The competitive nature of the powwow dance competition and the intertribal nature of the newer dances is diluting American Indian culture resulting in the additional loss of traditional beliefs and practice. Because they are more likely changing the meaning to do the competition. Originally, the powwow competition was supposed to being very spiritual thing. However, by coming new dance style such as fancy dance into the competition, the competition became less spiritual but also more focus on entertainment and make more revenue.

The concept of a Powwow has changed over time due to cultural shifts within Native American communities and the introduction of European settlers. In the modern era of the Powwow, the event is used for all Plains tribes to come together and celebrate their pride and culture. The event itself is extremely
For my ethnography project, I decided to observe Native American culture. More specifically, I decided to observe Native American powwows, and how they unite the different tribes participating from across the country and how they unite people within a tribe. Powwows are an event where Native American people gather to sing, dance, participate in contests, have food, and ultimately bond with one another throughout the occasion. The powwow that I attended was Utah State University’s 44th annual powwow, which occurred on Saturday March 4, 2017 at noon. In order to learn more about the powwow from an insider’s perspective, I talked to a girl who looked to be a young adult, and participated in the dancing throughout the event. Although

They had the freedom to do as they pleased, and today, Natives have their own dances on their reservations and other locations, such as Pow Wows. They have the right to dance and worship however and in whatever way they choose and please to. After reading other pieces on Leonard Crow Dog, I was saddened to see that he was in trouble for putting on the dances that he did. But, through his efforts, it was shown to the whole United States and how Native Americans will fight and make sure that they will not give up their livelihood. They could practice the way that they pleased as they were not hurting anybody at all. Leonard Crow Dog’s efforts were beneficial in shaping the rest of the nation in regards to his people’s culture and religion. This is significant to the rest of the country because it shows the length of religion freedom, and that even though the United States government in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries forced Natives into boarding schools and other places they did not wish to go, now the Natives could do as they yearned to because of Leonard Crow Dog. He was brave and dedicated to upholding the traditions that his people followed before him, and he wanted to instill them into the current Native Americans in that time period when he conducted those dances. Others before him were scared, or maybe not even

Native American Ritual Dancing “It has often been said that the North American Indians ‘dance out’ their religions” (Vecsey 51). There were two very important dances for the Sioux tribe, the Sun Dance and the Ghost Dance. Both dances show the nature of Native American spirituality. The Ghost Dance and the Sun Dance were two very different dances, however both promote a sense of community.
The Sadie Hawkins Dance, the dance where the girls ask the boys to the dance. Although it is a good way for couples to switch the roles of “asking”, the opinions of the people getting asked hasn’t been revealed yet.
The hoop dance is a story-telling ritual, universally adopted by the tribes of Native Americans. This spiritual dance originated as a custom of the Puebloan people in New Mexico. “ In its earliest form, the dance is believed to have been part of a healing ceremony designed to restore balance and harmony in the world”( Weiser 2). The practice of hoop dancing varies tribally, incorporating the indigenous culture of each clan. Symbolism is an essential part of the performance because of the meaning it gives to the dance. Native American ideology contains a prominent connection with the nature of life’s vitality.
Though I am Native, I have minimal knowledge about my own culture and have not ever participated in events that are often associated with Native American life. Powwow’s, stickball demonstrations and Native pageants are something rather foreign to me, so when I attended the Choctaw fair on April 19th I was quite surprised to find I had never been involved in any of these events before. It was a lively and enriching environment, one that I found to be rather enjoyable. My experience here was unlike any other that I have had before, for my only previous knowledge of my Native heritage was found only through talks with my grandfather. Though my grandfather and I were Cherokee, I found many similarities within the Choctaw regalia and weapons that

‘Dance’, the first thing that comes to the mind is the spirit of happiness, colours and immense joy. Almost all dances form conveys this message. There are also dances which are interpretative, telling stories and passing down valuable lessons to the audience and to the younger generations. Every community has a dance or two which are performed during festivals, deaths, harvest, feasts and other special occasions. When these dances are performed, they are accompanied with music and songs. For the tribal communities these dances give them identity and vice versa. A tribe’s practices, beliefs, culture etc can also be identified through their dances.
Dancing to Native Americans is many things. There are many styles, rules, customs, and culture involved. There are culture and rules specific to each separate tribe who are patting on the powwow or celebration gathering. The powwow is a gathering of many different tribes coming together to share relationships, stories, and history. But Native American dancing crosses all barriers and brings the people together, for many families it is a way of life passed down from generation to another, learned from our parents and grandparents. For me and my family we grow up practicing, participating, and learning to dance. We are welcomed into the
