The AFC East is wide open this year they said. There’s no offensive line to protect New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the heavyweight defensive lines of the Dolphins and Cardinals, not to mention the Jets and Bills they added. There’s no Rob Gronkowski to be a safety target for Garoppolo to fall back on when he needs a big third down conversion. “Jimmy G, 1-3”, Patriots haters chanted as they gleefully waited for Ndamukong Suh and former Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones to eat Garoppolo alive every time he dared drop back in the pocket. Well, two games into the NFL regular season, it looked like the Patriots might have found the guy that could eventually take the reigns when Tom Brady retires or moves on.
On Sunday night of the opening

weekend under the bright lights, nobody expected Garoppolo to go into Arizona and play well against that defense. Jones, Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and crew headline a ferocious defense that is very much in the conversation for top 5 in the league. ESPN NFL experts were unanimous; the Cardinals were going to win the game. Come Sunday night, however, Jimmy G went into University of Phoenix Stadium and took the Patriots down the field for a touchdown on the opening drive. During the rest of the game, Garoppolo managed the offense and made big plays without costing his team by committing back-breaking mistakes. After the Cardinals’ missed field goal in the final minute went wide, Jimmy G and the Pats escaped Arizona with a win and rising expectations. Patriots fans were quietly optimistic about playing in Miami in Week 2; the vaunted Dolphins defensive line was certainly a cause for worry. The Patriots offensive line is one of the weaker units on the team, and any team would struggle against Suh, Cameron Wake and Mario Williams. Plus, there usually seems to be a division game each season where the Patriots experience a hiccup and lose a game that they probably shouldn’t. Maybe that was going to be the game against the Dolphins. Well, that notion was quickly thrown away as Garoppolo led the Patriots to an early 24-0 lead that saw him throw for a ridiculous 234 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Unfortunately, a big hit forced Garoppolo out of the game and kept him from starting Week 3 against the Houston Texans. Regardless, the young quarterback’s play was absolutely magnificent, which has to make about half of the league sick to their stomachs. Can you imagine being a Cleveland Browns fan?
A fanbase that this weekend will endure another quarterback who is likely doomed to fail, only to be replaced by another eventual failure? Can you imagine being a Chicago Bears fan? A fanbase that has to watch Jay Cutler break down week in and week out, and has not had a really talented quarterback in decades?
Here you have the Patriots, which have the greatest quarterback of all time in Brady on the back end of his career. Brady is forced to sit out a few games and this kid Jimmy Garoppolo comes in and absolutely lights it up. It looks like the Patriots may have found their signal caller for the next fifteen years, and they still have their old one playing at an elite level!
That said, Jimmy G has only played roughly six quarters of professional football. Lots of players have flashed for a couple of weeks, or even a season in some cases. Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick are both great examples of this. Further, the Patriots have a pretty bad record of drafting quarterbacks not named Brady under Patriots head coach Belichick. Remember Ryan Mallett (2011), Zac Robinson (2010), Kevin O’Connell (2008), Kliff Kingsbury (2003) and Rohan Davey
(2002)? But there’s something about Garoppolo that makes him seem like he’s the real deal. Belichick drafted Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, when the Patriots could have used that pick on an impact roster player who could help them win right away. That tells me Belichick really likes the kid and was willing to invest valuable draft capital to secure the team’s future, albeit at the minor expense of the present. Also, none of the Patriots’ quarterback failures were drafted as high as Garoppolo. Belichick didn’t need a Brady successor when he took those quarterbacks prior to Garoppolo, but he now seems ready to develop the next guy. When the greatest NFL coach of all time picks someone, there's probably a very good reason why. Finally, just watching the kid play makes one think he’s the real deal. Considering his very mediocre preseason, Garoppolo’s play came a bit out of nowhere. Still, the throws that he made against Arizona and Miami were anything but mediocre. Pinpoint precision with velocity on throws down the field are not the kind of throws we usually see from any backup quarterback. The Patriots’ gameplan against Miami itself was an indicator of the confidence the team has in Garoppolo. To put it simply, that was a Brady gameplan. Garoppolo fired the ball down the field from the start, putting on a full offensive assault. If the Patriots were fearful of potential mistakes from Garoppolo, the gameplan would have been the same as it was when Jacoby Brissett played the second half of the Dolphins game and against the Texans. Brissett ran basic screen and running plays, which made the game as easy as possible for him. While most of us can’t wait for Brady to go on his revenge tour across the NFL starting in Week 5, there’s also extreme excitement and optimism about what the post Brady era will be like.
Their owner’s thirst for television coverage and eternal relevance has given him the nickname “The Ringmaster.” Enter New England Patriots. The team adorned in red, white and blue
The Rams already have a pretty stacked offensive rushing player in Todd Gurley and solid receiving corps with players like Tavon Austin and rookie Pharoh Cooper, but their quarterback position has been shaky the last couple of seasons and the three players eyeing for the position this year haven’t been too bad this preseason. Case Keenum is most likely going to start, unless he is injured or either Jared Goff or Sean Mannion just do something amazing in the last preseason game. That begs the question, what will Goff’s role be as the number one overall pick. He will most likely turn into the #3 QB and won’t make any starts this season, unless Keenum comes down with an injury. Even though Prescott will get the opportunity to start for the Cowboys, Goff will be in a better position because he isn’t on a team that will most likely finish last in their division. The Rams might be in the division with the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers, but they have a team that looks good enough to beat out at least two of these teams this upcoming year. If the quarterback position, whoever it may be, can stay solid, the Rams have a great opportunity to even make the playoffs. Jared Goff will be able to learn a lot quicker when his team is winning games instead of losing them, but this doesn’t mean that Prescott won’t be a great
In the Conference Championship against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the game, Brady went down with an injury, but luckily Bledsoe finished the game out and won. The Patriots were heading into the Super Bowl as huge underdogs expecting to get crushed by the St. Louis Rams in the “Greatest Show on Turf.” Brady got the starting job for the Super Bowl and led the Pats to a seventeen to three lead at the half. The Rams came back in the 2nd half and tied it at seventeen to seventeen with less than two minutes remaining most people thought that the Pats should run the clock out and go to overtime, but instead “Tom Terrific,” and the Patriots drove down the field in spectacular fashion to get into field goal range. Bam! Tom Brady the 199th pick who became the seventh string quarterback was now the youngest QB to win a Super
…"more probable than not" that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady knew of rule-breaking… (Smith) Which was going to result in a one million dollar fine to the New England Patriates and a four week suspension for quarterback Tom Brady. In the four game suspension Brady is to go without pay, (which is pocket change for him.) Yee released a statement Monday saying, "The discipline is ridiculous and has no legitimate basis. In my opinion, this outcome was pre-determined; there was no fairness in the Wells investigation whatsoever. There is no evidence that Tom directed footballs be set at pressures below the allowable limits." (Yee) A statement from Brady’s agent who is very upset over the matter.
An athlete’s college career is something seldom used when determining the best players at each position to play professional football. To seriously distinguish between whether Manning or Brady is the best quarterback of their generation their college careers must be carefully examined. Manning, a farm-boy, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 24, 1976 ("Peyton Manning Career Biography and Statistics | SportHaven.com"). His father attended Ole Miss, where he is very well known, but Peyton, when making his decision chose to attend the hated University of Tennessee. As a Tennessee Vol, Peyton Manning, not only set records, but also posted astronomical numbers. He won his first start as quarterback, 10-9 against Washington State, and lead the team t...
In the 1770’s the British army was well known for its monetary wealth and professional well trained militia. American colonists were slowly getting more and more fed up with the inequality and taxation under British rule so they took a stand. Americans known as Rebels or Patriots fought in the Revolutionary War to gain independence from Britain. Some colonists also known as loyalists, thought that the Patriots had no chance against the professional militia so they stayed loyal to the crown. Although improbable at the start of the American Revolution, the colonists were able to defeat the British army and formally gain independence because they had great leadership from George Washington, similar goals that created high morale, and aided from
Many think Tom Brady is a great quarterback. He has great statistics and has won many Super Bowls.
Looking at the severity of injuries in the NFL in this day and age, and then looking at what the NFL does to protect players, the NFL is a business. Everything is politics. It has turned into who has the best stadium rather than who has the best players. The NFL is all about who has the best fans, not who has the best coach. The better fans you have, the more money you make, but the better coach you get, the more money you have to pay him. Growing up as a fan of the NFL, it saddens me to see the decline of the sport I love so much, but it is nearly inevitable. Soon enough, everyone in the NFL will be injured, and football will be over. The way things are going, players are dropping faster than we are gaining them. We only draft new players into the league once a...
NFL teams are practicing lightly so far this year, training camp is multiple weeks away, and the first preseason game isn't going to be played for months. The new defense has not been completely installed yet and neither has the new offense. We do not know whether the special teams unit will be as effective as it has been the past several seasons because Chip Kelly's practice schedule is no longer in place to provide extra reps and the overall depth chart isn't even being considered at this point because players are currently sporting shorts and t-shirts on the field.
They don’t call Peyton Manning the “Sheriff” for nothing. Peyton Manning also has the name “General” because he runs the show. The team he is playing against better have a good defense or Peyton will destroy them. When Peyton lines up to the line of scrimmage, he immediately finds the weakness. Most people agree that Manning is the player that the next generation of quarterbacks will be compared to.
Revolutions are usually described as “radical” events. A “radical” event is defined as one that greatly changes the political, cultural, social, and/or economic nature of a society. I believe that the American Revolution was a radical event that dramatically changed our society. There were many impacts to the changes such as slavery, primogeniture, the Articles of Confederation, republican motherhood, and government. This was the time in life, that we as America gained our independence from Britain. The American Revolution is what shaped our world to become what it is today.
Many students all across America stand and salute to the flag every morning and repeat these words, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, To the republic for which it stands, one nation, Under God, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” There are controversy behind these words of historical allegiance, and that is why many people are refusing to stand for the pledge. This nation was founded upon freedom and liberties, and with those liberties comes with the freedom to choose your religion. The words “Under God”
The first amendment is the cornerstone of our American society founded years ago by our forefathers. Without the first amendment many ideas, beliefs, and groups could not exist today. The first amendment guaranteed the people of the United States the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and freedom of petition. Although the first amendment guarantees us, Americans the freedom of speech, we cannot use it to cause others harm. This amendment has helped shaped Americans into what we are today, because of our right to assemble, speak freely, and worship as we please.
Week 3 features a pivotal Thursday Night Football game between bitter NFC East rivals the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants. It’s been a strange year in the NFC East, the Cowboys have had a plethora of injury issues, Chip Kelly’s offense has been stagnant and the Giants haven’t played an ounce of defense. Washington has been one of the surprising teams in the league and is looking to climb back to the top of their division.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
