This assignment is to reflect upon my learning and development in communication and professionalism throughout this module. I will identify areas for further development and develop an action plan to enable me to develop my communication and professionalism.
Reflection practice can be defined as “learn by thinking about an experiences that has happened, consider what happened, how it happened and could it have a different outcome, which enables us to take some kind of action” (Jasper, 2003:2)
A challenging new method of learning for me; I find it hard due to my perspective on myself. A reflective model like “Borton (what, so what, what next), Kolb’s (experience, reflect, thinking, acting), Gibbs, (Description, feeling, evaluate, analysis,

This is significant to find out more information, like what is really important to them to achieve. This will allow a discussion on goals that are meaningful to them and assist in their motivation to achieve goals.
My communication skills need to be exceptional as in light of the Francis Report (2013) demand for better communication throughout the multidisciplinary team teams was highlighted as it was found that the lack of effective communication both within the organization and across external parties.
Communication is fundamentally the most important thing to get right, listening and reading verbal/non-verbal signs are important especially with vulnerable people. “I have a professional duty to speak up for a vulnerable person, if I feel they are at risk” (College of Occupational Therapists 2015:16)
“Multidisciplinary teamwork is becoming more vital and recognised within the National Health Service and other sectors with the delivery of healthcare. This has led to acceptance of teamwork as being fundamental to healthcare.” (Boaden & Leaviss,
In today’s health care organizations, fewer and fewer individuals are working as solo practitioners ; instead, health care is increasingly delivered through teamwork, and teams are a vital component in health care organizations(McConnell,2006). Bauer and Erdogen (2009) define a team as a “cohesive coalition of people working together to achieve mutual goals”. (p.213). According to McConnell (2006) , teams are united by a shared purpose , regardless of the team’s type, composition, degree of performance, or reason for being. In health care organizations, teams are utilized by leaders to address problems and perform tasks. McConnell (2006) states that teams can benefit the organization because they provide greater expertise, enhance morale, improve personnel retention, increase flexibility, and create synergy in the workplace..
Communication and interpersonal skills are closely related in the nurse-to-client professional relationship. There are several different types of communication in professional nursing. They are written communication, verbal communication and nonverbal communication.
Reflective thinking is hypothesis testing, and real-time experimentation done in situations where “wicked problems” occurs that facilitates deeper knowledge and understanding (Rolfe, 2014). For Rolfe (2014), knowledge is a verb, not a noun, and he Rolfe (2001) claims that reflection- in-action is more advanced form of thinking and leads to more advanced practice. He further describes that is it is a process of what the nurse is always testing theories and hypothesis in a cyclical process while simultaneously engaged in practice (Rolfe, 1993). It means examining behaviour and that of others while in a situation (Schon, 1995; Schon, 1987). “To be able to reflect one must step outside the experience in order to make the observance comprehendible” Gray (1998).
The art of professional communication not only brings satisfaction to those who master it, but also keeps the main priority the precedence of efforts made.
The ability to reflect upon us is a valuable part of human life, insisted Taylor (2000). Reflection and reflective practice are claimed to enhance professional development, link theory and practice, promote critical thinking, lead to self-awareness a...
Reflective practice is simply looking back/reflecting on your own work style and the work that you have completed. It involves assessing and evaluating your own work and finally making the decision as to whether you will use it again or not and also how you can change/adapt the work to make it better, effective or in the care setting, more person centred.
The ability to become reflective in practice has become a necessary skill for health professionals. This is to ensure that health professionals are continuing with their daily learning and improving their practice. Reflective practice plays a big part in healthcare today and is becoming increasingly noticed.
Reflection is a key element of the human learning process. It can be used to justify aspects of practice and legitimise the knowledge gained from it, as opposed to traditional forms of learning.
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.) Reflection is a process that begins with looking back on a situation, thinking about it, learning from it and then using the new knowledge to help you in similar situations in the future. We need to evaluate through reflection to determine whether change is needed. We can then decide what action is needed and what we should do the next time we are faced with a similar situation. It might not necessarily be something you have done wrong, it may well be you were happy with the outcome of a situation you had some input into and would do again.
student. In the following journal, we see the benefit of reflective practice and what it achieves
In addition to the definition from Bond et al. (1994), provided above, Coward (2011) also states that reflection is the process of exploring our thinking and highlighting our good and bad experiences to develop them in the future. Reflection enables the professional to analyse issues that will help them improve and develop from their past experiences, gaining insight and personal development.
As it mentioned above this reflective essay is based on the main theory on Reflection, which is the Honey and Mumford’s learning styles that was developed from Kolb’s work. This is based on four stages of specific styles of learning:
Gibbs has adapted Kolb’s cycle to reflect on the feelings and emotion, when reflecting on the lesson this was a key variable that was missed out. In critiquing my reflection I would ensure that in my hybrid model this stage was reflected upon. Furthermore Brookfield concurs the notion of the four lenses; pupils, colleagues, teacher and theoretical literature which is as a result of the reflection you see the task through their perspective. I should have implemented this theory into my reflection as it creates the ideological perspective through thoughts and feelings when requesting feedback on the experience. Gardner’s (2006) multiple intelligences suggests that pupils have a preferred way of learning and developing.
The specific events in the past to where we reflected serve as a foundation of a deeper and unconscious competence in reflection. To deal with the present, we do relate our analysis and actions either with the conscientious good or with our experiences. It is a deliberate process of trying, sometimes failing, trying again, becoming confident until it eventually becomes an unconscious process. When we persistently reflect, this process becomes instinct but not an end itself as it continually evolves and progress with the new learning that comes on our
Irrespective of the environment in which one works, communication is always vital and a key factor of success. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. ‘Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the ailment, not remedies.’ (Adair 2009: 3). Communication has two main components; sending out a message to someone, and ensuring the message is received correctly to the other member of the conversation. It is thus fair to say speaking and listening are vital to effective communication. This essay will initially introduce me as a student, and my career. I will give a simple SWOT analysis of me and will then go on and breakdown the different methods and techniques of effective communication. Finally, I will talk about how effective communication is needed in my current position, as well as the future.
