Plains Daybreak Reflection
The performance of Plains Daybreak was held at the Harrison theatre in San Marcos, Texas. The theatre was smaller than I expected, but it gave an intimate setting for the show that was taking place. The intimacy contributed to the atmosphere and made me feel closer to the performances. As a viewer, I tend to have an open mind while participating in artistic showcases. I am intrigued by abstract art. I prefer modern and contemporary dance pieces that tell a story or have a concept and leave me with questions or thoughts afterwards. Plains Daybreak was a concert dance created by Erick Hawkins to showcase a ritualistic interpretation of the first day on earth and was influenced by the Native American cultures. Some
of the preconceptions that I had of Plains Daybreak before viewing the piece, were that I thought it would be abstract and have something to take from it afterward. Based on the things that I had previously learned about Erick Hawkins, I knew that Plains Daybreak would be unlike any concert piece that I had seen before. Aside from being surprisingly entertaining, Plains Daybreak was otherworldly, abstract and harmonious. Throughout the entire piece, Plains Daybreak gave me an otherworldly, dreamlike feeling. The music was unusual, yet fitting to the movements that were taking place. The lighting combined with set sucked me into the concept of the first day on earth. There was mystical, mythical feeling about the opening music and set. When the first dancer came out I felt like I was being taken to another place, although it was something quite familiar. The costuming added to the otherworldly feeling of the piece. The headdress pieces were beautifully crafted. I could tell what animals were being represented although some of them weren’t straight forward like other costumes that I have seen. To add to the dreamlike aspect of the piece, there was also a sense of mystery. There were parts throughout the dance that were illusive, but this is what kept me drawn in. I enjoyed feeling like I was being taken from this reality to another while witnessing Plains Daybreak.
Dance can be described as an art that can express meaning through movement. The dance video “Barrier” by NobleMotion Dance was performed at the City Wide Dance Festival in 2009. “Barrier” is a well known theatrical dance used to please others. The choreographer of “Barrier”, Andy Noble uses two dancers to describe a romance that is trying to overcome a dark place in their relationship, together they reveal that love conquers all using the choreographic elements space, time and energy. The choreographic element space refers to the amount of space or distance that the dancer’s body moves.
I had the pleasure of being in Western Kentucky University Dance Department’s concert, An Evening of Dance. The performance took place on April 29th through May 2nd in Russel Miller Theatre. It consisted of many works from faculty and guest artists. I felt like the concert was a success and that the choreography was all unique in its own way. I enjoyed the pieces that I performed, and the ones that my fellow company members were in. Through the analysis of “Petrichor”, I found that each production and chorographic element plays a large part in the successful outcome of a dance and emotional responses can be evoked by the simplest ideas.
Learning about Dance: Dance as an Art Form and Entertainment provides visions into the many features of dance and inspires scholars to keep an open mind and think critically about the stimulating, bold, ever-changing and active world of dance. Learning about Dance is particularly useful for those who do not have a wide and diverse dance contextual, such as students in a preliminary level or survey dance course. This book consists of twelve chapters. Chapter one dance as an art form focuses on the basic structures of dance. Dance is displayed through the human body, it has the control to communicate and induce reactions. Dance can be found in many different places, it enables the participants and seekers to touch and knowledge the joy of movement. Dance is discovered as being one of the oldest art forms worldwide. Dance existed in early cultures was recognized in a sequence of rock paintings portrayed dance. Since this discovery of rock paintings, several other forms of art have been found that depict dance. People used rituals in order to worship the gods and believed that the rituals held magical and spiritual powers. During the ancient period civilizations sentient decisions began to be made with regard to dance. Other periods that had an impact on dance were the medieval period, the renaissance period, and the contemporary period. Chapter two the choreographer, the choreographer is a person who comes up with the movements created into a dance routine. The choreographer expresses themselves through choreography because this is their way of communicating with the audience. In order to be a choreographer you must have a passion for dance. Revelations is a contemporary style dance that tells the story of African-American faith and tenacity from slavery to freedom through a suite of dances set to spirituals and blues music.This choreographic work was first performed in New York City on January 31,1960 at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and later recognized to be a signature piece for the theater. Alvin Ailey is the original choreographer of the masterpiece titled “Revelations” and also the founder of the dance theater where the piece Revelations is mainly showcased, Ailey was an African-American born January 5,1931 in Rogers, TX , only 29 when he decided to develop this dance piece. There was a time where opportunities for male dancers like himself was severely limited, so that 's when he decided to establish his work, this dance performance was Ailey 's idea for African Americans to express their talents,cultural history, and experience and was also encouraged by his memories of living in the south and his understanding of human development.

One of the first concerts ever produced by his company was titled Blues Suite, which was a well-received depiction of poverty in the deep south set to a soundtrack of blues music. This concert was an integral part in defining Alvin Ailey’s choreography technique, which is loosely based on the technique associated in ballet with strong legs and feet, while still maintaining a more evocative, modern-style torso. However, the most critical element that determined the specific style of each piece was solely dependent on the story he wanted to tell. Revelations was a magnificent showcase of storytelling that quickly became Alvin’s signature dance concert. He drew inspiration for this piece from his memories as a child growing up in the south. According to the Dance Heritage Coalition, the concert, which has been viewed by twenty-three million people worldwide, featured the sounds of negro spirituals and gospel music with depictions of common worship rituals including baptism in Wade in the Water, the sacred act of taking communion in I Wanna Be Ready, and prayer in I’ve Been Buked (1). They would dance contemporary to Holiday’s slower jazz songs, which were also her songs with the most serious stories told in them. Performing this style of dance helped to tell the story of hers songs. The dance truly helped to accentuate the message of the song “Strange Fruit.” This song describes the horrific lynchings that took place in the Jim Crow South. The contemporary choreography to this song showed the sadness and confusion that many people felt towards the lynchings. The dancers would come onto the stage in small groups of two or three, and I noticed many of them would do a slow, controlled grand battement followed by dropping their torsos to their feet when they brought their legs back down. They would then proceed to exit the stage, and be followed by the next group of dancers. When I watched this, I felt as though the dancers were showing the pain and despair that people felt before lynchings, and how they next lynching would happen soon

Contemporary 20th century choreographer Paul Taylor used the components of dance -space, time and energy to explore the struggle of an individual versus the conformity of the masses in his dance Esplanade. In addition, Taylor intertwined the principles of contrast, repetition, and resolution throughout Esplanade to portray the emotion, which accompanied this isolation. This esplanade (a long, open, level area usually by the sea) represented the journey of an independent women’s movement against the societal norm of heterosexual couples within the masses.
The fall dance concert, Rise, was held in the University Theatre at California State University Dominguez Hills. The individuals that helped make this concert come to life are the faculty choreographers: Amy Michelle Allen, Marco Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker. They were accompanied by two senior student choreographers, Alanna Neely-Sanchez and Mavra Pedraza.

Throughout this class, there were many social issues and whom they affect discussed. I loved this class for the reason of getting myself more familiar with what is happening around me and around everyone else in the world. This class was an eye opener to major social issues that people are faced with so in this paper, I am going to talk about the seven objectives we were supposed to obtain from this class.
