The purpose of the health assessment is to look at the patient overall aspect of their health. By recording the patient’s history (past, family, social, and environment), review of systems, nutritional and psychological data, this can help identify any health problems and ways to treat and prevent the problem. I had the opportunity to interview a close friend of mine with his permission. During the interview, not only was I able to learn more about my patient, but, I also notice the communication techniques that I use which are empathy, facial expression, and asking relevant question. “Empathy is the ability to understand and accept another person’s reality, accurately perceive feelings… (Potter, 2013).” When my patient stated that both of his grandmothers had dementia which in turn means his parents and his self also have a chance of getting dementia; I used empathy by stating “It must be hard to know what might be ahead.” Because I was able to see the situation from the patient view it helped the patient to open up more about his fears. This is a technique that I need to work on as sometimes I am unaware of my facial expression and the person speaking might take it the wrong way. During the assessment, I tried my best to keep my facial expression the same, laughing and smiling at jokes when appropriate. The patient noticed my facial expression as a way of approving of what he was saying and continued speaking without holding back. A way it could inhibit the conversation is when I made an annoyed face because my patient was distracted with his phone because he was getting bored. Reflecting back on the all the information learned this semester, I am amazed at how much I learned. Working in healthcare makes you aware of a lot of the topics that were covered, however, when you apply it to yourself, in a personal relationship, it becomes much more powerful what the impact of each topic is.
Obtaining a thorough health history is an important piece of a patient’s assessment. Failure to obtain a complete health history results in a lack of information that can negatively impact the patient. Interviewing skills develop through experience and practice. A complete health assessment involves several features and is a systematic process that involves respect, professionalism, and communication skills.
Due to the information and instruction we received prior to participating in these patient interviews, there was several positive aspects of my interaction with my assigned patient. First, when moving onto a new question I would often reiterate part of the patient’s previous statement to both show that I was attentively listening and to justify the reason for asking that following question. An example of this was after briefly mentioning his wife, I asked “Speaking of your wife, how does she and the rest of your family support you through your medical treatments?” Positive aspects of my non-verbal communication include maintaining focused eye contact, maintaining a close, but appropriate distance between myself and the patient, and leaning forward with my hands together to express interest and support for the patient when they were talking. I also emulated the patient’s facial expressions as to have appropriate facial expressions when they were talking to me.
Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else’s position and to intuit what that person is feeling (Pink, 2006). Rather than simply sympathizing, empathy enables us to put ourselves into the shoes of another and actually feel what they are feeling. This vicarious sense allows us to better understand people and their experiences. Understanding others and their experiences is vital in education.
