Learning is going beyond retaining and recalling information. One must do several things to ensure that he or she is being an effective learner, to ensure that the student is learning at their full potential. Students must learn to read, write, and think critically. Reading critical is more than just reading a book. Students must ask them self, “What do I know what will be the message, and what will I learn? The student should be able to read between the lines and discover inferences. In order to write critically one must have a good understanding of the subject matter. In addition, they must convey their responses in a clear and concise manner. In this way they will leave little doubt in the reader’s mind as to where they stand. In addition, the student should take notes on what he or she is reading. if there are any. With a sequence score of 27 I prefer organization and a clear goal set before beginning a task. My precision came in at a score of 27 as well. This is indicative of people who read books, and who do not like to be wrong when passing information for either professional or personal use. Technical reasoning came in at 25. This reflects my pleasure in using tools and fixing things. This as sequence and precision is a, “Use first pattern. Finally, is confluence this came in at 22. This reflects a, “Use as needed pattern.” I am not the type of person to come up with a brilliant idea on the spot. In addition, I do not like taking risks. However; I use this pattern whenever it is needed. None of my patterns fell in the, “avoid first” category. Therefore, I use all three of these patterns at one time or another. Plutarch deduces, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” A vessel is often cluttered with useless items while a fire kindles and is truly fascinating as it slowly starts to grow. The mind is always being filled with unnecessary information every single day. The student has the opportunity to mold the mind into storing information that is considered useful. In the academic sense, students should be able to use this information and apply it when they are learning. Students should strive to learn for the purpose of expanding the mind. Every single thing taught in school should be applied in life. That is the only way that anyone can become successful.

In writing, pure originality is impossible. The novel, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, compares writing to setting up a camp. The ground has already been camped on, yet camp is set up in that spot again. The camps in the same spot will have structural similarities, but still be different enough. The same idea applies to writing. Even writers like James Joyce, who sometimes coin their own words use the same words as everyone else, and it is only so often those words can be combined in a way that is completely unique (Foster, 195). For example, using conflict to develop theme is found in most works of literature. These works feature similar conflicts and themes allowing the same story to be told in slightly different styles. Authors often utilize the conflict or resolution of the conflict to exemplify the theme. Furthermore, the short stories, “Araby” and “The Boarding House”, by James Joyce exemplify the use of conflict to develop theme.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
When trying to define critical thinking you might run into some challenges along the way. Critical thinking is a widely used yet vague term that is practiced by different people in a variety of locations throughout the world. Critical thinking is a strong virtue for the majority and the worst enemy for others. Needless to say without critical thinking we would be nowhere close to where we are today pertaining to our technological and social endeavors.
Introduction In the beginning of his book, Thomas Foster discusses the differences in the way that a student would read literature in comparison to an English teacher. Memory, symbol, and pattern are 3 elements that separate professorial reading from that of the pupil. By memory, Foster means the thoughts that come to mind (such as movies and previous books that the reader has read) while reading a piece of literature. Memory is what allows a reader to make connections between the text that is being read and the reader’s prior knowledge.
Sequence: The Sequence Pattern is essential to me, especially at work. I definitely agree with the LCI assessment that states I use this pattern first. When I started my most current position with Amazon Customer Service I was nervous, but my nerves easily let up due to a great Training format. The company provided us with a operation and system manual 's that were organized with step-by-step instructions and we also participated in Live training. The company even had a buddy system that encouraged us to sit with Senior Representatives and review how they interacted with the customers via Live Chat, Email and Telephone. This allowed me to know in advance what the company was expecting from me. It was so helpful for me to see this different examples. I believe this is why I have become one of the Top CSR 's on the floor.
Teaching in the read/write learning style is improves the learning experience for others especially for this specific learning style. The read/write learning style is a very common and useful form of learning that is taught in an educational platform because of the nature of the learning style. Therefore, knowing how to tailor one’s lectures to meet the needs of the students with the read/write learning style is a refreshing and revitalizing method in providing the information to those who are in a position to learn and encourages the information taught to remain intact and new in their brain. Furthermore, being aware of one’s learning style allows the individual to receive the information to be understood competently. Awareness of your individual learning style can provide it’s advantages along with its disadvantages. The advantages of this awareness are that the individual knows how to receive the information in a way that is best suited for their abilities. This can allow the individual to be more in sync with what methods and tools are necessary to enhance the learning experience. Then, the disadvantage of being aware of the one’s learning style exists when the individual is consumed with the mentality that the only way to adequately learn new material is through their specific learning
In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. What will most people be reading in a generation? The distractions every day people face in today 's society are affecting current levels of literacy. The direction we need to be pushed towards will be the top priority of the 21st-century educators. In her essay "Read with Purpose" by Cheryl Barnett-Bey, she proposes that the enjoyment of reading has been replaced by the Internet and television. Just before my teenage years I was introduced to new technology and became less interested in reading books. Throughout my own literacy journey I 've noticed our fast-paced society is slowly turning more and more people into being interested in activities than reading.
In his essay Critical Thinking: What Is It Good For? (In Fact, What Is It), Howard Gabennesch explains the importance of critical thinking by drawing attention to how its absence is responsible for societies many ills including, but not limited to, the calamity in Vietnam. Yet, at the end of his essay, Gabennesch also mentions that, despite “the societal benefits of critical thinking, at the individual level, uncritical thinking offers social and psychological rewards of its own.”(14). Similarly, it is these rewards that, like the bait on a fishhook, often make individuals hesitant to engage in critical thinking despite the resulting harm to both them and society.

We couldn't write great essay if we have difficulty in spelling words correctly. Rote learning may not be the perfect way to educate our children, but same goes to meaningful learning. There is no perfection in this world. Everything has it’s own flaws. ‘I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business.’ quote by Michael J. Fox. Owen Feltham also mentioned that perfection is immutable, but for things that are imperfect, change is the way to perfect them. So, rote memorizing should never be substituted. It should be used alongside understanding learning, which both balance up and compliment each other to create a better and effective learning style.
Critical Reading and Writing in the Discipline (FOUN1019) is a yearlong course designed to improve and develop students’ cognitive, analytical and rhetorical skills. It thereby provides students with the requisite skills to truly join the scholarly arena and become academic writers. I enrolled in the FOUN1019 course with the assumption that I would become more proficient in English Language and a more eloquent communicator.
