hat Is Health? Health is a word that has many different definitions and many ideas of what it truly means. The World Health Organization defines health as "... a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Philosophy 335: Biomedical Ethics—Study Guide). Just as the World Health Organization has given their idea of what health is defined as so has every person in the world. I define health very similar to the World Health Organization, that it is not just a physical state, but a mental, spiritual and even nutritional state. Health overall, cannot be combined into one category as there are many different avenues of health. Physical health, I believe, is the health of your physical …show more content…
Not only is it the individuals lifestyle that contributes to their overall health, but it is also things such as their environment that they live and the circumstances they live in (World Health Organization). These are called determinants. When discussing environment pertaining to health, we must take into consideration that this also means the social, economic, physical environment. As stated by Levins and Lopez, “Genes may influence how we relate to our environments, while society can determine the environments that we face..” (p. 270) indiciating that it is not only one factor that determines our health, but many. At a York University Conference held in Toronto in 2002, 14 different social determinants of health were using ranging from Aboriginal status to unemployment, to food insecurity (Mikkonen, Raphael, 2010). There are also factors such as income and social factors, education, genetics, social support networks, health services and even gender that are determinants of health. Something we individuals need to remember is that we cannot blame people for having bad health when some of the determining factors are completely out of their control. I feel that a person 's physical environment are one of the most important determinants of health due to the damage it can do to one if they have a poor environment surrounding them. Where an individual is born and raised is not a choice that people get to …show more content…
The micro-allocation of resources is concerned with selecting which individuals are to receive scarce or insufficient health care resources (Fortes 266). Now there are many viewpoints that microallocation can take on - there is utilitarian, bare Kantian, fair Kantian, and also a mix of a little bit of everything. Being asked when taking into consideration microallocation, what would I classify myself as one of the above, it was a hard question to answer. A utilitarian evaluates actions according to their consequences and generally speaking, their actions are ethically correct when they aim to promote well-being, pleasure or enjoyment for the majority. Their aim is the maximization of welfare. (Fortes 267). For example, there is a list of individuals waiting for an organ transplant - a utilitarian person would base their criteria on who would receive that donor transplant before another based on determinants such as age, life expectancy and so on. Fortes has a perfect example of this when a list of people have been told to choose between a seven-year-old child and an 18-month-old baby. The individuals who chose the seven-year-old to have the transplant versus the 18th-month-old were stated to be utilitarian because they followed the belief of doing no harm. These people believed that the 18-month-old toddler will not understand the pain and effect of what was
Health and wellness can be affected by many factors. The lack of sufficient health care needs to be addressed; to give Americans, rich or poor, a chance of a healthier lifestyle. The definition of health may never be universally accepted, but every culture deserves equal opportunity to better healthcare. Environments will always have an affect on health, but with proper education, people can be taught more effective ways to live in an environment that can’t sustain a healthy lifestyle. As Americans, it is our responsibility to protect our own, and we should begin with our health care system.
The definition of health generally varies from person to person; for me health is the state of well-being; whether it is physical, mental or social well-being. When making health decisions many people, myself included, consider finances before making decisions. For an example before joining a gym I consider the cost and quality of the gym before considering how vital exercise is to my health. The same goes for diet I often hear people say eating health is much more expensive than eating unhealthy. Being healthy comes from putting in effort; physically, mentally, and economically.
I agree with the Dr Raphael video that good health is a vital in every person’s life. When we ask people that how to become healthy the usual response is exercise, healthy diet, avoid alcohol etc but, If someone’s economic status is poor how can they afford healthy diet and if they are not educated how do they know that which food and living condition are good for their health. After watching this video it can be said that the factors which determine the health called ‘social determinants of health’’ plays an important part in our health. Social determinant of health are employment, economic status, education, housing, social exclusion. As mentioned by Dr Raphael that a lot of people are not aware of this fact and it is important to make them
Where and how populations live (geographic), the traits and changes they exhibit (demographics), and cultural background/perspectives/beliefs (psychographics) directly impact the healthcare system. Social determinants are the key drivers behind all population trends. Social determinants of health that have negative consequences range from chronic stress to poor nutrition to poverty and inadequate living conditions. Where these determinants are a factor, chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and asthma are more prevalent.
Health is the union of three elements, these are: Social, Physical and Mental. If you're Social health is bad, the other aspects will be harmed because one aspect depends on the other, for example if you have bad mental health you're social health is also affected because if you depressed you don't want to go to a party or meet your friends. If you want to be healthy, you need to be healthy in all of the elements.
Graham (2004) & Taylor (1996), posits that social determinants of health came out of a search for a certain mechanism that allowed people from unique socioeconomic backgrounds to experience varying degrees of health and illness (as cited by Raphael, 2010). This idea takes into consideration that one’s socioeconomic status affect one’s health and pervasiveness of diseases at varying levels. McMullin & Davies (2010), observes, people who have more money, with higher education, and have better jobs tend to live longer and do not get as sick as do those with lower incomes, lower education, and bad jobs Hence, the relationship between social inequality, social determinants of health and poor health outcomes. However, in addition to socioeconomic status, some other social determinants of health include: “social support networks, education, employment and working conditions, physical and social environments, biology and genetic endowment, personal health practices and coping skills, healthy child development, gender, culture, and health services”, (p. 147). They are circumstances in which people usually have no control; they are born in, grow with, live, work, and age with some of these
There are many social determinants that are present in our society, yet many of these determinants are not discussed. This is due to the fact that categorizing and discussing social groups and determinants is often seen as controversial. Although this may be true, comprehending and discussing these determinants are essential, as many of these determinants affect our health. These determinants affect our health simply by altering our own actions as well as the environment around us. Thus, comprehension of social determinants, the environment, and its ultimate connection with an individual’s lifestyle is essential in assessing many of the public health issues prevalent
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury. According to Health psychology (2009) ‘World Health Organisation defined health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. In order to achieve good physical a nutrition diet is needed, healthy BMI, rest and adequate physical exercise is needed.
Thanks for shedding light on how social factor affects health and entire population. It is true that lack of resources to meet individual daily needs, inadequate education and unemployment may play a crucial part in maintaining adequate health. Take for instance, people residing in the rural area may not have access to free health resource and education and this may post a danger to their health. Another social condition is pollution. In areas where there is high ozone pollution, there is increase occurrence of asthma in both adults and children in regard to states and national averages (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). This could lead to lung CA, heart issues and other debilitating disease.
Many variables link the location a person lives to the influence it has on their overall health, stress levels, exposure to environmental hazards, diet, and lifestyle just to name a few. In the twenty-first century, most people follow societal norms, whether they are good or bad for them because people rarely make individual changes unless it becomes a mainstream idea or movement. Health values, although is one of the most talked about movements today. Information is available to direct people to a healthier, longer life. This information has not always been easily accessible, but is now a focus for health care. An interesting factor though is the amount of people willing to risk their health to continue their unhealthy lifestyles.
The health of an individual and their communities is affected by several elements which combine together. Whether an individual is healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment.1 To a greater extent, factors such as where an individual lives, their relationships with family and friends, the state of their environment, income, genetics and level of education all have significant impacts on health, however the more frequently considered factors such as access and use of health care facilities regularly have less of an impact.6 Determinants of health is a term which was introduced in the 1970s as part of a broader analysis of research and policy on public health. Researchers argued that there was a lot of attention and too much expenditure on health being dedicated to individuals and their illnesses, and little or no investment in populations and their health. It was decided that public health should be more concerned with social policies and social determinants than with health facilities and the outcomes of diseases.7 The determinants of health include social and economic environment, physical environment and an individual’s behaviour and characteristics. The environment of an individual determines their health, holding responsible an individual for having poor health or acknowledging them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are not likely to be able to control several of the determinants of health. These determinants that make individuals healthy or not include the factors above, and numerous others.6
How health is defined differs from person to person, what is healthy and what is not healthy is subjective. Some people say that a healthy person would live the longest or a person is only healthy if he/she is physically very strong and active. Some might even say a person is only healthy if that person is mentally strong. In my opinion, health cannot be defined in one word. Although my seventy-six-year-old grandfather would not be considered stereotypically healthy, he is a perfect example of what I consider healthy because he is mentally physically and emotionally fit and takes care of his body in every aspect.
What does it mean to be healthy? Health is a state of complete physical , mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, illness or infirmity. It is important to distinguish between disease and health. Disease is the prognosis of a particular disorder with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms. On the other hand, illness is the existence of disease
Health is anything physical, mental, and the social well being in a persons life. “Health is not the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is viewed as a state of dynamic equilibrium among the various subsystems that make up the person and the environment (Erickson, Tomlin, & Swain, 1983/2009, p. 46).”
