Unlike many traditional Embry-Riddle-Aeronautical University (ERAU) students, I began my college career having a vast amount of work experience. Many traditional students begin their college careers at the age of eighteen or nineteen, but I began college at the age of thirty four. The reason this is relevant is because when I started this class I had many preconceived notions about project management and project managers. After completing the class, I have dispelled many of these preconceived notions.

However, I have to reflect back to when I worked construction. I used to work for a grading company from 2000-2002, and the crew I was on was fast and efficient. Because of the efficiency of the crew, we were always shifting between job sites, especially when a project started to get behind on deliverables. Since the grade of the land is vital to building, if we got behind, the entire project would get behind. After this class, I now understand what the superintendent and owners were thinking. I’m almost certain that they had the slack, early start, late start, early finish, and late finish worked out. The penalties for our company, who was likely part of the critical path of the project, were probably severe since they couldn’t even begin to pour concrete until we were finished with our deliverables. Once a crew started to get close to the late finish, the owner likely called us to go in and finish the job quickly to get the project back on track. Of course this was frustrating for us since we might be in one city one day, and then in another city the next day, but because of this class, I now understand why it was a necessity. We then set priorities since some deliverables required information from previous deliverables. My assignment at this point was to construct a responsibility matrix. The way I approached this was to look at the task list that we would be using to complete the kitchen remodel, and I broke it down into categories. I used the planning stages, as well as the financial side of it, and then finally all of the different trade deliverables like electrical, plumbing, and painting (Gray, & Larson, 2014). Since Clayton was the homeowner in the scenario, the finance and planning was largely his responsibility being that it was going to be his money and his kitchen. Most of the trade activities were going to be accomplished by a contractor, so I listed the contractor as responsible while having a representative from the group as support to act as a liaison to the contractor. Having different members of the group dealing with separate contractors would alleviate confusion and avoided one member from having to deal with too many contractors. After we finished the deliverables required for the mid-term, we began work on finishing the rest of the project. For the second half of the project, my responsibilities were making the resource constrained schedule and the closeout checklist. I used the same task list that assisted me in making the

The projects in today’s world are given a lot of importance and it will continue to grow in the coming years. There are a lot of companies which do not have production, but all of them do have projects. There are a lot of books which have been published on which related to planning and managing the projects. The one of the most important one was published by the author Eli Goldratt in his book ‘Critical chain’. This book basically talks and shows how the application of theory of constraints in the field of project management. The novel is basically based on one of the MBA classes in America where a number of ideas are developed in discussions among the students and the lecturers. The lecturer is basically fighting for a tenure with the president of the university who expects a downturn in the executive MBA. The lecturer who teaches project management has a word with one the senior colleagues and project management was the right topic to teach. There were three students who were placed in the project management team of their company which manufactures electronic products. Project management is a discipline based on careful planning, organization, motivation and control of resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. Since every project is unique in nature, a project manager must learn to adapt and identify key areas to drive success. Thus, as a learning initiative, we were given a project to manage through a simulation program named Sim4Project. The emphasis of this simulation was on learning-by-doing, just like in a real-life project. Sim4Project provided a good mix of theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. Professor Leonie gave feedbacks at the end of each period to ensure we were incorporating the project management principles learned in the classroom.
Often, the goals and visions of the projects are not clearly discussed. The project management team doesn’t understand the needs of the organization.
The topic of my group (group 4) was “How to totally float through your project for free” and the presentation was held by Roger Goodman who works for PMI NZ and Ernst & Young supply chain management with many years of working experience in many different countries such as Saudi Arabia and China.
In the globalized economy, Successful project managers are in much demand across many industries. Organizations strongly need experienced project managers to lead their staff to accomplish their business goals and deliver successful projects. In an increasingly complex environment, project managers need to turn into many roles and have all kinds of responsibilities at each level of management within an organization. Good project managers are not born. They need to be trained. They develop their skills through study, practise and experience. They become better project managers after they finish a successful project each time. They learn new techniques and apply them on their projects. They learn their lessons from failed projects and then improve to be better project managers in the future.
Average hours and pay characterize these environments, but education continues apace. Few people leave the profession during these years; the hours already devoted in school make it easier to tolerate these few extra workplace indignities. And in about five years one will be leading research teams and turn into people managers as well as project managers. This is an unanticipated turn of events for some, as it removes them from the challenging, intellectually rarefied environment they enjoy and places them in a more administrative role. Over the course of my professional life, I have become increasingly involved in project management roles. Doing so has made me aware of the many varied challenges that can face projects and the project managers who are charged with bringing them through to completion. Taking this class this semester has really changed the way that I have viewed myself when it has come to work and the different companies that I have worked before. I have taken a psychology class before but I have never taken one that relates to management and organizations. This class has really helped me answer different questions such as why I was unhappy at some jobs, enjoyed some managers over others, and what motivated me to work hard at jobs. It’s good to learn that there are different terms and definitions for different feeling and things I experienced at jobs to know that their other people experiencing these things also. I will be going into a management position after I graduate, and this class helped me to learn many different ways to go about managing and things to avoid to keep a positive working environment.
When planning a new project, how the project will be managed is one of the most important factors. The importance of a managers will determine the success of the project. The success of the project will be determined by how well it is managed. Project management is referred to as the discipline that entails the processes of carefully planning, organizing, controlling, and motivating the organization resources so as to foster and facilitate the achievement of specific established and desired goals and meet the specific criteria of success required in the organization (Larson, 2014).
