Ethics and Integrity The term “ethics” refers to an external set of rules that have been established by an institution or organization, for example, a university, and the members are expected to follow them. On the other hand, integrity refers to an individuals’ internal set of principles that guides their actions and behavior (Czimbal and Brooks n.p.). As a rule, people are usually rewarded when they follow ethical codes of conduct by an external committee or board that monitors their behavior. For a person of high integrity, the benefits are usually intrinsic. Moreover, such individuals always make the right decisions even when they are not being watched. In fact, some of their colleagues may suggest that they earned their qualifications through doubtful means. With time, the entire institution is ridiculed, and even after the situation is rectified, it is difficult to disprove its association with academic misconduct. Therefore, it is important for universities to put in place certain regulations to ensure that all students and faculty members follow the set academic codes and principles. In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. The awareness in regards to academic integrity is growing across campuses worldwide. This is a very serious subject in which students and faculty should take additional steps to educate themselves. A great example of this exposure includes Mississippi State University hosts an annual Academic Integrity week during the last week of October. “This program has been put in place to educate students on plagiarism and academic honesty and prevent future cases” (msstate.edu). Intentionally or unintentionally stealing or using another individual’s work verbatim without paraphrasing is considered plagiarism. Rules and regulations are set in place to inform students how to cite, when and where to cite, and the consequences available if the rules are not followed. “The differentiation between cultures can often confuse the true meaning of plagiarism” (Vessal, K). In this research paper I will highlight the details of Academic Integrity, the consequences if rules and regulations are not followed, and lastly tools available to avoid plagiarism.
The academic integrity of many academic institutions nationwide is becoming more challenging. This case study presents an example on how the academic integrity of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles is being challenged after they’ve decided to inflate students GPAs.
Dr. Morris states, “Despite the increase in interest [on ethics], there are pressures on schools to produce students who make money their top priority, particularly from school rankings that are based partly on how much salaries increase after graduation. Built into those structures are incentives to behave unethically” (Gardner, 2). In this case, the bottom line for the school is its school ranking. If schools are able to produce top students with secure and high salaries, the prestige of the school increases. Often times, the pressure for students to perform well is coupled with incentives such as a sense of entitlement as a “valedictorian” or a “magna cum laude” student. Within this context, it is important to keep in mind how money is perceived as a means to an end. With an increased yet secure salary comes a hierarchy of status, power, and image for both the student and the school. . In the real world, there are a limited number of seats for those to be on the top, but many people fighting to attain one of those seats. Competition creates much tension between students of the same school since the opportunity to advance and secure financial stability is appealing and restrictive. Having an ineffective system is just as bad if not worse than not having one at all. Also, peer-pressure is a very influential force in a student’s life, regardless of age, and using that to create a world of academic integrity is a powerful asset. Honor codes are intended to teach responsibility, self-respect, and integrity. A strong honor code will make sure that students understand that the strict consequences of cheating will outweigh the rewards that students may receive by trying to take advantage of the system. It is important that students are taught at a younger age to have integrity and also avoid tempting decisions such as cheating, dishonesty, and plagiarism. Many students tend to rely on cheating and plagiarism because of the lack of knowledge of the consequences of these actions. Therefore, through out of the country many collages have implemented and enforced honor codes. This may display the offences with their respective consequences, but students may still be unaware or unconsidered of these. For this matter schools should revise their honor code policies because students do not know consequences, are influenced by others and allow other students to cheat.
When discussing integrity and ethics regarding law enforcement it is difficult to just narrow down to one element representative thereof. The first item of importance referring to integrity is, to be honest, and transparent in everything that you do so that the public can see you, as a community representative, are trying to foster good working community relations and that you as a leader will not stand for any misconduct. Recently here in Nashville, Tennessee (Alund & Sawyer, 2017) we were faced with an officer involved shooting of a suspect who evaded, possessed a loaded weapon, and fought up until the point the officer felt an immense fear for his safety and the safety of the community so unfortunately he was left with no alternative. In conclusion, integrity is a vital part of all our lives. Without a basic human integrity, we are animals. Integrity defines how we live, and who we are. Are we good people? Is our neighborhood safe? Is our college a great place to live? When trying to answer these questions, you first look at the integrity. In life and in death, a man will always be defined by his integrity. Is this neighborhood safe for me to my family to? Is this college a good one to send my child to? These questions are constantly being asked, and the answer always lies in integrity.
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Integrity is the quality of being honest. When you are honest about something or a certain situation you are considered a person of integrity. Also when you have integrity you have strong moral principles. When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions.” Furthermore, having integrity is a quality that many strive to have because it often means that you are a good person.
Academic Honesty requires honesty in all things, students should not participate in plagiarism, fabrication or falsification, cheating, and academic dishonestly. If a student is involved in any of these acts the student Honor Code office should be notified. There is a procedure in place for handing situation of this nature.
So, first of all, we can state the responsibility of the students. As I mentioned in the previous paragraphs, the honor code rules depend on peoples’ perspectives, acts, and points of view. As a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, we should dedicate the responsibility of the learning process. Students should be willing to research and explore the different novels that are related and significant for our study. We should be evaluating our performance and responsibility. If students feel any discomfort or any problem in the course structure, then he or she should discuss with their advisor. At CU the advisors are more than welcome to help students with either their problems or with their difficulties. Instructors or the university faculty should help students by explaining why violating the honor code is an unpleasant action. Moreover, they must provide and identify solutions for students’ problems so that they make sure to not violating the honor code. Faculty should provide the different learning facilities. So when we can observe about the importance then we get that the Honor codes are very important for the student. Nevertheless, the Honor Code has same important for the university, so when the students are following all the honor codes then the environment of the university and class are very good and healthy. There are also bonded the students to work in some limitation, not work for an unethical way. The behavior of the teachers and the school management are very good. The relation between the student and the teachers are very helpful. I can also see the many cases in our university that the student could follow the honor codes of CU, and they can create the huge mess in the university and also in the classrooms. I remember one case when a student violates CU
Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles or simply moral uprightness. Becoming a research assistant at my university has taught me a significant amount of information about why honest is valuable, especially for researchers. The data we collect and the scientific literature we write influence the lives of many individuals, which is why a researcher must be held to a higher ethical standard than other professions. If I decided to falsify my data in order to receive a publication, I could be jeopardize millions of peoples’ health. Through my education, I have intimately learned the importance of honesty and I have been able to effectively adapt it into my everyday life.
Integrity, as discussed in class, is the ability to be personally accountable for your honor. Integrity and honor are similar since according to the Sewanee Honor Code, “one shall not lie, cheat, or steal.”
The issues and infractions mentioned above are examples of what is and has occurred at universities nationwide. This is not an isolated problem. As these corrupt acts of academic fraudulence and plagiarism continue to reoccur, it is slowing chipping away at the prestige and respect that make these educational establishments what they are suppose to be, institutions of the highest learning. By treating academics as a secondary concern to the athletic primacy, universities cannot fully accomplish their sole purpose. These acts of immoral and unethical procedures do not permit the schools from maintaining unblemished academic environments. Although part of the universities' goals are to create well rounded students, this objective should not come at the expense of academics, corruption, or unethical behavior.
Ethics are moral principles and judgements that help individuals distinguish between right and wrong. Whereas professionalism describes qualities expected of individuals in a workplace such as courtesy, sincerity and accountability which is important both, when dealing with individuals and other companies.
