Introduction –
This essay will discuss the philosophy, pedagogy and the style/methods of the coach. “A coaching philosophy is a set of values and behaviours that serve to guide actions of a coach” (Wilcox and Trudel, 1998) p-57 in USC, this will elaborate more on where it would be used, how it would be used, what impact it has, examples of when it has been used and a practical example of when the coach’s philosophy has worked. The type of style and method is an important subsection, and plays a key role in sports coaching which will be detailed in the next paragraph on where it would be used, how it would be used, what impact it has, examples of when it has been used and a practical example when the coach has found a success in the style and

Professional conduct is a philosophy that the coach uses and the areas that are covered are discipline and respect which are key roles in the subsection because they provides a understanding to athletes to know that the coach will not tolerate any bad behaviour what so ever and if anything was to occur there would be consequences. Respect is huge in being part of a team because the coach wants his athletes to respect the coach and their teammates in any aspects of the game. Professionalism must be used at the very beginning as it outlines and gives athletes the awareness of the type of coach they are with. “This is why what may seem like a rather ‘dry’ or boring question will take us into the realms of a coach education, professionalism, expectation about the coach’s role, coach-athlete relationships, and the expectations of athletes” (Strafford, 2011) p-5. It is important that when addressing to athlete that respect is what the coach is looking for, it must be said in a serious manner so that the athlete takes the coach serious and understand the expectations of the coach. The way a coach communicates reflects on how the athlete react. “The way a coach uses communication to deliver information and knowledge it enables athletes to learn, build confidence, competence and capacity, and problem …show more content…
“Sport pedagogy is interested in the ways in which children and young people can be supported to learn sport-specific skills and, importantly, how that learning can be structured and managed to ensure they also gain wider personal, social and health benefits from their participation” (Armour, 2011) p-12. It challenges the athlete to the development of the technique which may be gradually introduce and will be in the form of area, aim or point of difficulty in practice depending on the rate of improvement in the player’s performances. It is a type of practice that is delivered after a warm up because it is technical. If the coach gets the athletes straight into the practice it is not good for athletes as there is always a risk of injury. The technical practice that the coach is delivering regards passing. This allows them to learn different types of techniques and then is able to relate into a proper game situation. “Pedagogy looks at the relationship between pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, the different philosophies of learning underpin these practices and examples of the way aspects of these theories are understood in practice across a wide range of context. This, in particular, provides readers with critical frameworks for examining views of pedagogy and analysing
In order to see outcomes in this area of improvement, we as coaches must re-evaluate not only our athletes, but, in addition, our coaching styles. Of course, we all want to tell ourselves that we are great coaches and it's the athletes who are not following direction...
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
Extensive instruction in sport science is covered in order to provide a scientific basis of understanding for rational development of technique and training programs. The sport science portion has been developed by the American coaching programs. The sport science portion has been developed by the American Coaching Effectiveness Program and the nation Coaching Education Committee. It includes sport psychology, pedagogy, and sports medicine. Coach’s average salary was 28,360 in 2012.
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
The journal article, “What does sport mean to you? Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. This support can further be developed through proper positive mindfulness and code of conduct guidelines set forth by the coach; for instance, hazing should be discouraged and proper communication and helpfulness among teammates should be
To be a successful teacher not only in physical education but in all classroom settings you must be able to fully stimulate your students to think critically about the problem at hand. In sports thinking critically and making split second decisions can be the difference between winning and losing; through repetition students will be able to better identify which situations call for which moves. This ability to identify one's current situation in a given activity and react appropriately is referred to as tactical awareness; this is the basis for the tactical games model. Through implementing the tactical games model in your classroom your students will better understand not only the games being played but the tactics that are universal to all sports.
The effectiveness of the coaching method depends completely on the coach, his personality, and the needs of the student-athletes. Each program and institution is unique and has different institutional goals and objectives that attract different student-athletes compared to other colleges or universities (Koivula, Hassmen, Fallby, 2002).

Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
Sport pedagogy as a whole is the root, structure and base layer of youth athletes being educated in sport, it is how the “children learn, both in and through sport” (Armour, 2011, P12). The word ‘andragogy’ tends to be the word which is used as pedagogy for adults. (Armour, 2011). Pedagogy is learning how to succeed the best levels in practice and also how to have maximum impact on your students and their needs, in addition, the learning is brought together by innovations, technology and social media (Dr Victoria
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide

Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise and physical activity. Some sports psychologists work with professional athletes and coaches to improve performance and increase motivation. Other professionals use exercise and sports to enhance people’s lives and well-being. While finding ways to help athletes is certainly an important part of sports psychology, the application of exercise and physical activity for improving the lives of non-athletes is also a major focus.
The main goals behind Sport Education are to help students become knowledgeable about different sports and activities to the point where they can participate in these outside of the classroom to stay active. Also it teaches execution and strategies and encourages competitiveness. It is important for kids to be competitive because they will have to be in life and it will teach the importance of winning and losing the right way. “Sports offer kids a great chance to work cooperatively toward a common goal. And working coope...
Sports in America have many different levels of competition, each with a particular purpose that correlates to their philosophical position. However, I believe that the overall philosophical trend of the sports construction in America is one of Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is an extension of the theory of natural selection made famous by Charles Darwin. The idea is that the fittest individuals are the ones that are be capable of leaving the most amount of offspring, in turn having an impact on the future direction of the particular species. This is where the mantra of “only the strongest survive” originates from. While it is true that at the younger competition levels this philosophical idea does not hold well to sports, however, consider the following analogy: A large pool of athletes in the younger age groups are like the starting population size of a species. However, as the age groups rise, like to high school, college, and maybe to professional leagues, the pool of athletes becomes vastly depleted. This is very similar to individuals in a species dying out to various causes, the idea is that only the strongest survive. Athletes competing at the professional level are so competitive that sometimes they will seek to circumvent the rules of the sport in order to survive and thrive. That is why the philosophical construct of sport in America is that of Social Darwinism. Professional athletes are at the top of the food chain and are under fierce competition and scrutiny from their fellow athletes, and the ever watchful eye of the media. The result is athletes tend to treat their sport more as a game of survival and compete ruthlessly in order to be the best instead of playing for a pure love of the game.
