Personal Narrative: My New Band Teacher

At the 7th grade open house I first met Mr. Moore. He was not what I expected. My mom had told me about the new band teacher and how he was going to be really cool. So, my 7th grade self thought I was going to meet a young, cool dude. So when I saw Mr. Moore I was shocked. This guy looked around the same age as my dad and had a beard! But I was yet to find out how great of a teacher he was. Band had yet to captivate me, although I had been in it one year already. Mr. Moore helped open the gates for me to band and show me what I could do.

Also, the summer before my sophomore year I had surgery on my chest. I was not able to do physical activity for a month and missed band camp. When I returned I faced the obstacle of learning the entire show as quickly as possible. Mr. Moore was worried about me but knew that I could learn the show quickly. He pushed me to improve and help the band. One great property for a band teacher is they do not look to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy all the time. Mr. Moore definitely embodies this. Band has provided great opportunities for me and many were made available with the help of Mr. Moore. I remember when I was in 8th grade band. Mr. Moore told the top 5 students who they were. He also said that the top two students were invited to be in the Middle school district honor band. I was the third. But, later that week I learned that one of the students would not be able to attend, so I was able to go. Later that school year Mr. Moore told me about the High School All-Conference band. I was confused, “Don’t highschoolers only tryout for that?” I thought. Mr. Moore told me that 8th graders were allowed to try out. I thought that it
