When my family and I were going to New York for my first time, I was only about 6 years old but I still understood that I were about to fly over the atlantic sea, From Stockholm to New York I was so enthusiastic, Mom and Dad had told me how great the city was, I can not do anything but agree. During my stay I was introduced to several new things . But what caught my interest, believe it or not was the metropolitan museum of art, or as the yankees call it “The met”. It was from that moment that art became a big interest of mine. You are probably wondering how a 6 year old could find artwork like a monet appealing? Well to be honest I am not sure why, but the art simply inspired me. Nevertheless, after some of the classic sightseeings, including
New York City is known for its extensive collection of art museums ranging from the Metropolitan Museum of Art which is usually the most renowned to others such as the the Solomon R. Guggenheim or the Whitney Museum of American Art which are popular in their own rights. This abundance of art museums makes the city very attractive for foreign visitors. However, this abundance of choice can overwhelm even the most informed visitors who have a finite amount of time to explore what the city has to offer. Although all of the above mentioned museums have great collections of their own, the often unheralded Frick Collections might trump them all in terms of exceptional works which include some of the world's most celebrated Western artists, such as Goya, Manet, Monet, Rembrandt, and Renoir.
The first piece of art that really stuck out to me was The Promenade under the Railroad Bridge by Claude Monet. When I first saw it, I felt like the setting was something out of some type of movie. It actually reminded me of a scene from Pride and Prejudice, when Mr. Darcy was walking toward Ms. Elizabeth. The work is an oil painting and was done in 1874. I feel like this made the painting a blurred look and like the day depicted could have been windy from the way the trees and bushes seem to be leaning over to one set side. It caught my attention because it looked like some type of peaceful, relaxing escapade and that the characters in it were having a pleasant encounter.
Seeing the art in person truly made me see the beauty and captivity a painting can hold. Each gallery was filled with different American works. My favorite kind of paintings are the ones I can look at and immediately write a story in my head about what is happening, even if it not what the artist intended. As I was going through the galleries one painting in particular stuck in my mind. I was fortunate enough to experience a special exhibition called, “Audubon to Warhol.” It was composed of different works acquired from private and public collections. I was lured to the emotions that was captured by the main figure in one of the works. I was drawn not only to the beauty of the painting, but the story it shared. The painting I chose was Peeling Onions, by Lilly Martin Spencer.
Just last summer after grade 9, I went to New York City and Philadelphia. They both have amazing art museums: New York has the Museum of Metropolitan Art and Philadelphia has the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Both art museums have beautiful and alluring paintings that I love and it’s evident that these paintings are genuine works of art and that they exemplify what we define as art: something that is beautiful, intricate, bold or simple. I remember seeing the “Irises” painted by Van Gough and the full series of “Poplars” by Monet. Van Gogh emphasizes tones and shadows while Monet depicts his subjects realistically with small, fine, but visible brushstrokes. Their styles are unique and distinguishable and there is a wide range art styles to
I wonder if I should I start calling Las Vegas, Nevada home now. I’ve traveled back and forth from California to Las Vegas since I was a child. I can remember at the age of thirteen my family and I would take family weekend trips very often. By the age of seventeen I was forced to move to Vegas for 6 months right before my senior year of high school started. Since it was my last year of high school my parents decided to let me go back to California for the last three months and graduate with my friends. Since I wasn’t eighteen yet, I forced to go back to Las Vegas right the day after graduation.
Imagine yourself in a museum. You are standing in front of a masterpiece and it draws you ever close until your nose is almost touching it. When you’re too near the painting and you’re too focused, you don’t see the overall beauty of the painting itself. In fact, it becomes blurry when your eyes get too near. Life is the same way. You can’t get too focused on any one detail because your vision becomes impaired and everything else around you becomes blurry.
Identity-“Ones personal qualities.”Identiy is something only he or she can fully define. My uncle says I am affectionate, cheerful, and calm. My grandmother sees me as slim, pretty and sweet. My dad described me as perky, cheerful and happy, my mom says beautiful, gentle, and self-conscious. These adjectives describe me accurately, yet they are only abstract versions of me. Adjectives cannot begin to describe me and I aknowlege these descriptions for what they are, a condensed translation from my outward self to the world. It is impossible for anyone to understand me completely because nobody has experienced the things I have. My mother has never cherished a raggedy doll named Katie and my father never spent hours upon hours making collages and scrap books for his future children. My uncle never hid in the back of a pick-up-truck and traveled four hours to New York and my grandmother has never walked hours in the rain looking for the Queen of England. My identity is something only I can define.
I spent most of my high school career depressed and anxious about everything. I was lost alone and some days it was it was hard to get out of bed. I was happier with my friends that was only a temporary satisfaction. I found myself through Art: writing, poetry, or short stories Art help me express myself. My art screamed more than I could have ever said. Art give me the confidence in the person I convey through right. Being creative lowered my anxiety and maybe feel like I could be myself.
It was a rainy December 26th and me and my family were on the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was crowded with everyone constantly stopping to soak in as much as they could. The view of the Statue of Liberty was magnificent which led to many tourists stopping to take pictures. After almost walking half a mile we were ready to go home. The way to the exit was all the way back down and then you had to take the tunnel back to the subway. The way down was chaotic and quite dangerous.
Throughout my life, I have loved to draw. Due to my love of drawing, I decided to take a career in something that has to do with art. A few things have happened in my life that has caused me to take this path. Three people that I have interacted in some way, are the reason for my choices.
I woke up early on Saturday morning June 9th to go to The Met Cloisters. I decided to go early in the morning so that I could return home and have time to finish my revisions for other finals coming up next week. I had planned to ask a friend to drive me but after I took note of the questions, I realized it would be more beneficial to take train so that I could observe the surrounding and notice the demographic makeup while on the train. I took the E train at around 9:30am from Queens plaza to 42nd St. PA and changed to the A train. Since it was a weekend, the wait time for the trains were long. After a long ride of about 1 hour, I got off at 190 street station.
My trip to the Getty museum was filled with anticipation and an unknowing of what Iwas actually searching to write about. I went on a Friday at about eleven but the museum was still full. It took about twenty minutes to find parking, the wait in line was long, and the tram had so many people it felt even hotter then it actually was. But overall the experience was fun. I enjoyed checking out the works of art and watching the classes of elementary students learn about the history and culture in the room. On one occasion I was very surprised because a mother asked her daughter, who could not have been more than six, about a painting was which she correctly identified as Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises, which was great because I never knew about Van Gogh at her age.
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
In my short 16 years there have been many experiences I have encountered in life that shape who I am. My identity today. As time has passed experiences have come one after another for me to learn. What has shaped me influenced me in this short time period are many things the topic around this lies around my social construct. I am a lot of things, I am someone who looks as a shy, quite, smart, nice etc. person. Those simple qualities that make who I am have been influenced upon me and in general just who I am. What has shaped me present day is my family structure and my education the most to shape my identity.
I am not entirely sure on my exact field of interest although one thing I can say for certain is that I am interested in design. For a long time, I had wanted to be an architect, and that’s not to say that I do not want to be one anymore. I still love the idea of being able to design a building and figuring out the logistics to erect it. However, times have changed and the technology industry has started to boom, and my interest in art has also begun to evolve. I am also interested in becoming an animator of some sort. I know this does not sound very convincing, but I just recently had an interest in this field, so I looked for an internship dealing with graphic design. Although the internship will not be designing objects, and coding them to move, I will still see the inside scoop of making art on the computer. The reason I have taken a liking to a more
