What makes one engage in physical activity and what hinders one from getting involved in physical activity. In the general population, the first factor was a lack of awareness of the importance of physical activity. Pate et al. (1995) stated that physical activity is needed for health promotion and disease prevention. They also stated that every adult should do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise everyday if possible. Moderate intensity exercising includes activities such as brisk walking and cycling as stated by the Department of Health (2011). They also state that regular physical activity will improve a person’s mental health as it will increase self esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical wellbeing is also enhanced by an increase in physical activity. The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2002) found that in developed countries 20% of heart disease and 10% of strokes are due to physical inactivity. Furthermore a lack of physical activity is found to cause 3% of all diseases.
Due to the strong and growing evidence in scientific literature on the beneficial effects of physical activity on health and well-being, the importance of Clinical Exercise Science has increased. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Exercise, is a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful in the sense that the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is the objective (http://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/pa/en/; last accessed on 30 April 2016). Generally speaking, Clinical Exercise Science is an applied clinical branch which deals with the application of various exercise modalities for
Financial costs of physical activity behavior in regards to the cost of a gym membership had appeared as a barrier for five participants. Otherwise, participants should admit that there were other avenues in which physical activity was possible without incurring the cost of a gym membership (Buman, Yasova, & Giacobbi, 2010). The consumption of alcohol was also pointed out as other barriers preventing the elderly from exercising (Ashe et al., 2009).

It is important for the seed of exercise to be planted into a non-exercisers head for them to move through the phases of the TTM. If they don’t realise the potential the behaviour change can give them they won’t consider changing the behaviour. To move from the pre-contemplation phase to the contemplation phase all it takes is one thought from a person to come to the idea of a possible behaviour change. This is why it is important for not only personal trainers, but other bodies such as sporting clubs, gym, the government to encourage a healthier way of living. If this encouragement does not continue the negative behaviour of not exercising will increase thus increasing their risk factors and risk of developing chronic diseases over time.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services “adults should get at least two and a half hours (150 minutes) each week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity ("Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans-)”. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only about 20% of adults are actually exercising the recommended amount ("CBSNews"). This leaves the other 80% of adults at a disadvantage. Inactivity in adults yields even more increased risk than children. Adults who do not exercise and do not get the proper nutrients are more at risk for “high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer ("Why Is It Important? -")”. Unlike children, adults are more aware of these risks, however adults have more reasons to be deterred. The most common reasons adults don’t exercise or eat healthy are that they don’t have time, they feel uncomfortable with their current physical condition, they lack energy due to a poor diet, or they just haven’t developed a habit for exercising ("CBSNews"). The last reason reiterates the need for better physical education
Physical activity- By having a high physical activity level you would have a stronger heart than can pump blood more blood around the body. There would also be a greater blood supply to your bones as more force would be placed on them making them stronger. The joints would become more freely moveable as the synovial fluid would change from a gel like substance to a more runny fluid to create less friction at the joint. There will also be decreased risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity.
Participation in sport, particularly in adults is shown to be rapidly decreasing. In The general Household Survey (2002, cited in National statistics) it was discovered that with the exclusion of walking, only 43% of the population had participated in some form of exercise in the four weeks prior to the research interview. It is accepted with recent statistics that participation rates in the UK are not adhering to the advised five times a week from the Department of Health, the author feels this is a worrying reality as there are many health implications resulting from a national neglect towards exercise.
