As I reflect on this semester, I can see a significant change in my writing habits. These changes have not only improved my writing in English 1010, but also my other classes. It did take some experimenting with my writing before I found what worked best for me.
Before I began the semester, writing papers were not my strong suit. I really did not enjoy writing because I believed it to be a difficult process. More specifically beginning a paper was extremely difficult for me. It was tough to start a paper and put my ideas in an orderly fashion to compose a decent paper. While practicing with writing techniques, I found that listing my thoughts helped me. Prewriting gave me the chance to gather all of my ideas and begin my papers quicker. I

never saw it to be very beneficial in my past writing assignments, but now it is one of he vital components to the success of every paper I write. Another beneficial practice is asking for and receiving feedback on my work.
I did not want others to read my papers because I felt that they would not understand my idea and would not know how to give feedback on it. Being placed in small groups during the semester helped with this. Working in those groups were very beneficial and productive. We were able to share different viewpoints on issues and give ideas to each other. The feedback from my peers really did help in making my paper better because, sometimes, what I may fall weak in, it could be their strong area. Now, even if it is just a single paragraph, I always ask a friend or peer to look over my work and ask for their input on its development.
Lastly, I began doing more drafts of my papers before getting to my final piece. Normally I would only do multiple drafts if it was required by the professor, but now I understand how important it is to draft papers before finishing them. Drafting gives me the chance to put my ideas into complete, organized thoughts that allows a reader to understand what message I am trying to portray. It also gives me the opportunity to edit and revise any errors I may have missed in the previous draft. By the end, I would have a pretty good final
product. In all I have learned a lot about my writing and myself as a writer. I know that it is okay to step out of my comfort zone and ask for and receive constructive criticism. Getting feedback from peers is very beneficial because they may be helpful in an area I lack in. Prewriting and drafting my thoughts are vital parts of having a successful paper. Just because I personally do not enjoy writing does not mean I should not challenge myself to become a better writer. There are still a lot of things I can improve in relation with my writing and I plan on doing so starting with the techniques I have learned this semester.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
As a strong math, science and engineering student, writing has not come easy to me and by taking this class, I was hoping to become a stronger writer. Throughout the semester, organizing ideas in logical ways has become straight forward thanks to the peer discussions and review I have had. Before this class, I struggled to transition between ideas and discuss each idea in a logical sequence and, unfortunately, my language arts and history grades suffered as a result. By exuding effort and receiving guidance, my hope was to improve my writing and prepare myself for the college writing which would be
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
From my first day of classes essay, one would be able to see a difference in my writing style. The overall town of my first writing prompt was very bland and was as if I was a typical high schooler writing a prompt. Today, I can see much improvement on my writing capabilities, and how I conduct a writing prompt. My vocabulary choices have been elevated significantly since the start of the semester. I also feel that I am no longer timed when it comes to a writing assignment.
I, for one, it was quite a stressful experience before this course. Starting the paper was one of the main challenging elements of the writing process which I was faced with most of the time. For many unproductive hours, I would simply stare blankly at my writing computer screen while blank thoughts ran through my mind. Nevertheless, among many techniques that I erudite, free-writing is one of the most important step of writing, and had proven to be effective on my writing process. With my problem of not being able to generate ideas to put down on the paper, free-writing has helped me a tremendously. Proper free-writing helps a writer in ways beyond his or her imagination. For instance, when you free-write, your brain generates ideas that even a writer himself or herself might find hard to engender or grasp. Since the writer is not restricted when free-writing, your imagination is your limitation; you reserve the right to literally write about any number of themes which comes to mind. From these themes which you generate, you can then select what you feel fits best your argument. This is the advantage that I have come to realize in free-writing. Through this course, I have come to learn that everything requires just enough preparation in order for someone to tackle a particular task. Free-writing my papers at first, has made me more aware of my progress throughout the entire time of writing and certain aspects of my paper that I can improve on. Additionally, Free-writing has helped me realize that your paper can always improve; there are always new ideas firing in your mind. With free-writing you are able to capture these ideas on paper as they come to mind time after time. For future writings I will continue to work on my time allocation. Allocating your time properly is a crucial step in the process of writing. This allows to have ample time to complete all the sections in your writing. I
My pre-writing techniques are brainstorming,free-writing,discussing,charting,mapping, my ideas so their well organized. Writing is very important because the method that we are using to get you through the writing techniques my strategy can relate to this week’s reading critical reading and thinking can be very helpful to me also critical reading helps to gather my thoughts together advantages of free-writing is useful when you simply have no idea what to write about it will help you find a topic to be free association. The disadvantages of free writing can be tiring when you feel free to list or cluster ideas to save time . to improve my pre-writing techniques i should be able to learn everything with prewriting to use those
As a very nervous first year student at Westfield State, I went into English 101 lacking confidence in my writing. I Knew I would have struggles and there would be bumps in the road with my writing but I am very eager to learn and become the best writer I can be to help my academic success and become a higher level thinker, what I took from English 101 one was expressing my voice was very key and sentence structure can give your essay a much better feel, knowing what I do know about research aspect of writing is second to none, but I’m not trying to profess just what I have improved, my thesis statements are very weak and I lack organization skills but with the want to become a better writer and trusting the writing process journey I’m on I now I will conquer these task.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
On another hand, before this semester, I had not found a way to use prewriting to my advantage. This course taught me a new method of prewriting that came in very useful. I noticed that, over the course of these past few months, I began using my prewriting more and more while composing my essays. I learned a method of prewriting that breaks my essay into questions or goals. By compiling the information I need to answer those questions and achieve those goals alongside each other, I effectively create a guide for myself. The information that I pair with the questions is not necessarily detailed. I learned to simply give myself an idea of the content I wish to put there, giving myself the ability to be flexible. This method also works well with my own style of writing. Using this method of prewriting allows me to keep a certain kind of flow to my writing. Instead of having a specific and strict structure to my paragraphs, I convey my message and make it all seem like one cohesive piece. I notice that when I have very
