In the 20th century, it took very little time to find something fun to do. Outdoor activities such as sports, hide-and-go-seek, tag, etc. brought happiness to many around the world. By the end of the 90s, many turned away from these outdoor activities and looked to social media for entertainment. “The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was a social media website called Six Degrees” (Terrell). Six Degrees was the first site where one could make a profile and chat with friends. By the early 2000s, more than 100 million people had access to social media, and in 2003 the new giant came to scratch the surface of social media, Myspace. First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social media does not only have an impact on the grades of students, but on their lives as well. Cyberbullying has reached an all-time high, and many students are being driven by what others say about them on social media. “49.5 percent of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7 percent actually committing bullying behavior online” (ProCon). Social media is one of many causes why people are not persevering and being successful in

The two main causes of anxiety and depression due to social media are researched to be bullying and unrealistic expectations such as unrealistic looks, weight and valuables. Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Besides cyberbullying, there are many other negative outcomes for American youth in the use of social media websites like Facebook. For example, many teens are using shorthand and abbreviations when writing or communicating online. Additionally, teens lose themselves in social media, ignore their surroundings and even become addicted to social media. Consequences of this include a rise in obesity, devaluation in family, lack of exercise and decrease in focus on school and homework. Adolescents that use social media more often than others are more prone to “narcissistic tendencies,” “anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders” (Protalinski, 2011). American youth that share more online also display manic, aggressive and antisocial behaviors.

Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has became an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media which could include shopping, research, or other personal reason like venting and status updates. Students often connect to social media because majority of students have one so they feel included. Social Media has became an addiction to many of the students who happen to have a profile to a site. They feel the need to always be connected to society. Many of these students grades have either suffered or raised due to having better connections with other students. My essay will attempt to prove that social media has been affecting the children’s education and prevents them from reaching the academic growth they need.
In the age that we live in, social media has intergraded with college student’s daily lives and how much time is spent on social media. Social media is neither inherently bad nor good it all depends on how it is being used. “Social media are increasingly mobile, smartphones and tablets give users instant and around the clock access to social media and other web functions.” (Martinez-Aleman) When college students access sites on social media like Twitter or Facebook and get side tracked then social media is bad because it effects their education. However, when it is being used to communicate with their peers or professors then social media is a tool of good. Some researchers believe that the social media helps college
To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework. In other words, the overuse of technology such as laptops and smartphones have negatively affected healthy relationships and led to isolation, depression and psychological conditions due to the lack of support between family members.
