Pro Ethnic Studies
The subject that I was interested in my schooling the most was my ethnic studies course. Whether ethnic studies should be implemented into schools or not has been widely debated. I 'm in favor of having ethnic studies in all schools. Ethnic studies courses being put into school systems will be very beneficial in regards to the student, and will promote unity amongst students.
Success rates of students will increase with the implementation of ethnic studies courses in schools. In the movie precious knowledge, the dropout rate for students was 50%. When their ethnic studies course was added the gradation rate of the students enrolled was 93%. In these ethnic studies classes the method of teaching isn 't the normal banking

Having an ethnic studies course that appeals to the student will cause them to do well in not only that class but their other classes as well. The student will learn to use their brains and skills in different ways that will rub off onto their other subjects causing them to do better there also. In precious knowledge the students aren 't doing that well in any classes before the raza program came, but then students started to do very well in not only the ethnic study course but several other subjects too. The teaching method in their classes is a problem posing pedagogy (Freire). A Problem posing type of learning is very interactive and hands on in a sense, and that is what interest students more than just copying notes and writing what they hear. The students have a voice in the classroom and they can safely express themselves and their thoughts with their peers as well as their teacher. The only way the students even unlocked their potential was through the ethnic study course being something that truly interested them. These lessons are important in the classroom for several reasons. First off, we as teachers need to find ways to make sure that students from all ethnic backgrounds are included in classroom discussions and that they have the ability to apply themselves to the material taught in the classroom. However, teachers also need to realize that these practices need to be implemented so that stereotypes among the different cultures do not
The improvement in their education that these Mexican American students with the Raza Studies is very similar to the affect that Afterschool programs had for the students in “Pass or Fail in Cambodia Town”. When students from both films were taught about their culture/ history they did better in school. The main point of “Precious Knowledge” is that students thrive when learning about multicultural education, especially students who are underrepresented by mainstream Eurocentric education. However, due to a history of systemic racism and a general lack of knowledge or understanding, many leaders choose to suppress the voices of underrepresented communities.
It changes from school to school, rather than teaching ethnicities of many different American groups. The goal of teaching American ethnic culture should include a wide range of content. If schools were to teach all ethnicities to every child, no matter their race, it would benefit and prepare students who will be entering an integrated society instead of a desegregated society. The study proposes that the although implicit biases may exist in the DoDEA facilities, the classroom environment fosters a cultural experiential dynamic that allows minorities to flourish academically without bias for racial or ethnic differences in learning outcomes. Furthermore, implementation of diversifying programs like the IRP in a public high school can determine if greater SAT scores can be achieved by minorities who have participated in the program. Elevating the academic performance of SAT’s in minorities can provide lasting educational benefits.
The course, Chicano Studies 50, introduced me to many topics that I never was taught in high school. The differences between high school and college is that in college students are available to many courses and recourses to further develop their knowledge in their culture. Professor Montoya teaches his students in a deeper concept of how Chicanos ideals were developed in comparison to my previous course Chicano Studies 10. The course showed the class brief experiences of farmworker’s struggles and to movements Mexican-Americans decided to accomplish to provided better life for those who were undocumented and for them as well. According to Omi and Winant, the term race can be defined as “a concept which signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies.” From their framework of racial formation and concept of racial projects, Omi and Winant asserts that race is a matter of social structure and cultural representation that has been intertwined to shape the nature of racism. Racism has been seen since the events of early English colonization of the indigenous people and the racialization of African Americans through slavery, all in which the United States is molded upon as a nation. Thus, this social structure of domination has caused European colonials and American revolutionists to create racialized representations, policies, and structures in order to oppress indigenous and black populations in their respective eras.
Race has no biological meaning. There is only one human race; there are no subspecies, no single defining characteristic, traits, or even gene, separates one “race” from another. Instead of being a biological concept, race is a social construct, and a relatively modern one at that. It was created to give light-skinned Europeans an advantage by making the white race superior and all others inferior. Throughout its history, the concept of race has served this purpose well.
For this purpose, I strongly believe our educational system should mandate ethnic studies classes into all high school curriculums prior to graduation.
I believe this is a very relevant topic today since prejudice and discrimination has become the leading issue of violence. The goal of this type of education is to teach the students that they have worth and can learn. It is a very positive subject matter when considering the benefits of implementing this type of education into a school system. This type of education encourages students of a diverse background to have a positive self-identity, pride in their heritage, accept others with diverse backgrounds, and promote social justice against prejudice and discrimination. Teachers can change the conversation in their classrooms by adding spontaneous and relevant content to their curriculum that both promotes multiculturalism and connects with the students. I believe a big part of making a change in our society today is by ‘changing the conversation’ whether that is about discrimination or another important issue. Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students to gain a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably from a judgmental and prejudiced view. Diversity has a broad range of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their cultural and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students not only bring their cultural and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnicity, talents, and skills.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children. There is no question that the education must be prepared to embrace the diversity and to teach an increasingly diverse population of young children.
Also, how other cultures have had a phenomenal impact on how I view everyday situations and how I draw conclusions, whether it’s about an ethnic group, my own and others or about hot topics in the news. Before this class I did not realize cultural relativism. I really was ethnocentric because I never took the time to evaluate other people’s cultures independently of my own. While I think it is normal for people to judge their peers, coworkers, etc. based on their experiences I also feel it would be beneficial for all of us to take the time to try and understand the sociological point of view of others that are not familiar to us or view things very different from us. The tools I have learned in this class seems to have made me a better listener and emphasizer because I have caught myself listening to people just to hear them and not just to respond. So many lessons and skills can be learned from the topic of diversity. Learning about different cultures and diversity can strengthen a child 's sense of self as well as the sense of others.Keeping diversity in class can also educate the children on the differences in the different cultures in the world. This allows them to see different living conditions, taste different foods,and experience different traditions. A final reason to keep diversity in the classroom is in doing so betters the teacher being self-aware of diversity can prevent any bias acts being taken in the class.
