Tents are pitched and pockets are full. It is day before the big box store opens, and dozens of people are lined up in anticipation of the sales. The cold air circulates through the line, and those waiting get in touch with loved ones back home celebrating Thanksgiving. Although they may only be a few minutes from home, they realize that these sales are only once a year, and besides we should be thankful all year. With some patience and excuses those who go early enough are able to receive a respectable discount, but it does not come without sacrifice. Giving Tuesday is a way of resisting the temptations of a consumeristic world while refocusing ourselves to the selfless attitude needed for the holiday season. Although the day is in its fourth year, Eastern Christian began to recognize it last year at all three campuses. One of the individuals instrumental in the event is Director of Marketing and Enrollment Management Rudi Gesch. “In our culture, Black Friday has become more and more of a thing each year, also, Cyber Monday has increased over the past 3-4 years with key deals online. Small business Saturday has also became more …show more content…
popular and now #givingtuesday is in its fourth year. I think it is a really healthy response to the over consumerism everything else in the Christmas season is focused on. Since giving is the opposite of getting, a national day of giving is a trend Eastern Christian got involved in because we are an organization that always needs resources,” explained Mr. Gesch. Giving Tuesday is a day designed to further the gracious spirit found in Thanksgiving and refocus our minds going into the rest of the holiday season. The tuesday before Thanksgiving, Mr.
Visbeen, Mr. Belanious, Mr. Gesch, and Mr. Dykhouse stood in front of the entrances to the three campuses with a big sign to greet and inform everyone of the coming event. The sign said #givingtuesday is coming. To continue the advertising and encourage participation, they also stood outside the day before with a sign saying #givingtuesday is tomorrow. The day of the event, they stood outside with a sign saying #givingtuesday is today. The purpose of the signs was to make people aware whereas most of the giving and advertising took place online through a website and social media. To make it easy to operate, a separate website was set up for those who wished to give online. With it being online, it was also accesible to share it on social media and encourage friends to take part as
well. “All of us loves to stand outside to greet and everyone we talked to was very friendly. If nothing else, it was a good way to start the day and make people feel welcomed,” acknowledged Mr. Gesch. In contrast to the $10,487 raised in its first year, this year EC raised $10,643 in the single day fundraiser. The giving ranged from the five dollar minimum all the way to the $5,000, which was offered by a group of 3-4 people. To help reach the goal and improve the incentive to give, the group only pledged to make the donation if the rest of the EC family was able to raise $5,000. The community came together in support, and the match donation was granted. The money received from the one-day event supports the annual fund. As one of the EC’s biggest programs, it is designed to bring forth the general mission of the school. The fund impacts everything from technology and teachers to extracurriculars and the facilities to insure excellence in all areas. Additionally, the fund allows the school to offer tuition at 80% of the full cost to make Christian education accessible to a broader population. The school seeks to participate in this event annually, but do not plan to make any major additions. “We hope to increase our donor base and have the full community support the school. Giving starts at five dollars to enable individuals be involved and help them realize their donations are significant regardless of their socioeconomic status. Some students even donated their personal money which was amazing to see,” reflected Mr. Gesch.

It is seen in everything from the hoarding of material objects to the destruction of friendships, both of which are popular themes when regarding the topic of Black Friday shopping. Black Friday has become Black Thursday, a trend which has only shown up within the last decade. The great American holiday that is Thanksgiving is celebrated because of our gratefulness toward all that we have, a holiday that is meant to be spent gathered around a table of our loved ones. However, the retail holiday that consumes the day afterward has begun to overflow into our gatherings, and it is due to the greed of the American people. Were it not for the market’s demand for earlier sales, stores would not open their sales on Thursday nights. Everyone would simply wait until early the next morning to start off on their shopping extravaganzas, and the sales themselves would likely be far less violent as
While only a small percentage of the entire workforce was able to participate in the event, its intention was to provide employees with something to strive toward. It was also rejuvenating for those given the opportunity to attend. The event was inspiring and left you with the feeling that you work for a great company and they do care about you; so much so that they are willing to spend a lot of money and provide you with a wonderful experience . The event also focused heavily on the driving force of the company: the students and helping them to improve and change their lives. Employees returned to work feeling inspired and ready to do just that. The event provided the company with an opportunity to invest in their employees, reward them, and make them feel
What a week! From Trick or Treat Street to One Homeless Night, our week was fairly successful. As a council, we should be proud of the work we have put in and results we have gotten out. From the 175+ kids who came through our doors on Monday night to the 49 successful blood donations to the $650 worth of products we raised, organized and donated to Synergy as apart of One Homeless Night. While our hard work has paid off up to now, we still have a lot to accomplish to continue making this a successful year. This next week is a vital part of that success as we take on week one of food drive and the Veterans Day breakfast and assembly.
I woke up one morning in the need of some groceries because I ran out of eggs to make breakfast. I also realized that I needed ink cartridges, glue for a project, and a video game that I wanted; materials that normal grocery stores wouldn’t sell. Wal-Mart is the typical superstore where you can get almost anything. So I figured what better place to get all of these items at a good price than to go to Wal-Mart.
Chain stores, such as K-Mart and Wal-Mart swing their doors wide for all deal seekers at around 6 a.m. Individuals will wake up earlier than necessary, drive to these stores, and camp out prior to the stores opening, if only just to ensure they get the best spot in line. Also near this time, various online deals begin. This means before many people wake up on Thanksgiving morning, sales have already started both in store and online. By this standard, the day’s workers have to get to the store hours before it opens to prepare the store for the surplus of people and the chaos that will soon enfold. People should be getting rest or preparing food for their lunches or dinners, but instead they are shopping or working. Retailers place priority on shopping from the moment people wake up until they go to sleep. There is never an emphasis on family throughout the entire day in these chain stores. The madness occurs throughout the entirety of both days, causing lack of family time in both days of the holiday for patrons and
This is a good question. Walmart started as a small five and dime in the city of Bentonville, Arkansas by a man named Sam Walton. After a great success Sam and his wife Helen moved to Rogers, Arkansas where he opened his very first Walmart. He had some retailing experience after his time in the war and he chose Bentonville for the hunting season and because his wife wanted to live in a small town. His ideas of not pocketing extra cash from manufacturers, but rather giving deals to customers and trying to make profit off of how much he sold, changed the way retailers make money in America. Sam had a cheap mindset, not only for his customers, but for himself. Even when he became the richest man in America he continued to get his hair done for
Thanksgiving is a time to get together with your family and have a nice dinner. Then you play games, catch up, and watch movies. Thanksgiving is the time to be grateful for what you have. But wait; now you had to start dinner earlier and cut out catching up with your family. Now it’s time to get ready to go shopping for those deals you just can’t beat. Forget about being thankful for what you have; now it’s time to buy all the things you don’t have. Has Thanksgiving been taking over by Black Friday, or should we now be calling it Black Thursday? Stores should only be able to open after 12 am on Black Friday.
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.

Overcoming adversity is imperative. In fact, you can 't have the happiness and success you want unless you have adversity in your life and overcome it. It is essential for progressing into who you want to be. It shows you what you are made of. It teaches you more about yourself, how to approach what you want, and how to maintain the success that you have. Without it, you wouldn 't know how far you could go or how capable you are because you wouldn 't have anything to push you or compare to.
First and foremost, to be devoted to the giving, one must willingly sacrifice their time. This can be seen in our story when Della took a considerable amount of time to search high and low for the ideal present for Jim. “Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashed metaphor. She was ransacking the stores for Jim’s present.” (Henry pg. 526) Della hadn’t paid attention to the face of a clock as she hunted for the gift. Instead, she was willing to take however long was needed, giving up precious time that cannot be taken back. Even so, in the world today many people voluntarily give up their time to go on rescue missions in the rubble of a natural disaster, to work at a hospital gift shop, to feed homeless people at a shelter, and even to read to children at schools. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 64.5 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.9 billion hours in the year 2013. The estimated value of this volunteer service is nearly $175 billion, based on the Independent Sector's estimate of the average value of a volunteer hour. People volunteer knowing tha...
This week, I went to glass etching. While I was there I designed my own glass. What you had to do is pick a glass, then fill them up with any sticker you wanted to put on it, then you had to put a special material on the design, and then they put the glass ware in a special water and then you were able to take it home. Glass etching was an exciting event to go to because you could put anything that you wanted and it was free. The people that were there teaching us were contacted by Student Government Association (SGA) to put this event for us. SGA is a campaign that organizes activities and organizations for the campus. The person who was in charge of this event was Jennifer Skinner and the student government. She was the advisor for this event.
Around Christmas time all people have a different way we like to go about shopping. Some like to stay in the comfort of their own home. While others like to save every little penny they can and some shoppers like to get in and out of the store as fast as possible. There are three types of holiday shoppers, the online shoppers, the bargain shoppers, and last but not least the man on a mission.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
