We live in a world full of many societal issues. The aspects that determine whether one will have a successful or unsuccessful life is due to their characteristics such as race, gender, and social status. In the book Is Everyone Really Equal, Ozlem Sensoy and Robin DiAngelo’s exigence is to express the following issues and to encourage the reader to work upon changing the world through social injustice, oppression, power, and community. Social injustice in our society portrays the segregation of people among different types of groups. Throughout history, humans have been divided into different social classes from lowest to highest. People in the lower class experiences many hardships when it comes to living and are seen as inferior in society. …show more content…

Women are usually targeted because they are seen as the inferior gender in society. They are often displayed as sexual objects in the media, such as in porn and video games. Because of the way women are portrayed in society, they do not have the same opportunities as men. Many people may think that sexism is not an important issue anymore because women are making their way to the top. For instance, Mary Berara, the CEO of General Motors says “There are more women in more senior roles than in 1980 when I started. But from my career perspective, I don 't go into a room and take count. I want to be recognized for my contribution and for what I do” (nymag). Women are pushing themselves to work in higher positions, to prove that they have the same ability as men. Although women are becoming more and more powerful, sexism is still a huge issue today. Women may have higher positions, but they are paid less than men. According to a news article, “In 2012, the median earnings of American women working full time year-round were $37,791. American men earned a median income of $49,398. The gender wage gap has hovered at about 77 cents on the dollar since 2007” (huffington). This means that if you do not act a certain way a White person does, you do not fit in the societal norms. On the other hand, some people believe in reverse racism, acting racist towards the dominant group. An example of a saying is, “People of Color are just as racist as we are. In fact, now there is reverse racism and White people can’t get into college or good grades” (126). This perspective shows that the person of color is the blame for why white people can not get into college because diversity is needed. However, a person of color does not get into college or good grades because of their color, but because of their determination and persistence to do well in school. Reverse racism is not true because there is no institutional power within it. White supremacy is evident because of the way society portrays a White person in comparison to a Black person. An example is the Eric Garner case. Eric Garner, an African American man, was selling illegal cigarettes in the streets of New York when Officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold while Garner desperately screamed “I can’t breathe” eleven times. Officer Daniel Pantaleo did not face any charges from killing a human being because he is white. This shows the corrupt society we live in because of a human being’s color, they are granted a higher privilege. If a Black man killed a White man for the same
