According to research done in America by Netaddiction.com, children aged between 8 and 18 expend 44.5 hours per week in front of a screen5. Japanese Ministry of Health has reported that in a study conducted in 264 schools, 6% of students in grades 9 to 11 confirmed that they suffered from internet addiction and 9% of students in grade 12 also suffered from internet dependency5. The internet addiction is also linked to other important problems among young people such as obesity or depression. This type of behavior affects the way humans interact and
According to Li, O’Brien, Snyder, and Howard (2016), problematic internet use may lead to serious psychosocial dysfunction and has resulted in a proposed diagnostic criterion for the DSM-5 in order to assess the disorder. In the United States, 6% to 11% of internet users are problematic internet users. Researchers, in fact, compare problematic internet use to the assessed criteria for gambling and internet gaming disorder. They have also concluded that college-aged teens and young adults are at most risk due to the availability of internet access around them and the direct relationship between the internet and education. Symptoms include impaired physical health such as obesity or sleep disorders, psychological distress, and behavioral problems. Students may also experience more interpersonal problems and worse school and work performance.
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, what do they mutually have in common? They are all social media websites. Social Media has become the number one way to communicate with other people from around the world. It has been beneficial and helpful to many, on the contrary harmful to some. People use social networks to catch up with a childhood friend, endorse their business, or develop news faster. Other people use it to steal identities, cyberbully, and abuse others. It has stated that social media’s are “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts” (“social media.”) With this in mind, how has social media influenced today’s society? Furthermore, how has technology transformed in the last 40 years?
Social media enables people to stay in touch even when they are really far apart. I have family living in Durango, Mexico, and websites like Facebook allow me to easily communicate with them at the touch of a button. Without social media, the only way I would be able to communicate with them is if I personally went all the way to Durango. Youtube is a major social media website that provides access to thousands of videos of almost anything, such as instructional videos. I learned how to play guitar through Youtube. Youtube can be a source to aquire knowlege because it gives people access to educational videos to do something like changing oil in one's car or cooking a family meal.
Modern technology has made information much easier to obtain. The Internet and World Wide Web have given people the ability to access all sorts of information very quickly and quite easily. This is an advantage for many people, especially in business. Scholars can quickly share information amongst each other to help them learn more about a topic for example. Students can learn more about anything they want simply by using a search engine such as Google to browse the web. In the last decade, we have witnessed an evolution of the Internet and the rise of social media. The Internet is still growing every day and only seems to be getting bigger and more complex.
Another case where computer addiction is found to be a problem is in some Asian countries. Elizabeth Cooney, in her article “Some People Need Help To Kick Their Internet and Computer Gaming Obsessions” reports that “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in girls and hostility in boys can predispose children to later Internet addiction, which they estimate affects 4 percent of children in Korea and 15 percent in China.” Furthermore, there have been reports of death due to Internet addiction as well. In Korea, a man died because he did not perform basic survival skills such as eating and sleeping for 50 hours due to his Internet addiction (Cooney). In the article “Computer Addiction No Joking Matters,” the author confirms more fatal incidents due to Internet addiction (Svensson).
Social media is a form of online communication channels devoted to society input, intercommunication, and cooperation. In social media, people can talk and interact without restriction, exchange and debate information with each other about their lives by using many different combinations of the words, personal multimedia, photos, and videos. Also, in social media, individulsa and groups can create, edit, comment on, and engage in personal conversations. There are numerous types of social media, for example, wikis, blogs, social network site, micro blogging services, and sites sharing media. At the beginning, social media was limited to a few networks sites, for instance, Bulletin Board System that allows people to communicate with each other and post a comment. Today, social media has transformed from ineffective sites to more useful and effective websites, for example, Facebook, and MySpace. Some companies are using social media to achieve their goals which is attracting more customers to company website. Three advantages of using social media in business are: raising brand consciousness, building customer relationships, and increasing performance measurements.
Social media is the fruit of the current Web 2.0 technology. It is a series of organized applications which need to have internet connection to realize their functions of producing and interchanging of the contents generated by users (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). To be clearer, the social media is what we use to exchange information in daily life through internet. The implementation of social media can be found all around us, especially with the development of portable devices, and easier internet access. With constant upgrading on mobile platform, and the efforts of internet suppliers, more and more people can now enjoy the social media applications and media web sites with a relatively lower constraint by time and space. Through using social media tools, people can receive or deliver information quicker and more effectively. The implementation of social media has made the earth smaller. Thus, it may bring about many impacts which may significantly change people’s lives.
Internet is a network that virtually connects computers around the world. It has an address network which makes communication possible between the computers. It is an open phone line and an open television channel to millions of people around the world who can communicate anonymously (Palmer, 2006). People use it to exchange files and e-mails, to surf the World Wide Web, to download songs or other types of files, to take part of discussion boards, and to send instant messages. It can be beneficial when it comes to freedom of press, and less disintermediation between people (Palmer, 2006). It can also be of assistance when it comes to doing some kind of research, finding some specific information about any topic, or even getting an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree when it comes to busy people who want to expand their horizons. However, internet has many risks in contrast to its benefits and it should not be used by children without adult supervision and parental control.
We can now connect with each other instantly over the internet. It is quicker and easier to communicate and share with each other now than it has ever been. Massive amounts of people access the internet every day, and a good number of them use social media. This means that the ability to use social media and use it well is crucial for modern businesses. Whether for public relations or advertising, social media is now one of the best ways to reach consumers.
