STEM Education Reflection In the first chapter of STEM Lesson Essentials, it asks you to write down your own definition of STEM education. Here’s what I wrote: STEM education is interdisciplinary lessons engaging the students in real life scenarios through hands on activities and explorations. Although I had not yet been properly given the direct definition till further in the chapter on page four. I was surprised to find that I was not that far off from what was given as the “real” definition. It states that some of us may have even been a STEM teacher at some point in their teaching career with out even knowing it. Looking back on my teaching, I believe this to be true for most of us at some point. One of my favorite quotes from Stacey Green states, that if we don’t make learning relevant to our students, then they just learn the answer from the test and forget when it is done. I myself was guilty of the common misconception of what technology refers to. I too, believed that technology only refers to devices with a plug. It wasn’t till recently after class and after reading Chapter 2 in STEM Lesson Essentials that I realized that technology expresses a profound multitude of products, processes and systems. While the students evolve and become STEM literate they need to be able to comprehend and determine technologies and their use in the world, and then reach out and fix or find away to make it even better then it already is. In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
As a teacher, I have numerous personal goals. Mainly, my goal is to provide students with the opportunity and encouragement to succeed in life and to develop as free-thinking individuals in society. I consider myself a progressive and an essentialist, according to theory. I feel that students need to be given multiple opportunities to explore many different life skills that sometimes are overlooked in the education system. Testing, rote memorization, and lecture, in my opinion, do not promote students' own inquiry and does not give students opportunities to tap into their own source of knowledge that they each bring with them to the classroom. She worked at Kimberly-Clark for twenty-two years. She gradually became the president of the global nonwoven fabrics business. In 2006, Walmart invited her to head stores in Georgia. Brewer benefited the business by raising their profits and eventually became president of Walmart’s United States East business unit. She was responsible for more than one hundred billion dollars in revenue (Daniels). She is now one of the nine executives who report directly to Walmart’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael T. Duke. In 2012, Brewer was named one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” by Forbes magazine, which is a highly respectable title. Brewer does not ignore her STEM background. She credits her chemistry degree with sharpening her analytical skills and helping her to stand out in the business world. Individuals entering the workforce can expect to move throughout various job and career fields over their lifetime. Knowing how to learn and think critically is becoming more important than learning a particular occupation, or vocational training. A lot of times information is learned and just forgotten because the learner had no use or desire to keep the information, but if the learner needs the information and thinks about it every day then there is a higher probability that the learner will have actually memorized it.

This class has opened my mind to the incredible impact that STEM Education can have on our society. I do not work in an institution that has a STEM program. I work at a preschool; this makes my practice of any type of STEM program extremely limited. However, it is a private school. All my students come from households where one or both of their parents are professionals. These professionals want their children to be academically prepared for school. This means we must academically, mentally, and emotionally prepare them for their future schooling. I teach my students how to be a functioning participant in a classroom while exploring mathematics, science, art, history, literature and pre-writing. We couldn't write great essay if we have difficulty in spelling words correctly. Rote learning may not be the perfect way to educate our children, but same goes to meaningful learning. Owen Feltham also mentioned that perfection is immutable, but for things that are imperfect, change is the way to perfect them. So, rote memorizing should never be substituted. It should be used alongside understanding learning, which both balance up and compliment each other to create a better and effective learning style.
Technology affects every aspect of our lives. From romance to business, it has shown its presence everywhere. But technology has had a huge impact on education that cannot be denied, and has done nothing but improve the quality and quantity of education.
When I first enrolled in Technology and Society, I honestly did not know what to think of this class. I thought I was going to feel awkward because maybe it was going be a class full of nerds, which there wasn’t, and all we would talk about was different kinds of inventions and how they effected society. After completing the course it was pretty much true, the class discussed many inventions and how they have effected society throughout the years, even how society has effected technology. One of the main topics that was covered in the class was how many different definitions there was of what was considered technology. The biggest lesson that was taught was how technology and society have been linked so closely throughout history, and now today you cannot have one without the other.
