The Goal
For my personal project I decided to explore the concept of sewing. At first my goal was to be able to sew and design a wedding dress, but then I changed my topic after realizing how foolish it was and how hard it would be because I didn't know how to sew clothing , so I changed my topic to sewing a quilt. I chose this goal because I love to sew and I wanted to expand my horizons in that skill and to be able to do something with it than just fixing holes in clothing. I set out to accomplish learning a new skill and applying it to create something that would be useful and perhaps even help me in finding a skill that I enjoy and would like to continue with in the future. I decided that since I was learning a new skill that I would choose approach to learning as my AoI because learning a new skill can teach you many different things such as patience, persistence, and even precision. This process let me learn along the way what works and what doesn’t work, each new mistake may have put me back a step but it also helped me in my quest to find out how quilting works and the steps and hardships that each step of the process creates and lets me work through the problems, small and large alike, thus working on my problem solving skill which will come in handy in the future. My initial inquiry question was “how does culture define design?” although I did change it to “How does learning a new skill affect ones patience and persistence?” because the culture portion did not really apply to my research or project. , I changed it because quilting takes a lot of patience and persistence . I chose this inquiry question because learning a new skill can cause you to gain new personality traits such as patience due to the fact that...

You have to get the seams and tension just right or you have to go back through and un-sew and re-sew over and over again. I had made the mistake of having my seams too large and not straight as well as having my tension wrong on my machine and I have had to un-sew and re-sew my fabric more times than just getting it correct the first time, but, if I wanted to complete my quilt I would have to just keep moving on, to persist. I can conclude that learning a new skill such as learning how to sew a quilt, does affect your patience and persistence by causing you to be patient and slow when cutting and causing you to go back through and look at the work that has already been done and if it is not done right then to try and try again.
