The Freedom to Do
In the year 1776, the Founding Fathers of the United States of America wrote the Declaration of Independence, in which they declared that all people had the unalienable right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Liberty, or the concept of free will and freedom, is an ideal that is still steadfast today, but many are unsure about what their unalienable right really means, especially in relations to one’s own rights. If Unites States citizens, especially young adults entering the adult world and work place, are ignorant of the liberties that are automatically granted to them, how can one exercise them to the fullest? If someone is unaware that they can legally vote, they are unable to help decide political changes,
As such, one’s actions cannot infringe on another’s liberties. This is where the concept of laws comes in. An example of such would be the freedom of speech and for peaceful protest. If a well know newspaper prints an article against a citizen’s views and they peacefully state or show their opinion against the paper, both sides are within their civil liberties. But if the citizen where to start a violent rally or riot against the company and forced the paper to write something different, they would not be covered by their civil liberty, as it only covers the right to a peaceful protest. The citizen would be arrested for their non-peaceful protest, and infringing on the freedom of the press. Similarly, liberty is in contrast with the concept of determinism, or the idea that human beings have absolutely no free will and cannot be held morally responsible for their actions. Determinism is a doctrine that all events are determined by an external cause, including that of human actions. With this concept, it is believed that no one had free will or liberty, and as such no one can infringe on the rights of others, as they do not
Liberty, or the concept of free will and freedom, has numerous applications in daily life, and defers vastly from the concept of determinism. From the right to vote and chose who will be in charge of everyone’s liberties, to the right to marry whomever one chooses, liberty is an ever expanding topic. It is, and always will be, highly important for every United States citizen, especially the young adults of our future, to know and understand their liberties, so that they are able to protect
Civil liberties can be defined as the basic rights and freedoms of an individual granted to citizens in the United States and the entire world through the national common law or the statute law. The liberties include freedom of association, speech, movement, religious worship, and that from arbitrary arrest. The liberties get to form the roots of democracy in society. In a dictatorial administration, the citizens are denied the rights and freedoms. However, liberties can be described as universal rights and freedoms.
In order to fully understand what constitutes as a civil liberty the definition of a civil liberty must first be established. A civil liberty is defined as “Those rights, such as freedom of speech and religion, that are so fundamental that they are outside the authority of government to regulate” ( Schiller, Geer, & Segal, 2013). Essentially meaning that a civil liberty is a basic human right that not even government should be able to interfere with it. Quick examples of these rights are freedom of speech, press, religion, etc.
... For example, one right a may be able to override another right b at the individual level of rights; your right to enjoy doing z or your right not to be interfered with your enjoyment of z is “trumped” by my personal property rights to z. But one might ask: can’t rights be suspended or restricted? For instance, is it not permissible to use the death penalty or to restrict a person’s liberty when they have committed a crime? There may be other, perhaps utilitarian reasons to allow these things, but it doesn’t follow that these acts are morally justified at the same time.
All in all, each view of the philosophy of free will and determinism has many propositions, objects and counter-objections. In this essay, I have shown the best propositions for Libertarianism, as well as one opposition for which I gave a counter-objection. Additionally, I have explained the Compatabalistic and Hard Deterministic views to which I gave objections. In the end, whether it is determinism or indeterminism, both are loaded with difficulties; however, I have provided the best explanation to free will and determinism and to an agent being morally responsible.

The reconstruction Era is the time after the civil war when we started to form ourselves as a complete united country. The civil war ended in April of 1865, and Abraham Lincoln was sadly assassinated less than a week later. Reconstruction was Lincoln’s idea, and he was largely anti-slavery, so his plan for reconstruction involved all states to draft new state constitutions that completely abolished slavery. It was his ultimate goal to reunited our nation after the war. Unfortunately, after his death, Lincoln’s vice president, Andrew Johnson, took over, and introduced a different plan for reconstruction. He said that states had to take a vow to abolish slavery before they could be readmitted into the nation, but after that, horrible black codes
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
Eggs came first. Millions of years before mammals, eggs existed, their hard shells unlike her mammalian sister who waddles around, heavily crippled with the burden of her womb. Eggs conferred evolutionary advantage.
Imagine dedicating your life to a university not only on the academic level, but also the athletic level. With a full scholarship your time is dedicated to getting to class on time, finishing assignments, and making it to mandatory practices while also maintaining a strict workout schedule. With your day pretty much full of responsibilities, you do not have the time for a job to pay for anything that you may need outside of tuition, books, and housing. If your car breaks down or you run out of gas you have to pay for that out of your own pocket which is fairly difficult when you do not have an income to cover the costs and if you accept money or free services from any businesses, you could lose you eligibility as a NCAA athlete and lose your
Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that is it stupid.” Sir Ken Robinson stated that schools are destroying children 's creativity with their curriculum, there are many facts that support this idea. Students are required to think a specific way, prepare the way teachers want them to be prepared. Students also have their own opinion, because they are not afraid to be wrong, and need a way to move forward.
“Thomas Aquinas once wrote that it is better to know a little of what is important than a lot of what is unimportant” (Stancil, 252). Students should have a balance of street smarts and book smarts so they can be successful in whichever career they may choose. If the typical education focuses on teaching the students only certain areas they may or may not use, then how will the students be completely prepare for life? If education is supposed to prepare students for life, then can anyone really limit or define education? Kim Jones, a CEO who wrote an article on education, claims “Education does not have a single purpose; it serves multiple objectives, and the relative importance of each of these objectives can be very personal” (Forbes.com).
Since the dawn of humanity, exercise has been crucial for physical survival. In recent times, however, exercise is losing its significance to human survival. Some would argue that it already has lost its significance, and as exercise becomes less important, people exercise less. According to fitness.gov, only 33% of adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week (citation). Clearly there is a problem. However, there is still a fraction of the population that exercises diligently. Why do these people stick with it? Exercise has countless advantages that are still extremely important to our lives. So even though the need of exercise may appear to be diminishing, the practical effects should be enough to encourage people
Throughout the semester, I have developed many skills and have greatly improved on my writing. At the beginning of the year, I had no clue how to format a paper in APA. I had only used MLA format before this year, so I was clueless. Also, I never knew how to correctly write an introduction. I did not know that an introduction needed to include a hook. I knew that it needed a thesis statement but I was never writing my thesis correctly, until this year. Finally, I never knew how to correctly include transitions.
Freedom, or the concept of free will seems to be an elusive theory, yet many of us believe in it implicitly. On the opposite end of the spectrum of philosophical theories regarding freedom is determinism, which poses a direct threat to human free will. If outside forces of which I have no control over influence everything I do throughout my life, I cannot say I am a free agent and the author of my own actions. Since I have neither the power to change the laws of nature, nor to change the past, I am unable to attribute freedom of choice to myself. However, understanding the meaning of free will is necessary in order to decide whether or not it exists (Orloff, 2002).
Around the world there are countries that still don’t allow some or all of their citizens to vote. However in America the right to vote is simply given to every American citizen over the age of 18. So you’d think that every US citizen over the age of 18 would be voting for everything, right? WRONG. Out of everyone in the US only 57% voted at our last presidential election. So out of the two hundred and forty-eight million people in the United States of as of November 30 who are eligible to vote only about 57% of the population will vote for the presidency. So out of two hundred and forty-eight million people only about one hundred and forty-three million citizens will cast their vote in the upcoming presidential election. And this is a vote
