Communicated with professionals and clients- Since I have never worked with patients before this fieldwork, I believe that my communication skills have definitely improved throughout this semester. I tried my hardest to exhibit clear nonverbal and verbal skills during my stay. During my first couple days, I noticed that I had less than positive nonverbal appearance to me. I would stand with my arms crossed or on my hips. I noticed this bad behavior, and I have learned to implicate a better look to me. I believe my educator saw my efforts to communicate as I as received exceptional scores in exhibiting a positive attitude, being respectful of others, and establishing a rapport. I tried to be very friendly and approachable for each client, so they can see me as likable. I tried to focus on their reason for therapy; however, a few times they wanted to talk about subjects of their choice. One of the patients wanted to talk about her dog. Twice I tried to deviate from that subject, but the dog was continually brought back up. I figured that I should let her guide what we talked about since I was the visitor to her therapy. After we spoke about that topic, I had built a good rapport, and she told me some personal things about her life. This enforced the aspect that therapy should be client centered as it allows patients to trust the practitioner. I know that I need to improve on identify client strengths and weaknesses before seeing the them. This topic improved every week as I had learned more kinesiology each week. I know that when I was learning about the shoulder when school, I never saw any shoulder patients. My learning experience within inter-professional was very productive. I personally learned about working in collaboration with other professionals. My first impression was the first seminar which took place in the auditorium with a group of students from different professionals in health care sector. The actual seminar was a very good preparation for me and everyone who is in health professionals. The seminar gave me a very understanding of my future practice. It prepared me well on what to expect as I was not aware of the purpose of mixing different students from different professionals. In this assignment, I am going to review four cases, which will require a number of different communication skills focusing primarily on; developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating assertively, communicating effectively with an individual with a disability/impairment and communicating with individuals from another culture. I found the feedback the pharmacist gave me to be most effective in educating me and improving my clinical skills. The pharmacist’s comment about my lack of non-verbal communication was especially relevant. Mehrabian’s (1981) research shows that 55% of meaning is in facial expression, 7% in spoken words and 38% in tone of voice. When conducting an interview it may seem easier than being interviewed, but truth is conducting an interview is just as tense. Going into BUAD 302, Communication Strategy in Business, I was unsure about what to expect in terms of class content. I, like I am sure you do, wondered how complex communication could be since we find ourselves communicating everyday whether it be professionally with colleagues, academically with professors, or casually with friends and family. However, BUAD 302 teaches you that communication means so much more than just how you speak. BUAD 302 teaches you about non-verbal communication, such as resumes and cover letters, something that is often overlooked, yet ultimately so important. Healthcare professionals are required to build a therapeutic relationship with their patient or client but in doing so, different forms of communication styles are required. Communication is vital for transference of information between people. For a therapeutic relationship to be strong, the nurse needs to gain trust from the patient through nursing knowledge and communication skills (Stickley & Freshwater 2002, pp. 250-256). The communication experience that I encountered was last semester during a clinical when a nurse used bad communication skills while talking to a patient. The patient was admitted to the hospital because of Gastrointestinal bleeding related to his ulcerative colitis. The patient needed to have surgery to remove part of his colon and was going to end up with a colostomy. This patient was very anxious and scared about the surgery. The patient asked the nurse what the surgery was like and if it hurts?
