Writing papers is a thing I’ve done since the sixth grade, so you would think that by now I would be pretty good at it, well unfortunately I am not. There is so much to be learned while writing papers and being in the eleventh grade we have only touched a small part of the entire subject. The things I have learned in the past few years can be brought into our current classroom to not only help myself, but my classmates as well. Though I may not be good at writing papers, I will always try my best, especially when it comes to helping other people. There are a few notable things that I can bring to the table when it comes to paper writing, I find myself to be an adequate speller, as well as my exceptional peer review skills. While those are my …show more content…
The world is a lot more technological then it was, so spelling isn’t necessarily a required skill in today’s society. We have machines that do the work for us, but there is a small percentage of people, like myself, that grew up being taught that spelling is an important skill. I get questions all the time about how to spell certain words, and most of the time I am able to spell that word and help the person out. Sometimes I’ll even offer a better synonym, although my vocabulary is below average. Spelling ties into peer reviewing. Checking a paper for spelling, grammar, and general mistakes can be very beneficial to another person. As I have learned recently, papers are just as much for the author as they are for the other person. According to multiple studies, a general consensus about peer reviewing has been made, that being “Peer review has long been used in writing courses as a learning tool that benefits both the reviewer and the reviewee”(Klucevsek 106). Peer reviewing is such an important part of writing papers, which means that what I have to bring to the table is vital to the success of the class. Peer reviewing applies to subject six in the advanced composition course competencies within the syllabus. The individuals in the class who lack the skills or fail to comply with the competency, can ask me for help. That is what I can bring to the
In the article of Daniel Richards, the author mentions about in-class peer review. Daniel shows the readers about two types of students who were facing the in-class peer review. One student acts very nervous and he is scared about being shamed if he read his draft in front of his classmates. Other student acts like very confident about his writing and be ready to show his classmates how good he is in writing. In-class peer review exists some social factor about feeling. It may get hurts, the emotion of your classmates and your teacher, feeling shamed when your classmates rate your draft bad. However, the feedback from your peers will motivate your writing somehow. You will know which your weak side and strong side are, then you use it in order
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
Being able to write an exceptionally good paper is important to me in keeping my “A” for English class. There are so many resources available that can help in identifying and improving our weakest skill areas so we can write a properly structured paper. I was able to find many helpful resources that have helped to improve my skill areas in achieving unity in a paper, improving grammatical errors and expanding my vocabulary, and writing a rhetorical analysis,. Many of my resources come from the internet and some came from our textbook, “The Little Seagull.” These resources have been very beneficial to me and have helped me to better understand the mechanics of a well written paper.
My journey through high school as a writer has been quite fruitful. I have refined many of weaknesses, including organizations and introductions, and am still perfectly some as I go, like time management and conclusions. I learned that there is no such thing as a perfect paper; there is always room for improvement in my writing skills. Also, I have learned to see my writing through different perspectives and portray abstract concepts in my work. In the years to come, I hope to learn even more from my instructors and develop a unique writing
...e they can master another part. J.R. still hasn't mastered some of the basic parts of spelling like identifying digraphs and blends; therefore she is having trouble when it comes to saying complex sight words and when it comes to actually spelling words. It is important for teachers to make sure that the students understand the basics before they move on to the more complex aspects. In order for J.R. to succeed in the future, she has to go back and learn the basics. The time where students are learning to read and write is one of the many crucial times in their educational career.
LD’s performance indicated that spelling was a far from automatic process. The type and frequency of LD’s spelling errors are consistent with an SpLD, dyslexia. LD’s lack of knowledge of spelling conventions suggests that there is an underlying difficulty with a weakness in visual memory which will make spelling skills much more difficult to master.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
Humanity has inherited a trait that exhibits self-ambition and a bigoted personality. Thus, explaining why it is very difficult to express and receive criticism from our loved ones, peers, and colleagues. The human nature is about knowing it all and always having the upper-hand at any given circumstances or arguments. A peer review on an essay is an example of how challenging providing constructive criticism can be on someone else’s form of writing. Criticizing the way an individual has executed a form of writing can be challenging yet a learning experience.
Writing has been my most challenging requirement through school. I am not a very experienced writer. I was not required to write much in high school until my last semester. My last semester in high school, about a year and half ago, I took GENR-091 which is the last time I have written a paper longer than one page. That was my most recent writing class; I am rusty to say the least.
It takes an extreme amount of focus and determination for people to write a paper, especially me. As my time in ENC 101 comes to an end this semester, my writing skills have improved dramatically. Everything that I learned was to better myself for my upcoming courses in ENC. Most professors will be expecting their students to know how to write what the may consider being the “perfect paper”. With the number of reading assignments that I have completed this semester, I believe that I will be ready.
If you can say the word you should be able to spell it too. However, many cannot seem to even take the time to learn how to spell a simple word that they should have been able to spell in the third grade. If you do not know how to spell the word sound it out or look it up. It is not that hard to do.
Hello everyone, I understand the concern over peer reviews. My advice is to be the best reviewer of your peers that you can be. Interestingly enough when I last took the class, one of the reviews changed my whole attitude towards something I was writing. It certainly made me a better writer, if not a better person.
A College has a large number of learning skills that can be used for success of each student. As an A student, I am familiar with using A’s educational resources. A few of the resources are extremely handy and adaptable in the application that a student needs. One of the resource tools that I have found most beneficial in my learning process is the A Center for Writing Excellence (CWE). The Center for Writing Excellence offers a plagiarism and grammar checker. Here, I can submit my writing materials to have them checked for plagiarism and grammar errors. I also used the grammar guide frequently. I believe that one of my biggest faults in writing is grammatical errors. The Center for Writing Excellence also offers example papers, essay development, tutorials guides and writing manuals. There are also other resources such as, Axcess Course Materials, Course Syllabus, Student Workshops, and Visual and Audio Tutorials. These tools can be found at ecampus for A College.
