Hello everyone,
I understand the concern over peer reviews. My advice is to be the best reviewer of your peers that you can be. Interestingly enough when I last took the class, one of the reviews changed my whole attitude towards something I was writing. It certainly made me a better writer, if not a better person.
On the other hand you have to remember, there are a lot of people taking this course. A wide variety of people, from English as a 2nd language, to possible authors of books, and all of us in between. If you are able to glean a bit of information and trans-formative knowledge from your peers input on your writing, it is a great thing. If you get bad reviews you have to remember the pool of peers you're in.
I think the one thing all of us as any form of writer want is to be

If you want more feedback after the assignment has been reviewed, or if you didn't get to turn your assignment in. Please feel free to start a thread. Put your assignment on the discussion forums, there are those here that would probably be delighted to help you.
Thank you all for being in this class. I have learned so much from you as my peers.

Anon, If you want to post your sentences on the forum. I suggest using your name when you do. Maybe we can help you more? I don't know but it's worth a try. I'm sorry your reviews didn't live up to your expectations.
Thanks.
Anon,
There are over 26,000 students in this class. Who reviewed your sentences was down to the computer. You can't control the way they responded, you can write your complaints here which you have done, and maybe they will read it.
What you do have is complete control over is yourself, and how you graded your peers. MOOC's are a wonderful new opportunity for some of us. I know they don't have all the elements that a classroom might have. Classrooms also don't have all the qualities they
In the article of Daniel Richards, the author mentions about in-class peer review. Daniel shows the readers about two types of students who were facing the in-class peer review. One student acts very nervous and he is scared about being shamed if he read his draft in front of his classmates. Other student acts like very confident about his writing and be ready to show his classmates how good he is in writing. In-class peer review exists some social factor about feeling. It may get hurts, the emotion of your classmates and your teacher, feeling shamed when your classmates rate your draft bad. However, the feedback from your peers will motivate your writing somehow. You will know which your weak side and strong side are, then you use it in order
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
I strongly agree with Mr. King that the desire to write always being with a love of reading. In Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, he reiterates how important reading is to a writer. One cannot exist without the other—their unbreakable relationship is what makes lots of reading so vital to become a great writer. The pure act of reading teaches lessons impossible to learn without actually doing it. “Every book you pick up has its own lesson”, but this lesson cannot be taught unless the book is actually read (King 145). If one has a desire to read, and loves feeling like they are in a world of their own, the next logical wish is to want others to feel how they feel. Writers are born out of avid readers, which is a nice
After taking this course, this has been a struggling journey. I did not find fun in this class due to the grade I have now as a result. My writing skills did not improve from high school, losing confidence in myself to create well-written, interesting papers. However, this class has given me ideas about new styles of writing. Having done these papers helped me to discern the qualifications to write a rhetorical analysis essay from a visual critique paper. Here is how my experience in College Writing went.
The first English course I took in college was a basic introduction to writing, during this course we learned how to write a good essay, we learned techniques to improve our writing and we learned how to organize our ideas and put them in a logical manner. We did a lot of discussions and during this class was the first time that I was involve in peer reviewing. My second course I took was with the same professor, Mr. Braun. I believe he was a great educator and he really showed interest in helping their students that’s why when I had the opportunity I choose him to be my professor
In final analysis, my writing has greatly improved during this semester, and having looked at the area's I most need to work on has given me an awareness of what my weaknesses are. Examining what I have learned and what I need to learn allows me to generate a strategy to fortify my writing skills. Critiquing my own work has given me insight into how my writing is progressing in this class and allowed me to see short comings I had missed previously. Self-evaluation is a helpful tool for anyone who wants to continue to learn what areas they can improve upon and how much progress they are making. I believe those who appraise their own work will have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses then those who do not evaluate themselves.
Corrected any mistakes highlighted. Finished coursework.
The final grade I assigned as the instructor considered the information documented on the peer review worksheets. Teaching strategies for peer critiques was one of the most rewarding highlights during the academic school year. I watched students evolve from being judgmental and using harsh terminology towards each other’s work to learning the process of becoming art critics. The 35 students evaluated, interpreted, and formed meaningful conclusions about the art work based on their opinions and criteria. However, the F/2 competency to promote a positive learning environment that values and fosters respect for all students took a considerable amount of time, coaching, and preparation
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
I was very attentive when doing peer review because the information being handed to me was valuable, I able to learn what was wrong with my paper without having credit taken off because it was wrong. Peer review helped me learn a lot about my writing not only in the class
Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
Checking a paper for spelling, grammar, and general mistakes can be very beneficial to another person. As I have learned recently, papers are just as much for the author as they are for the other person. According to multiple studies, a general consensus about peer reviewing has been made, that being “Peer review has long been used in writing courses as a learning tool that benefits both the reviewer and the reviewee”(Klucevsek 106). Peer reviewing is such an important part of writing papers, which means that what I have to bring to the table is vital to the success of the class. Peer reviewing applies to subject six in the advanced composition course competencies within the syllabus.
When it comes to evaluations in education, usually the teacher evaluates the student. Although in certain college level courses, the weight is shifted to the students, allowing them to have the power to evaluate their own professors, possibly affecting their careers. It seems odd enough that a student should grade their teacher, but even stranger is that technically students have the ability to control their teachers’ positions, only by filling out a single form. Of course the forms may have excellent remarks from the students, but usually when students are given the chance to anonymously share their opinion, this does not always occur. In these situations, the teachers are put on the spot, being evaluated by their very own students, leading to various negatives which exemplify that student evaluations of teachers should not be a major consideration in the rehiring or promotion of a teacher.
