Job shadowing is very vital to knowing what career field you are interested in. You can learn valuable information and even meet important people. It's hard choosing a career field and going and job shadowing is extremely helpful in the decision-making. In my experience job shadowing, I gained a great deal of respect for the job. I job shadowed a middle school teacher about a month ago. I went one day with my best friend Jalavon to our old middle school. My host was Mrs. Hurd, previously known to me as Ms. Austin. She is a 6th grade ELA teacher and that's new as well because when she taught me, she was a math teacher. A typical day for Mrs. Hurd would include making copies, grading papers, and caring for the students, among much more.
Mrs. Hurd showed me how much truly goes into teaching. There are para pros that work for the school and they help teachers when they are in need. They handle menial tasks for teachers. A typical work environment is the classroom and even the home. I observed that a class is much different when you're observing instead of being the student. You actually get to see the ins and outs of what goes into teaching. I'm honestly not interested in taking up this career. Even with that realization, the experience was still very valuable. The most meaningful part to me was the questionnaire. Some real information was given out during this time. Things like all the extra hours put in besides the school day. This talk undoubtedly revealed how much you have to enjoy your career. It's a genuine care and want to teach kids. You need a bachelors degree and then to maintain teaching license, you must continue through graduate school. I learned a plethora of information from my job shadowing experience. I gained tons more respect and knowledge. I believe it helped that I personally knew the teacher. She was able to give me the real 100% truth of how teaching is. I appreciated all the inside information I got. It helped me legitimately realize what I want to do in my life. Overall, I decided not to pursue teaching, but instead do something more to my liking.
During my first few weeks, I met a student named Joseph. He towered over me at 6-foot-4 and weighing 300 pounds. At first, I didn't know what to expect from him.I was surprised to learn he had failed the 9th grade twice and with this being his third try he was in the same grade as his younger brother, Jason. Joe and I became friends fast. I was treated differently because of my skin color but Joe did not judge me. Through students chit-chatter, I learned Joe was very popular and on the football team but had unexpectedly quit his first year. Joe struggled with his classes especially in English and Mathematics. One day in English, another kid was struggling to read a passage aloud, the classroom was filled with snickers and the teacher made the poor kid continue. After class, Joe comforted the kid and made him smile. That was his talent,, he had the ability to make people feel better.
I selected to job shadow my mom actually because I couldn’t find anyone to shadow in the career that I wanted, so my only other choice was to do my mom. I wasn’t really too interested in doing that job at first, but that’s what I needed to do. I spent my day watching and helping my mom checking out stock systems and how it works. I was also able to use the office equipment. I wore nice black pants with a nice sweater. We left the building for lunch, and went somewhere else to eat, like my mom does a lot of the time. During the interview, I asked her the questions, and she answered, explaining as she went along, and I was not able to catch it all. So I learned a whole lot about the job by doing the interview. I left at about 2:00 to 3:00 (I am not too sure exactly when) because my mom had some important work she needed to do, that I really couldn’t help with. My favorite experience that day was actually finding out how stocks work, saving money, and information like that.

She is also bothered of the fact that the students didn’t seem to like her, and that she is having problems disciplining her students. Stansbury and Zimmerman (2000) suggests that to make life less stressful for new teachers like Miss Hiller, the principal may reduce the number of students in a beginning teacher’s classrooms, refrain from assigning them the most challenging students, and minimize their extracurricular and committee assignments.

Experiences in job shadowing this semester also taught me more about being a kind and compassionate teacher. I had the opportunity to shadow Katie Ondrejko and she is the kind of teacher that is very passionate about her job and her students. When I was in her classroom, I could see how much her students meant to her and how much she meant to them. Almost every student in the classroom came up and hugged her and then Katie went on to ask about how their weekend was and how their family was doing. She takes the time to truly get to know not just the students, but know their lives too. I believe you have to be very passionate about teaching to make this kind of effort. It was fun seeing you in elementary but I think we started getting to know one another better in middle school. Mr. Sisil was such a great teacher. It was always fun to be in his class, and he always knew how to make each student smile. I remember always being amazed by how many notes you knew and how pretty and loud your sound was all the way back since middle school.

In the three years I have known her, Mrs. Hackett has, without fail, always been doing something. I have been currently working at the Glen Ridge Public Library since June 2016. I have worked in the children’s room many times and have been around the children that come in everyday after school. They can see me as a role model because they can see how hard-working I can be and dedicated I am to the job. Once you get into the high school many students start to get jobs and by watching students like me can be a good lesson on how to during that job.
...f shadowing opportunities allowed me to expand my exposure of the company. As I shadowed I tried to establish common ground between myself and the person I was shadowing. For instance the Director of Development is engaged to a teacher and my sister just earned her degree in the same field. We talked about teaching for a little bit and helped establish a baseline for future contact. Establishing this relationship helped me when I went in and interviewed for my summer internship and was finally offered the position.

Through my local primary school I have been able to shadow a teacher of a mixed class of year one and year two pupils for two days. I was able to help the children with reading one-on-one, which I really enjoyed. I was patient and understanding while listening to the children read, and helped them with words they found difficult. I also took part in a maths lesson where the children were weighing different classroom objects. I enjoyed having the responsibility of supervising the children while learning, and interacting with different children. I had the responsibility of a group of children at playtime, in which I was required to keep the children entertained and maintain discipline. This experience gave me an insight into the running of a classroom, and reinforced my desire to teach.
