I was just looking over the new requirement sheet for juniors and realized that I have a scheduling conflict for the event on November 1 from 5-7 since I have class until 5:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Should I just come to that event once I get out of my class and attend the last hour? Also would you like me to bring in a copy of my requirement sheet with this event highlighted and my schedule so you have documentation for why I will be late to this event?
It was a shock. The pediatric psychiatrist diagnosed me with a novel maladaptive behavior syndrome known as attention deficit disorder (ADD). My condition has notably hindered my ability to concentrate, organize, and execute both in the classroom and within social spheres. However, I have tried to meet the challenges posed by this mysterious syndrome through a number of approaches. Although they have been arduous, I have improved my control over the consequences of this disorder.
I am determined to have a perfect attendance when it comes to my college classes. Keeping a balanced attendance allows me to be up to date with assignments and set an excellent example of myself. Participating in class activities like writing on the board or reading aloud examples, was not my one of my biggest strong suits. Although I spoke out in my assigned groups, which brought a lot more attention to myself, I did not openly speak out in front of the whole class and volunteer myself. This is a certain area that I need to improve on. Although I did not speak out as openly as I should, I always came fully prepared. Being prepared and organized helped keep everything I needed together so I could perform at my fullest potential. In addition, I made sure to create reminders on my phone notifying what I would need, when to work on a certain assignment for the class, and especially for my conferences with Dr. Kennedy (refer to page 3). For my future classes, I will continue to have perfect attendance, be organized, and practice my writing. In time, I will become better at speaking out in
Life is a journey paved with colorful experiences. Mine have lead me on a path to helping others. Continuing my education in a subject that I find fascinating has brought me incredible fulfilment. My goal is to complete The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program.
Social workers understand how diversity can characterize and mold someone’s experience and how it’s critical to the formation of one’s identity. The elements of diversity are acknowledged as the crossroad of various components which include; age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. Social workers appreciate that, someone’s life experiences may include ill-treatment, poverty, marginalization, and alienation as well as privilege, power, and acclaim as consequences of differences.
We each come from a distinct background and have had many different life experiences; sharing our professional goals on learning allows us to share where we come from with each other and what we wish to become, which in turn enables us to realize that where there are multiple experiences, there are multiple points of view, and multiple destination. At the same time, we are deeply influenced by our cultural heritage and the environment that surrounds us, which also directs our path; we need to connect ourselves with the world around us in order to understand our place in that world, to learn how and what we can offer to help others, and to learn that we are not alone.

A good curator has the potential to shape a person’s approach to art and culture. In 2011, Andrew Bolton’s stunning presentation of fashion as art, in ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ opened my eyes to the work of a designer that would become the backbone to the majority of my undergraduate study. Aged 18, I traveled to New York where I visited the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Four years later, when ‘Savage Beauty’ was showing once again - this time at the V&A, curated by Claire Wilcox - I wrote my dissertation on the complex relationship between art and fashion through a detailed analysis of the exhibition which gave me my biggest passion.
Healthcare administration is a field that is often overlooked, but is essentially the beating heart of any healthcare organization. With more and more hospital, and clinics, and other healthcare organizations popping up everywhere there is a need for people like me to manage the day-to-day operations. I am choosing to apply to this program because I want to study how the U.S. healthcare system operates. I want to learn the essential skills of operating a healthcare facility such as managing a budget, reducing healthcare costs, analyzing the efficiency of an organization and proposing ways to improve it. This program is going to give me the necessary education and skills so I can carry out my goal of being a healthcare administrator.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
I can still remember those words, ‘When you are a clinician, you are saving a life, but when you are a public health personnel, you are saving thousands of lives at a time’, delivered by my professor in the orientation class of undergraduate Community Medicine course. That introductory speech was so motivating that I contemplated for a while, should I be in the ‘thousands life saver’ group? Though inspiring, that speech alone was not sufficient to grow my interest in public health. Day by day I felt the importance of public health while dealing with various patients as a clinician.
As an Industrial Engineer with more than 15 years of work experience, I choose Supply Chain Management (SCM) because I believe that logistics is the most dynamic, vibrant, challenging, technology driven area, and the future of any big national and international companies. It will give me the opportunity to know behind the scene of improving the companies’ performance by using SCM tools. If I work in this field, I can get my answers and a chance to work in the market of raw material, purchasing, production, distribution, logistics, and final goods. After finishing two semesters in the College of Business at University of Houston Downtown (UHD), I am really passionate about it and want to gain my knowledge in the logistics sector, learn new techniques and skills, and seek new opportunities.
Pursuing pharmacy as a profession derives deeply from my self-interest in studying pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. While attending a seminar held at the University of Minnesota by Dr. James R. Fuch, I witness the importance of drug kinetics, bioavailability, toxicity and how drugs are administered. It is then that ignited my curiosity into wanting to learn more about applying chemistry into health care and research. After completing a Drug and Alcohol Pharmacology course and attending various medicinal pharmaceutical chemistry seminars, I was self convinced that becoming a clinical research pharmacist is the right career path. While studying or even registering for a class presents a challenge to some college students, the greatest obstacle remains, going to class. Attending college is supposed to signify a new found freedom to make many important choices regarding education without high school mandatory attendance policies. However, students everywhere are coming to the staggering realization that college is not too different from high school. Teachers still take class roll and students are still expected to be at every class on time. What next, hall monitors in the hall? The time has come for action to be taken. Colleges must abolish mandatory student attendance policies for several reasons to be further discussed.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree.
Two years ago, I was writing my letter of intent for my application to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Healthcare Administration revealing my failures, and most significantly, that I lost my passion and didn’t know where to start. I also conceded that I was relatively unaware of the field of Public Administration (PA). Little did I know, examining PA theories would enable me to connect the final dots in the big picture of my life, where I came from, who I’d come to be, what choices I’d made, the relationships I nurtured, and my dreams and desires for the future. Although confidence came slowly and awkwardly, I discovered my desire to contribute to the advancement of public health policies. I am writing to express my interest in continuing to the Doctoral program in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). I am absolutely interested in the commitment to the advancement of knowledge, and confident my experience in higher education and academic research will contribute to my successful completion of the Ph.D. program, in the specialization area of public policy.
