In 21st century, Internet has basically changed everything. It has changed how people see lifestyle, business, politics, and so on. Moreover, with a great development in technology, it is becoming easier to access Internet wherever you are. It can be seen from the statistics of Internet users in the world.

According to Figure 2.1, in second quarter of 2012, there are more than 2.4 billion of Internet users in the world. Asia has the greatest number with almost 1.1 billion Internet users. Other than Asian great populations, this number is also caused by the development in technology by Asian countries in the past 20 years. China, Japan, and South Korea are some of the countries which take over technology sectors. These countries produce high quality yet affordable mobile phones, computers, and tablets which are distributed across the world.

According to Figure 2.2, social networking takes 22% of total Internet hours spent by the users. It means one Internet user spends approximately 5.28 hours per day for social networking. It proves that social networking has become more important to Internet users. Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with Internet access.

2.4 Summary of This Chapter
Nowadays, many companies prefer social media marketing to traditional media marketing because of social media popularity. Social media channels have millions of users and this is a great opportunity for businesses to do their marketing through social media. Social media marketing and traditional media marketing have many differences. Social media marketing is free, interactive, and marketers can directly analyze the results. Although social media marketing is time-consuming until the results appear and it is forgettable.
Popularity of social media in Indonesia is caused by a great number of social media users in Indonesia. Most of them are young generations who prefer communicate through social networking to e-mail. By the first decade of the 21st century, many Internet users use faster broadband Internet access technologies. As the Internet users grow, one of the Internet phenomenons that can be seen is social networking. Basically, people use social media to interact among people where they create, share or exchange information in virtual communities and networks.

They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between organizations, communities, and individuals.
As said, Philippines was colonized by several countries for decades and Filipinos were deprived for freedom and rights. Social Media offers freedom that Filipinos were deprived of, decades ago. Thus, Filipinos like social media because of the freedom it contains. Another one is that Filipinos are friendly and since social media aims to build relationships, Filipinos tend to use it to make new friends or to follow someone. Number of smartphone owners in the Philippines also increased, making the use of social media really accessible (Camus). Each factor discussed are connected on why Filipinos like Social Media.
As of June 2014, over 42% of the world population have access to the Internet. That is over three billion people, a 741% increase in use since the year 2000. Looking at North America alone, almost 90% of the population has access to the internet. That is 310.3 million people with almost instantaneous access to information, and with the ability to communicate with people all over the country and the world. The Internet has grown significantly as a mass medium, and has radically changed the daily lives of citizens in countries with high access. It is a tool that countries, such as the United States, has integrated into most aspects of life. This has had a profound impact on the culture, society, and relationships of people all over the globe.
Second, with the development of the network, social networking sites are very convenient to access, which is an important reason for their popularity. The number of Internet users has increased with improved Internet technology, which is beneficial for promoting social networking sites. People can access these sites anytime and anywhere, as long as they have an Internet connection. This convenience has made social networking sites more popular.
Social Media means the use of web-based and mobile technologies to make communication an interactive dialogue.
