The definition of health generally varies from person to person; for me health is the state of well-being; whether it is physical, mental or social well-being. When making health decisions many people, myself included, consider finances before making decisions. For an example before joining a gym I consider the cost and quality of the gym before considering how vital exercise is to my health. The same goes for diet I often hear people say eating health is much more expensive than eating unhealthy. Being healthy comes from putting in effort; physically, mentally, and economically.

However the eastern culture has a tendency to ignores the aspect of mental health, which may be one of the reasons why a great amount of the population are unaware of the mental health disorders. Deeming mental health illnesses as an unknown aspect of health contributes to the stigma that is evident in societies. By taking community health nursing, and psychological disorders in the same semester, I was able to relate the stigma associated with mental health with social determinants of health such as income, employment, social exclusion, and housing. Social determinants of health are factors that can act as barriers to improving health, or factors that support health. For instance, if an individual is severely depressed and is unable to get out of bed to go to work, the individual will lose his/her job. Upon losing one 's job, the individual may not have a source of income, and may not have the means to have housing and is then evicted. This individual may or may not have the social support to receive assistance in this crisis, which can lead to homelessness or substandard housing. The original definition of health was described as a one dimensional state of being. If a person was void of illness or disease, they were declared healthy. We now understand that health is a multidimensional state of being. It is comprised of three major dimensions: physical, emotional, and social. Physical health speaks to what we eat, our activity levels, taking preventative medications, and whether or not we partake in harmful or risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse. Our emotional health is encompassed by how well we deal with our emotions, our stress levels, and our happiness. College is an exhilarating time, especially for the students at the University of Iowa. Young adults are finally out of the house and given the freedom to do whatever, whenever. They have the option of going to new places and staying out late, all without the need of parental consent. This is the time for discovering new interests, meeting new people, learning, and finding oneself. College may sound like the perfect place, however, not everyone is excited for this change. Many students struggle adapting to this new environment full of choices. Growing up in a foster home and later on being adopted, my past consists of a life that was placed off, what I thought to be its intended course. The derailment granted me with a different perspective on life and also newfound knowledge and respect for social workers and their contributions to society. Individuals whom were in foster care with me and interactions with foster children from my previous employment opportunity at a daycare, influenced me to steer in the direction of becoming a social worker. As I constantly reached new levels of maturity while progressing in life from exposure through real life experiences, these events created a profound knowledge base in relation to social justice. Our society today does not value our mental health like it should. If society would only pay as much attention to mental health, they would be better off in the long run. Think about an athlete playing a sport, they certainly understand how important physical health is. When a baseball player injures his knee, he is out and waits until it heals. But like many people, mental health is overlooked. Most teenagers do not realize that the many things like stress or eating disorders are coming from a poor mental state. They think that if they just ignore it they will snap out of it, this is not true and many times this kind of thinking will only make it worse (Change Your Mind). Mental health is not seen as important as physical health due to misconceptions and stigma behind mental health patients.
