Power leads to privilege, whoever have more power they are likely to have more privilege is society. Those who are privileged are usually from a high social status, those who are rich, and those who has rights and freedom to do what they want in life. In this paper, I will explain how I have had many privileges such as high social class, financially well off, etc. and how those privileges have made me a perpetrator of discrimination or prejudice. I would explore my feelings in a time of my life where I was the victim of discrimination or prejudice. I realized that I was not the dominant group in this country. I dominant were those who we were rich, the white people, the people that lived away in a better city. I felt what like those people I used to see in Bangladesh the ones working hard to live just a normal life. I realized the privileges I had that I do not have anymore. But, as I got older I realized even though I did not have the privileges I had in Bangladesh, now I have different kind of privileges. These privileges included living in a first world country, experiencing an American lifestyle and a country full of opportunities. One time that I have encountered institutional discrimination was at my work place. I worked part time at a retail store in a dominantly white people area. The worker in the store was diverse but those holding the higher positions were mainly white people. There was an African American girl who worked there and she was very hard working person. She knew all the task, she worked good with the customers but she never got a rise. She wanted to become the manager but they would not give her the position. Every time they prompted a white person to be the manger even though they did not know much about the store. Feeling frustrated she felt and found another job where she was promoted to be the manager of the store within months. She was not the first person who felt discriminated working there were other employees that said they felt discriminated for not getting the promotion the deserved. I did not feel discriminated by the employers but I would feel the discrimination from the customers. Customers often ignore me as if I did not exist or they would go to different worker with their question as if they think I would not know much about the products. If I offered help, they would first ask me “you work here” as if they never saw a Muslim person working in a high-end retail store.
