another and sometimes cover. I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs to make my reader understand the logic of my paper. I have not had enough writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. I do sometimes admit that it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I become a proficient
We should strive for perfection in all walks of life, but if we are to be successful on life`s journey we must hold these truths to be self-evident: that error(s) are a must in growth and perfection is impossible. Throughout this fall semester in Writing 101, I have grown as a more confident writer. I have learned to overcome the fear and hindrance of inadequately transcribing my true thoughts to paper- selfishly working to please the reader and not my idea(s). Sharing my perspective, without fixed add-ins, is what makes me unique as a writer. I feel this can lead to constructive debates and can act as a learning tool for uninformed readers, but if the writing tampers the room for debate and learning is lessened. Whether writing is your strong point or your weakness, it all depends on your creativity and how you choose to utilize it. Having strong writing skills is very helpful no matter what occupation you are a part of. The problem for most people is that they do not spend enough time practicing their writing skills because most people think that it is not important and not essential to their profession. Unfortunately they do not realize that until they are given a task at their job that requires strong or moderate writing skills and needs to be done accordingly. This is why now days, it is easy to find people going back to school and going through the whole process of becoming a student in the first place.
By writing multiple memos and assignments this semester, I was able to grow accustomed to the strengths and weaknesses of my writing. Some of these I realized on my own but others were realized through the comments of others. Strengths One of my strong writing skills is my ability to complete all parts of the assignment. To ensure that I have not missed any requirements, I create an outline for all of my assignments.
In my time at CCBC, I have had several instructors that I have either passionately liked or disliked. Some were a joy to work with, having a clear passion in their area of study and instructing with a contagious fervor; others had “by-the-book” grading policies, and would give me zero points for answers I would support with recent scientific journals from respectable sources if the aged and inaccurate book assigned to the class disagreed. While I may learn the most about a given topic from an enjoyable, energetic instructor, I learned a great deal about myself and the way I wish to interact with people from a teacher that I often couldn’t decide if I adored or despised.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
Writing papers is a thing I’ve done since the sixth grade, so you would think that by now I would be pretty good at it, well unfortunately I am not. There is so much to be learned while writing papers and being in the eleventh grade we have only touched a small part of the entire subject. The things I have learned in the past few years can be brought into our current classroom to not only help myself, but my classmates as well. Though I may not be good at writing papers, I will always try my best, especially when it comes to helping other people. There are a few notable things that I can bring to the table when it comes to paper writing, I find myself to be an adequate speller, as well as my exceptional peer review skills.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
