Youth Competitive Sports have been around for the longest time, but would your kids play? There is a big debate throughout United States weather kids should play. Youth Competitive Sports is huge thing in the world and I think youth sports are great ways to kids started on sports for high school and college. Two reasons kids should play Youth Competitive Sports are the it can relieve stress and can lighten up their self esteem. To begin, Youth Competitive Sports can help kids with their Self-Esteem. The Livestrong website says, “Improved Self Esteem is another benefit of Youth Competitive Sports” (Davis para. 4). Kids that learn this can tend to do more or try harder. “Losing with his team can also increase self-esteem, as he learns to hold his head high and try his best” (Davis para. 4). Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent of those who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease in grades in school.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
I have experienced that some older kids get down on themselves if their team lost. Instead they should focus on how they played the game because at their age they are probably going to lose at that age because they should face competition. He once said, “You don’t get away from competition unless you go to a system where everybody gets to do whatever they want, whenever they want.”

In today’s society more than 40 million children play competitive sports. (National Council of Youth Sports (NCYS)) This means if they ban or get rid of competitive sports they will be depriving 40 million children’s way of being active and having fun.
