Most people search their whole lives to find out who they are. I am not one of those people. My names Maraya, and since second-grade I have had my whole life planned out. Now, I am a senior at Udall High School and still chasing the imagined idea of my second-grade self, and finalized my fifth-grade year, to become a professional glassblower. I have already learned some skills in this field and want to expand my knowledge by attending college. Along my journey of attending high school, I have participated in multiple things including dance, art classes, and track. One extracurricular activity that I am very passionate about would be the FFA. FFA has taught me so many things and it has brought me so many places. I 've learned how to be a great speaker from different events my advisor has challenged me to do. Public speaking has taken me so many places and I have attributed most of my success to FFA. When I was a freshmen I competed and received gold in the creed speaking competition. As a sophomore, I tried extemporaneous speaking and received a gold for that as well. As a junior I really wanted to challenge myself so I took up agricultural sales as my winter career development experience. I ended up being recognized as the state runner up individual agriculture salesman as well as the 15th best agricultural sales man in the nation. Since the age of two, I have been dancing. I have been involved in lyrical and classical ballet, contemporary, pointe, hiphop, jazz and tap. When I turned 6 I also took up gymnastics. Through middle school I danced, and did gymanstics as well as softball and soccer. I loved these sports but when high school hit, I had to pick one and I chose cheerleading. I chose this sport because it was not only a extraordinary team athletically but they were extremely involved with the community. We had fundraisers for less fortunate children multiple times and even got to interact with them every winter. The leadership role on the cheer team taught me so much, we lead the entire student body to have school spirit and respect at the football games every friday night. My senior year I decided to switch back to dance and tried out for my high school dance team, and made it! It has been such a blessing to me by showing me even more leadership and how to serve others at our school and in the community.
I signed up for classes such as AP Biology, Medical Microbiology, and Physics in order to strengthen the scientific backbone I know I will need for a career in this area. I even joined Health Occupation Students of America, or HOSA, and started looking more into specific areas of study that would give me a good background for the field. My colorguard instructor introduced me to kinesiology, or the study of human movement, and I started applying the knowledge I gained from what I researched to my performance and personal recoveries from injuries I had from dancing. Identity-“Ones personal qualities.”Identiy is something only he or she can fully define. My uncle says I am affectionate,cheerful, and calm. My grandmother sees me as slim, pretty and sweet. My dad described me as perky, cheerful and happy, my mom says beautiful, gentle, and self-conscious. These adjectives describe me accurately, yet they are only abstract versions of me. Adjectives cannot begin to describe me and I aknowlege these descriptions for what they are, a condensed translation from my outward self to the world. It is impossible for anyone to understand me completely because nobody has experienced the things I have. My mother has never cherished a raggedy doll named Katie and my father never spent hours upon hours making collages and scrap books for his future children. My uncle never hid in the back of a pick-up-truck and traveled four hours to New York and my grandmother has never walked hours in the rain looking for the Queen of England. My identity is something only I can define.
Freshman year I was involved in three athletic sports and was also in the BETA club. On top of the sports I knew that school comes first and was invited to take honors class after I passed the placement tests. I spent many nights coming home from games and practices to stay up for hours working on projects, essays, and studying. I believe that hard work is what makes not only a person, but a community better. I continued to be involved in school activities through my senior year. I am a member of Student Government Association, Health Occupation Students of America, and play varsity volleyball with numerous newspaper appearances. Continuing to push one’s self allows the person to grow; which was my thought when I made the decision to take Advanced Placement classes that were provided by my school. I am currently enrolled and passing in all three of my AP classes.
Throughout my high school career I have maintained an above perfect grade point average, joined multiple extra curricular activities, and volunteered for several years. Having this diverse pool of activities has made me a leader, a better student, a well rounded person, and has also helped me develop long lasting friendships.
Since I am from such a small school, as a leader, I have been in many different activities and sports. When I go to college, I would like continue this in college. In such a small school, we are in as many activities that we can handle along with upper class and concurrent and PSEO courses. In college, I would love to be involved in intermural volleyball and basketball, since I played them in high school. I also would like to do fitness
I am not one to be content with only one interest or hobby. For instance; in the span of one day, I may attend a FCA meeting, teach my choreography to fellow students, attend wrestling practice as a manager, spend time with my sister after completing hours of homework, set out to off-season volleyball practice, and then head back home to plan for the next day. I am passionate about singing and dancing, as well as using it as a source of artistic expression of faith; which I plan to use in pursuing my future. My wide range of interest and hobbies helps assure that I am a well-rounded fortunate individual.
As you grow up you learn the language which is a system of arbitrary signs and symbols used to communicate (pg. 77). The language of any culture can define a person, but ultimately your name can define much more than what a language can. With our verbal communication, the way in which we use the words in a language to generate meaning (pg. 77), we can generate a meaning with our names and with that meaning we can potentially define who we are. As I think of my whole name, “Elisa Monique Hernandez”, I personally enjoy the way it flows, so when asking do I like my name, I do because it is the name I was given and the name I will keep forever, unless I get married.
First, thanks to my numerous extracurricular and volunteer activities, I have gained experience in a variety of fields such as healthcare, government welfare, music, and journalism. In addition, these activities have allowed me to develop skills such as leadership and resilience.
All of these activities also aided me in giving back to my school, which is something I am very passionate about. In college, I am the PR chair and member of the sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma. In my junior year of high school i did a scholarship program called Jr. miss where we practiced for about five months. We did fashion shows to raise money. We competed in events such as:talent, poise, fitness, and academics. This allowed me to explore myself and make new friends, it also helped build my self-esteem.
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go.
