As a person you develop or follow a code of conduct. Three ideals make up a persons ethical code. Morality, which is the distinction between what that person thinks is right and wrong. Virtue, which is valuing high moral standards. The third one is personal right, which is an individual ability to distinguish right and wrong and choose to do the right thing. I believe that when a person enters a career such as an educator they are making a commitment to a life style where your job and home life can’t be separated. I think a teacher is easily comparable a police officer where you are always on duty even when you are not in uniform. The lines are so blended between the personal life and professional life of a teacher your ethics cannot change from when you are in the classroom and when you are out of the classroom. As a teacher you must find code of ethics that can coexist. I try to commit my self to be the up most professional that I can be. I model my ethical guidelines on these three core values. The first point: Service before self, second point: Integrity first, and third point: Excellence in all you do. According to the AAE, “the professional educator assumes responsibility and accountability for his or her performance and continually strive to demonstrate competency”. As teachers we owe it to our students and community to be the best educators we can and continue to strive to become better. We should continue to master the content knowledge that we teach by continuing to pursue further education ourselves. Currently I am working for a Christian preschool as a co-teacher for a class of eleven 3 year old children. Working for a Christian preschool you would imagine that having and displaying good morals and ethics would be a must, however just like with any workplace there are those who sometimes break or they may say bend these ethical rules and display behavior that should not be revealed in any type of situation, especially in the workplace. Ethics are basically the procedures of personal acts that are based on ideas or a person, about what is ethically good or bad and they are range of statistics that involves these statistics. They involve legal issues and if something is illegal, it does not always mean that it is unethical, consequently if something is ethical, it does not mean it is legal.
My ethics and values are developed from my religious beliefs, my associations with professionals, and self experiences. My religion installs values such as honesty, courtesy, and determination, which determine how I treat other people. My association with professionals helps me to embrace values, such as determination, personal integrity, accountability, and excellence, which are fundamental in designing my academic and professional paths. The experiences I have encountered in life have taught me to observe and embrace many ethical values, including ambition, integrity, and responsibility, which enable me to associate well with my family and other members of the society.
To be in the education profession one is signing up to be a trustworthy, knowledgeable, devoted, and understanding individual. They must guarantee equal opportunities for everyone. Friendships may be formed; however, having professional interactions is something that is not always followed. In terms of patient confidentiality, we may not realize that a HIPPA violation has occurred due to a friendly conversation with coworkers. If a patient were to overhear their nurse discussing their information in an unprofessional manner, then it may cause issues with a patient’s dignity and their rights. If a patient’s right is violated, then it can lead to a patient’s mistrust in their caregiver, leading to mistrust in the facilities, and can end with a patient’s health being compromised. The patient is the reason for this career; if the needs of the patient are being unmet or violated then the purpose of our occupation will be unsuccessful and indifferent.
As a child, you probably don’t consider the meaning of such phraseology as “Code of Ethics”. In fact, I don’t recall that phrase ever coming into play. There is not always a right way to deal with the many daily problems that face educators, but there are ways to handle situations that are better than others. I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
