Should students have to take Physical Education every year, or should they have the choice to participate in it or not? Schools are wanting students to take Physical Education every year as a required course. Physical Education isn’t based on just exercise. If anything, it’s students playing games more than doing actual exercise, but these games involve physical activity. For example, flag football, basketball, kickball, etc. Basically Physical Education is a fun way of doing physical activities. Finally, the most important reason is Physical Education should be a class because it increases the health of teens. It controls your weight, strengthens your bones and muscles, and increases your chances of living longer. You get all of this from at least doing 30 minutes of Physical Activity. For the first time in years, schools are considering imposing an extra mandatory class on students with the hopes of solving a deadly problem; however, it could be causing more problems rather than diminishing it. A statistic recently released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, has stated that in America, 31.3% of 10-17 year olds are either obese or overweight. To combat this issue, The President’s Council on Physical Fitness has introduced a proposal that would require every high school in the United States to have a daily and mandatory physical education class in order to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Very few states require P.E. daily for high school students; however, many states are considering adopting the proposal. Doing so seemed like a great way to combat the growing problem until I thoroughly researched the topic and found that the negatives outweighed the possible positives. Calvin Christian adopting the proposal created by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness regarding mandatory daily P.E. classes would be a huge mistake due to the negative effect on student’s physical and emotional health, the likelihood of an increased budget, and the possible cut of valued classes.
I believe schools should not force students to participate in organized sports. Medical conditions, such as asthma, prevent students from being able to participate. Family situations may leave the student with no ride to or from practice. Students may not have time to be able to
Physical education should be a fun class, but fun does not have to mean chaos. I believe in a structure that will allow the students to have fun in a safe way. My lesson plans will be structured so that students are constantly engaged in physical activity. I feel that if I can keep students moving and learning, then the chances of misbehavior will decrease. In elementary school I feel that Instant Activities should be used to get students moving when they get into my class. High school is a little different. I feel that students at the secondary school level should be introduced physical fitness activities that will help keep them in shape later on in life.
Furthermore, instead of separating physical education and health classes, we should combine fitness and wellness programs. This program is where students can understand the how and why of fitness. These are all examples of fitness education, as you can see it goes hand in hand with physical fitness. You need the proper fitness education to engage in physical fitness, and have it be something that you chose to do for your life. Many children in the public school system will tell you that they do not enjoy going to PE because they feel it is a pointless class. Most students are only active in PE a third of the time, making it a waste of their time. The games played in PE are not strenuous enough to give enough activity. PE takes away from another academic class that could help with college acceptance and boosting GPA, which would be much more beneficial for students. Even though some people say PE is beneficial all four years of high school, students will not benefit from PE being mandatory throughout their entire high school career and would benefit more from being able to take an academic class in its place.
Majority of these people also happen to be the one’s who do not engage in physical activity and do not consider their health a top priority. These individuals have the preconceived idea that students should be spending more time in classes, such as, math, science, literacy, and history. These individuals basically assume that these are the only classes that matter and are going to help children with their future career. The people who do not support physical education are oblivious to all the beneficial skills that this class teaches children. Additionally, some parents think that physical education activities can be done outside of school, and that students will become too exhausted to concentrate on schoolwork. An article titled “The Pros and Cons of Mandatory Gym Classes in Public Schools”, expresses that a large amount of physical education programs are not benefiting students because they are unorganized(Mueller, 1). This leads students and adults to believe that they would almost be better off without physical education class, and given more time for other studies. Furthermore, the article mentioned that students who spent more time being active in gym class, were less likely to be active after school. I believe that fitness has a greater impact on you mentally than it does physically. Fitness releases chemicals that cause you to feel better instantaneously, improving mood for 24 hours. Fitness makes you more confident and improves your self-esteem, key for ridding anxiety and depression. Fitness makes you set goals for yourself, motivating you to improve yourself everyday. It gives you a boost of energy after, making you feel like you can conquer the world, or to just do your homework.
The value of physical education P.E. teachers bring to schools and their students. P.E. has an effect on everyday life. With this in mind I feel P.E. is highly valuable. Physical education activities have development in mind. Children can participate in a variety of activities and are encouraged to achieve overall wellness by continuously staying active.

The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
Sport at school should NOT be compulsory. Sports training and PE take up time that could be better spent learning other subjects, and PE and Sport are not as important as other subjects like maths, science etc. It is also my belief that it students should have the right to choose whether or not we do sport/PE, because we are allowed to choose the subjects that are more important, so why are we not allowed to choose whether or not we do sport?Every year in PE, we do the same sports and the same practice drills, so after year 7, there is no point continuing to do PE, because the you are just doing the same things that you have done in previous years. 2 periods per cycle are spent on PE, 2 periods which could be spent on subjects like foreign languages, which are only allocated 4 periods per cycle or English or Science, which get 5 periods per cycle.
