On Friday, October 30, 2015, approximately 10:40 am Kenneth Cathcart and Imontra Davis were engaged in a verbal altercation in the gym. As a result of this altercation Kenneth Cathcart punched Imontra Davis in the nose. The boys were quickly separated by the coaches and Kenneth Cathcart was escorted to SRO Richardson who standing in the court yard. Imontra Davis received a small cut on his nose as a result of the punch. SRO Richardson then escorted Kenneth Cathcart to his office for processing. He then charged Kenneth Cathcart with Simple Assault. Parent was called and informed that their child was arrested by CMPD and given a 10 day suspension by school.

A time that I did something that I thought I couldn't do, was to stick up for others. When I was in sixth grade, during recess, I saw a girl named Melissa crying. I went up to her and asked what was wrong. She said that people were talking about her behind her back, and that she felt awkward around them. I consoled her by letting her know that friends don't talk behind friends backs and that you have other people that you can talk to during recess. It bothered me how Melissa was sad. In her Huffington Post blog article titled Here’s One Way to Wreck a Child’s Education: Take Away Recess, Haley Krischer takes an emboldened stand against the practice of eliminating recess; which is often done as a punishment or to make more time for instructional learning. I stand in agreement with Krischer. I do not agree with schools taking away recess for any reason with the exception of dangerous weather or environmental circumstances. Yet, research indicates how common the 86-ing of recess is occurring in schools. A study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2010) revealed 77% of school Principals reported taking away recess as a punishment, and 81.5% of schools allow students to be excluded from recess. Krischer begins the article by introducing her 9 year old son and his affinity for recess: “the only subject he will talk about”. She gives examples of how recess benefits her son such as other students who help him troubleshoot technology issues and challenging him to improve his sports skills. Indeed, the unstructured playtime allows children to explore their environment and develop new ideas and understandings of it and those within it (American Pediatric Association, 2013). Kischer also expressed that children need active play to combat restlessness and that this is especially important for children who may suffer from ADHD, noting that taking away recess as a punishment for misbehavior may be counterproductive and result in increased behavioral problems. A longitudinal study that followed over 10,000 students between the ages of 8 and 9 concluded that student recess of at least 15 minutes resulted in better behavior as rated by teachers (Samuels, 2009).

When I think of abnormal behavior, the first thing that comes to mind is one of my aunt’s. She committed suicide when I very young, so early 1970’s. As I got older, inevitably stories of her would arise during holiday get togethers. She was married with three children and in her early thirties, residing in Florida, when she walked out and away from her husband and small children. For over a year, no one knew what happened to her, she made no effort to contact anyone. Eventually, the Salvation Army somewhere in Michigan called my grandmother and they sent her home on a bus. She never returned to her husband or children. The doctors diagnosed her as a paranoid schizophrenic. My mother told me that when she was on her medication she was fine, but once she felt “fine”, she would stop her medication. When the medication left her system, she became anxious and afraid. She once chased my grandmother, who was in her late sixties down the driveway with an ax, because she thought her mother was trying to kill her. After several inpatient stays in mental hospitals, she came back home again and she was doing good. She left my grandmother’s one night while everyone was sleeping, made it approximately fifteen miles away to a lake.
This particular class period consisted of around 3 students, but one student was working particularly just by himself with his teachers aid. Even before it started Ms.Metcalf classroom energy felt a bit off, and come to find out that during lunch one of the students had been teasing the other student. The student that had also been causing trouble had out of nowhere stolen paper clips off of Ms.Metcalf. The other student was not able to stay on task, because he still felt upset from the incident that occurred during lunch. This soon became more of a discipline class rather than the student learning about math, and apparently the "bully" had created pointer with the paper clips that could have actually hurt someone. Soon after Ms. Metcalf had to call the assistant principles to step in to discipline the student, and lost a entire day of instructions due to one student misbehavior. After the misbehaving student had left she went over to the emotional distraught student and began discussing that he should never let people 's words if they weren 't nice and that entire lesson became a lesson on
... once I entered the locations to start my observations, I was surprised they were all pretty busy. Though the observations seemed easy, in reality, they were more difficult to conduct. This is because there were a lot of people consuming alcohol, which often made it difficult to constantly remain in visual contact.
Teachers not only must be wary of being inadvertently injured by enraged “students” fighting in the hallway or the cafeteria, a peer might even wind-up becoming a threat to one’s physical safety. I recall one particular eighth grade Washington trip. As usual, I was chaperoning one hundred twenty eighth graders on the Hammonton Middle School’s annual class DC trip. We had just arrived back at the Mt. Vernon Motel after visiting the Jefferson Memorial. The nine chaperones were fatigued, but the “students” were still rambunctious.
I walked very nervously down to the office, wondering why I was being called down, for what reason? I slowly entered like a snail into the main office, where i was greeted by the receptionist behind the desk. She said in a nasally voice, “ The vice principal would like to see you in his office.” I responded with an “ Okay.” I walked back to the Vice Principal’s office, i opened the door and saw the Vice Principal and a teacher aid sitting behind the wooden desk. “ Take a seat Scott, we would like to talk to you about the incident in the hall way yesterday after school, about the two girls who got in a fight.” Said the Vice Principal in a stern tone. He went on to show me the video recording from one of the school’s many monitoring video cameras. It showed not only the fight, and the wild spectators, but also me rolling around on the floor with my phone out, recording the fight and sending it on Snapchat for the world to see. I wasn’t aware though of the law that prohibits video taping of people that could damage their reputation, I was filled in on this by the Vice Principal and the teacher aid sitting beside him to his right. For this reason, I was given two days in-school suspension, plus a not so joyful reaction from my Father upon hearing of my punishment handed down by the school. I spent the next two days in in-school, as i mentioned earlier, being brought down my work from my classes, having sheer boredom rush over my body when i was finished and all I could do was stare at the paint chipped wall. This goes t show that Cell Phones might be true gems of our generation, but we shouldn’t use them like knuckleheads, because then you might up in the same position i was in, or maybe even worse. So keep the phones in your pockets when you see trouble, because trouble will then find you as
