Social media is a network that connects millions of people around the world. Minors are one of the biggest users in social media, but should they be granted such easy access to these networks? Minors should have access to social media because it allows them to connect and learn from people who they normally would not be able to communicate with on a daily basis.
Social media enables people to stay in touch even when they are really far apart. I have family living in Durango, Mexico, and websites like Facebook allow me to easily communicate with them at the touch of a button. Without social media, the only way I would be able to communicate with them is if I personally went all the way to Durango. Youtube is a major social media website that provides access to thousands of videos of almost anything, such as instructional videos. I learned how to play guitar through Youtube. Youtube can be a source to aquire knowlege because it gives people access to educational videos to do something like changing oil in one's car or cooking a family meal.

Social media also allows people to keep up with current events and know what is going on around the world.
News channels have accounts on Facebook where they post links to articles that inform people about an event that is currently happening in the world. While people are browsing through social media they can come across these news articles that can alert them of potential hazards. Social media can be like a training ground to prepare minors for when they grow up. Not letting kids use social media is like not letting a child leave home until he is eighteen because he might encounter predators and bullies. Social media exposes kids to the real world and prepares them for problems they will come across when they grow
older. It is true that there can be predators , such as sexual offenders and cyberbullies, roaming around social websites. However, today minors are being educated in cyber safety to avoid encounters and conflict with these predators. Most high schools have professionals go to their schools to educate students on the percautions they should take and the importance of cyber-safety. The prevalence of these cybersafety talks show that the attension is high on this issue. All in all, social media proves to be a tool for teenagers and the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Minors should be allowed to use to use social media despite the fact that sexual predators and cyberbullies exist because they are being taught about cyber safety and barring them from social media would narrow their world considerably. The ablity to connect and network opens up a door to endless possibilities of cultural growth and knowlege.
The article ‘Web of Risks’ by Brad Stone, is about how young adults misuse social media and there are consequences. Cameron Walker, a sophomore at Fisher College had organized a petition dedicated to getting a campus security guard fired and put it on Facebook. Marc Zuckerberg designed Facebook in 2003 and it is a well-known website used worldwide. On the Facebook page Walker wrote that the security guard harassed students and needed to be eliminated. His plan backfired due to his use of wording and it came off threatening so he was expelled. Social media is looked at as a way to express yourself. Different social networks are used such as Facebook, Bebo, and Myspace. On these sites sometimes personal life is published,
As a result of all of this information I have provided to you, there are more cons then there are pros when it comes to social media for kids under the age of 13. It is safe to wait until the child is the appropriate age to allow them on social media. Children under the age 13 should be more into school or natural play than social media. This can affect them a lot so please take my advice and wait until they are older so all of the cons can be avoided. When they are older they will be smarter, and able to understand what and what not to do.
Although technology is rapidly growing in today's world many parents refuse to let their children use social media because of the high risk of being cyberbullied. I believe that minors should be allowed to use social media because it gives them a chance to express who they are and helps them make new friends with the same interests.
Many believe that minors shouldn’t have social media because of the immature behavior of some. Although many abuse the privilege to have social media, many use it to connect with other around the world and share their creative works and express themselves. Minors should have access to social media because it serves as a creative outlet to share ideas with others their age.
Without social media, teenagers would not be able to generate relationships with other teenagers from other schools, countries, and more. Also, they would not be able to keep in touch with their loved ones when they go out of town, or if they live out of town. Family members can look at the social media posts from the kids to keep up with what is going on in their lives (Huffingtonpost.com). Social media can also be used to join online clubs with people of the same interests. It can help teenagers really express themselves, in an environment where they feel at home.
Over the last ten years social media usage has increased, due to new websites that are constantly emerging and pulling in more people. People that use social media check it daily to see what is being said, liked and commented on their posts. People are using social media, so they can feel more involved. They want to connect with others to see what everyone is saying and doing. Some people use social media to keep in contact with their family and friends. While others use social media to express their opinion or taunt others. Whichever the case, social media is becoming a distraction. People can check anywhere and at any time. Furthermore, teenagers are active users of social media. They are constantly updating their status and commenting on others. Teenagers are able to post hurtful comments and remain anonymous, so they are using social media as their voice. Therefore, some teens are using social media to keep in contact with others. Although, some teens are using social media as a way to express their opinion, but they should consider how their comments are affecting others.
In today’s society, much advancement has been made throughout the universe. However, one that seems to stand out in particular is the use of social media. Social media has both positive and negative effects on society. This advancement has led to a difference in communication to everyone by reconnecting with others, or even informing the public nationwide through televisions such as the news or talk shows. However, is social media safe to use? Social media has a great impact on everyone in society. While allowing your children or teenagers to engage in social media a few things to consider are the risks of youth using social media, what age is too young, and also how social media is useful in some cases. Children participate in cyber bullying now and even find themselves involved in bad habits, such as sexting (Schurgin O’Keefe). According to a recent poll conducted, over 22 percent of teenagers log onto their social media site more than ten times a day (Schurgin O’Keefe). Not everything is negative towards social media, but there are precautions that need to be taken when there is the youth involved.
There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand, parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media allows students to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and for many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bullying can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information. Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day.
What is social media? The first thing that comes to mind is Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, different websites, and applications. Social media plays a huge role in every persons life. Social media can cause problems, but also helps us find solutions. Social media is used to bring to light important situations, but is used to spread hate. Social media is what everyone runs their life around. Social media is a way for us to stay connected. Social media is an important factor in building relationships, networking for business, and being kept up to date on world news.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
Social media is a medium between the two that is a good goal for media companies to reach. Many “old media” news sources have a Twitter, Facebook or other type of social media account related to their companies. The news is trustworthy because it’s coming from a well-known source, but it also comes faster than a broadcast story or a newspaper/magazine article. A good example of where having a social media account is more beneficial is with the fire currently burning in Santa Clarita. News sources such as ABC 7, KTLA, and the LA Times are able to give constant updates via “new media” about the condition of the fire and the environment around it.
Social media has token a huge step from when it first started. The more the years go by there are new trends and new technology that continues to grow. As the newer technology comes out, the younger the kids are getting their hands on the new gadgets. As a result our younger generation begins to get into the internet having their own accounts to multiple social media websites. Kids don’t realize what they can get themselves into when they get an account, it can lead them to older people (child molesters, Perverts, ect.). Since 2011, teen Twitter use has grown significantly from 16% to 24% (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2013). These social media accounts can make it easier to cyber bully there victim. Most importantly it takes away their
The first two on the list is Self- Fulfillment and supporting a cause. Ice bucket challenge is a good example for this one. The next factor is that is builds relationship. Facebook aims to connect friends. The fourth factor is that social media makes the people express themselves. All around the world, Social networking is getting stronger and stronger. All ages are getting attached to it in many ways. As a result, we aren’t paying attention to our peers. In today’s world, young people are more influenced by social networking than before. Some of those sites are Facebook, Instagram, Myspace and other. Even if social networking informs and connects us with the world around us, there are some negatives aspects that should be known toward our youngest generations. Based on two articles, “Zuckerberg Kids under 13 should be allowed on Facebook” by Michal Lev- Ram and “Facebook Users Who Are Under Age Raise Concerns” by Matt Richtel and Miguel Helft. Kids under the age of 13 shouldn’t be allowed to use Facebook or other social
Social media makes it easy for people to communicate and interact with each other anytime anywhere in the world. People can stay connect to their families and loved ones no matter how far they are from each other. That ability to communicate with people all over the world has made people much more open to other societies and other cultures as well. When people learn about other cultures they become more open to new ideas, more open to change, and more accepting to other cultures.
