In the Philippine history, Filipinos were colonized by many countries. Freedom that time was very limited especially to those who are not powerful and influential. Today after several decades, Philippines turned into a democratic country and freed in any kinds of colonization. In the fast world of technology and social media, Philippines has topped to have the highest average time in using social media sites with approximately 4 hours and 17 minutes according to Mark Camus of Inquirer.Net. This is not surprising since Filipinos was deprived of expressing themselves in the way they want.

Facebook aims to connect friends. The fourth factor is that social media makes the people express themselves. As mentioned, social media is the locus of self presentation and identity thus making social media also a way for people express themselves through pictures, status updates and many more. As said, Philippines was colonized by several countries for decades and Filipinos were deprived for freedom and rights. Social Media offers freedom that Filipinos were deprived of, decades ago. Thus, Filipinos like social media because of the freedom it contains. Another one is that Filipinos are friendly and since social media aims to build relationships, Filipinos tend to use it to make new friends or to follow someone. Number of smartphone owners in the Philippines also increased, making the use of social media really accessible (Camus). Each factor discussed are connected on why Filipinos like Social Media.
However, as said Philippines is a third world country and still Filipinos spend a lot of time in using social media. 4 hours and 17 minutes is a big waste of time.
