The psychosocial crisis of toddlerhood is Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. Children within the age group of 2 to 4 years old are developing their independence through the exploration of language, play, communication, and functional skills. Each of these tasks fosters independence and autonomy, but they also come with frustration for a child, especially at the beginning stages. Teaching children self-control and anger management will greater assist them to achieve goals in their current stage and then later in life they will develop into strong decision makers.
A child may express anger when not being able to communicate their desires or become upset when socially engaging with another child who will not share a toy. One example of a behavior in toddlerhood is relational aggression. This can be seen when a child is refused involvement or left out by another child (Newman & Newman, 2018). This type of behavior is something that if not handled, no matter seen in a girl or a boy can present itself again later in life.

Childhood is the period of being a child which is from birth up until when the child reaches puberty (adolescence). A myriad people perceive childhood as being fun and joyful but many would disagree and would now begin to consider it as being problematic. This essay will be impartial and promiscuous by discussing supporting arguments that childhood is and is not considered as being in crisis. Part of this essay will be looking at different authors or journalists who believe childhood is in crisis due to many factors such as; children not spending time outdoors, them being allowed to used electronics too much etc. While other authors and journalists will be looking at the opposite side as to children only being innocent or that parents are to blame and the media due to confusion over whether childhood is in crisis.
As a result of the myelination of the limbic system, growth of the prefrontal cortex and a longer attention span, emotional regulation and cognitive maturation develop together, enabling one another to advance (Berger,2014, p.213). This type of development and level of maturation is most noticeable in children ages four and five because uncontrollable outburst of emotion, such as tantrums and phobias begin to disappear; however, I believe it’s possible for children younger than four to achieve this level of maturation and cognitive development much sooner based on external influences such as parents, friends and their environment. For example, not long after my daughter turned she began to speak in small but full sentences to express her needs and emotions. I’ll never forget the first time I told her no when she made a request. Her facial expression immediately changed and she burst into tears. I was completely at a loss for words, being a first time mother, because I could not understand why she had such a dramatic reaction to being told no. Finally, I realized that even though it was very apparent to myself my reason for saying no, she was not able to comprehend the why at this stage in her life. From that day forward I have made it a conscious effort to explain and demonstrate my actions and the reasons for them;
The first two years of a humans life are bursting with biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial development. In the first few weeks after conception to two years after birth a child’s brain experiences more growth than any other organ in the body. During the first two years of a child’s life the brain is very plastic and malleable. In order for children to continue down a path of success and learning there are certain experiences a child must have in order to develop normally. The First Two years of a child life is responsible for the foundation that is layed.
Every single person goes through life experiencing the same obstacles. To simply put it, parents are lacking the proper techniques and skills needed to teach their children how to control their emotions. Children lash out not because their angry or mad but because parents failed to teach them skills to properly express their emotions. Anger and brutality in young children can be stopped but it takes understanding, knowledge, and control.
Isolation is unable to help a child to calm down and regain control over emotions. Only parents’ presence and their comforting support are able to assist a child to build self-discipline and make a child more cooperative and more receptive to the parental guidance. “Kids tend to misbehave when the situation or their feelings tax their capacity to handle things. And when they do try to express these big emotions, they may act out in ways that are aggressive or disrespectful” (Siegel and Bryson “The trouble” 42). The objective of parents is to help the child to overcome the emotions, to assist in understanding of their nature, and to guide to master self-discipline. Often the child’s misbehavior is a call for parental attention and love. By using “time-out” approach, parents limit their ability to influence a child, and to set an example of self-discipline by taking control over the emotions. “Time-out” demonstrates to the child that parents are not able to control their own emotions and give up on teaching a little one how to manage feelings and make better choices. “Studies in neuroplasticity—the brain’s adaptability—have proved that repeated experiences actually change the physical structure of the brain” (Siegel and Bryson “Time-outs”, par. 2).
