It may come as a surprise that red-light cameras located at busy intersections has been a controversial issue for many drivers. Many people believe that they serve little or no purpose however, they fail to realize that these cameras provide positive outcomes and should be appreciated. Red-light cameras at busy intersections have been proven to; save peoples lives by reduced crash rates, save people money, help the community with the funds made, force impatient drivers to slow down, and overall improves safety for everyone. These red-light camera 's are essential for reducing car accidents in this fast driving world we live in. During the year 2011, approximately 2 people died every day in the United States from crashes involving people running red lights (ATSOL). It has been proven that a significantly less amount of people died from red-light crashes at sites that have these cameras installed. How can red-light cameras be considered negative when they have been shown to save …show more content…
Drivers who step on the gas and drive faster in order to not miss a light, act impatiently by failing to wait five minutes for the next one end up with that poor behavior as a habit. When a driver gets a violation for “barely” running a red light, that will, in essence, make a dent in that negative driving behavior due to the fact that most drivers are aware that it makes his/her car insurance go up and the ticket itself isn 't cheap. They teach in driving education that, “A yellow signal light warns you that the red signal is about to appear. When you see the yellow light, you should stop, if you can do so safely. If you can 't stop, look out for vehicles that may enter the intersection when the light changes” (“Traffic
A simple Google search will turn up hundreds of studies based on the effectiveness of emergency lighting on the road. Obviously, this wealth of information is too vast to summarize in one article; however, there is one study that sticks out when discussing whether red or blue emergency vehicle lights are easier to see on the road. In this article, we will go over a study released by Lt. James D. Wells Jr. on behalf of the Florida Highway Patrol. This study was released in 2004 and concentrates mainly on emergency lighting configurations and the effectiveness of these lights in helping to reduce collisions on the road and keeping officers and emergency first responders safer on the road. Who Should Understand the 2004 Florida Highway Patrol Emergency Lighting Configuration?
Just this past summer, one of my good friends was driving through Harrisonburg on his way home from work, when he noticed the one thing all drivers dread, flashing blue lights closing in on him fast. While pulling to the side of the road, he realized there was not one, but two police cars behind him. He knew he had only been going five miles per hour over the speed limit, so he was worried as to why two police cars had just pulled him over. After sitting in fear behind his wheel for several minutes, two cops walked to his car and informed him that he was getting a speeding ticket.
There are approximately 5,400 deaths per year that are linked to distracted driving, and thousands more were injured. (U.S. Department of Labor). Those fatalities are our neighbors, close friends, and even family. How can we prevent this from being so prominent? How can we make the roads a safe place to be again? These questions have many different answers, but many prove to be un-effective. I believe that the best and only way to resolve this issue is to implement tougher laws on cell-phone use in vehicles, and educate our youth to the best of our abilities on the dangers of distracted driving.
In the 21st century, our nation is facing a major issue, causing teenagers to lose their lives at the hand of the wheel due to inexperienced driving. “Teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to be involved in an automobile crash,” and statistics show. Automobile accidents are the number one cause of teen deaths. Driving regulations are in high need to be changed in order for teenagers to gain more experience with driving before taking the driving test, which could help save countless adolescence’s lives.
Rahim Benekohal, a traffic camera expert and engineering professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Schofer stated, “ It looks to me like someone intervened, and as a result of that intervention there was a dramatic increase in the number of tickets.” Dr Benekohal added, “Perhaps people should get their money back.” Stand alone, these sources are credible and reliable. Within this article there are also sources that seem less credible, and therefore less reliable. In multiple instances a team of “experts” are credited to certain allegations or findings. For example, “The experts said the deviations identified by the Tribune are not supposed to happen in an automated enforcement system and should have set off warning flares from city hall to the Phoenix headquarters of the city’s longtime camera vendor, Redflex Traffic Systems Inc.” Although this claim could very well be truthful, it comes from a vague and seemingly nameless source which in turn hurts the
The combination of driving an automobile after drinking a significant amount of alcohol has been recognized as a serious problem since the motor car was invented in the 1880s. By 1910, the law in the United States had already codified drunk driving as a misdemeanor offence. Prohibitionists used the danger created by mixing alcohol and driving as a key point in their argument in favor of the eighteenth amendment, as a result of which the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol was banned between 1920 and 1933. Apparently lessons were not learned and many decades later drunk driving has been called one of the most serious problems confronting America today” (Kinkade). This should not be a problem for any country as individuals should be able to control their drinking behavior.
Whether it is a text massage from love one or a bite of a sandwich, it is not so important than a human life. Distracted driving is an epidemic, so more tough laws should be implemented. The law for distracted driving should be tough just like a driving under influence. Distracting driving is a killer on the road, it should be banned because, it is the number one killer of the U.S. teenager in the road, not only the teenager in the road, but also cause a collision which is often fatal, and some incident were driver or one who involve on an accident became disable. Distraction is an involvement of driver where his or hers eye or mind are engage and performing on other things rather than driving, such as while talking on
Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations in which anyone can be or be placed. Drinking and driving is a serious offence that can cause someone to be physically harm or even killed. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but you are also risking the lives of passengers in the car as well as any other car and occupants sharing the road with you. Many people believe that increasing fines for drunk driving offenders will play a compelling role in cutting down the occurrences of driving under the influence. However, while harsher DUI laws will look effective on paper, they will not make a significant step in the fight against drunk driving. Although there is a law enforced for drinking and driving in the
Speed limit signs are posted on every road in this country, and 80% of car crashes in the US involve a lack of adherence to the speed limit, but most drivers, teens included, don’t find them to be important. More often than not, speed limits are seen as “guidelines” rather than rules. This mistake, although common, can mean the difference between life and death.
It has been found that most traffic-camera violations occurred within the the first second after the light turned red (Glenn Reynolds). Every situation is not the same though, one car might have ran the red light because they wouldn’t have been able to slow down in time without slamming on their brakes. Another reason could have been that if they would have slammed on there brakes the person behind them would have rear-ended them. If and actual police officer would have been there to witness the traffic violation, he would have been able to asses the situation and judge it accordingly. These red light cameras are very similar to the telescreens in 1984.
Teenagers are getting back on the roads and behind the wheel meaning the is a higher risk of accidents. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in 15-to 20-year olds. Automakers are creating ways to make their automobiles safer in order to reduce these deaths. Teenage drivers are inexperienced and need the extra protection to keep them safe if an incident was to occur. Automobile safety features are necessary for the teenage driver to stay protected and alert.
There is a massive amount of car accidents that occur every day, that consequently become fatal. In many cases, the driver and the passengers do not have on a seat belt to prevent them from being thrown out of the car or colliding with another car, causing them to be thrown against the dashboard or some other tragic accident. Some people may think, “Wearing a seatbelt isn’t cool”, “I’m only going down the street” or sometimes just irresponsibly forget to put on their seatbelt when they are inside of a vehicle. You may think that wearing a seatbelt is not trendy and you are only making a quick trip going down the street to the corner store, however, you cannot control others actions on the road anything can happen in the blink of an eye.
First off, it can save lives. Interestingly, in the United States in the year 2012 alone, there was 133,000 people were injured due to motorists running red lights. Due to this there were more than 680 people that lost their lives by the cause of such accidents. Furthering this argument, running stop lights is against the law. When breaking any law there is punishment. Why should this be any different? It should not. No matter the person, when this law is broken they need to lose their right of privacy. Therefore, everyone has the right but when they break the law, they lose their personal right. It should now be clearly visible why cameras on stop lights are
“The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status, or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we all believe that we are above-average drivers” -Dave Barry, comedian. The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
By having every stoplight work, it will signal drivers to have the most safe was to drive and avoid damage to a car. If a stop light went out, for example during a natural disaster like a hurricane, wrecks could come to an all time high, but as long as they work, the better life
