Polluted air, endless traffic, sidewalks completely covered with trash, homeless people all around, and construction projects in the middle of the busiest streets are some of the things that define New York, the worst place to go on vacations on earth at any time of the year. I visited New York, summer of 2013. After high school graduation, my girlfriend and I decided to travel to this place to celebrate our accomplishment. The experience, unfortunately, was dreadful and disappointing. I never imagined such nightmarish place. Regardless of what time of the day it is, New York is always infested with massive amounts of people. I definitely discourage people visiting this horrendous place. The experiences expected in this place are so disappointing. …show more content…
People are discourteous and always ready to start an argument. There are no right of the ways in the traffic, and pedestrians walk wherever they please. Considering the fact that the only effective and less stressing method of transportation is taxis makes it even worse. Depending on someone else for transportation is a potential cause for frustration. Standing on the edge of the sidewalk for a long period of time, fighting against other people to obtain a cab, it’s something undesirable. Having to deal with impolite manners is another subject to consider because for a place to go on vacations, people aren’t expecting to be treated disrespectfully. We experienced many discourteous scenarios during my staying in New York. We dined in different restaurants all the time, and every single place we had food, we experienced terrible service. One of our experiences dinning in was at the Italian restaurant, we order simple entrees and bottomless beverages, which they should be served at a table in less than an hour. Our simplest meal wasn 't served at our table until an hour and half later. On top of that, the waiter was quite upset about or expectations of the place. He couldn 't understand why we were mad about our food taking so long, after all, we were on vacations he said. Meaning we had all the time of the world to wait for our food. Encountering offensive people anywhere, evokes a terrible sensation and an unsatisfactory …show more content…
Even fast food prices are considerably more expensive than other places. For example, having Chipotle in Montgomery County rounds about $8 per person, while in New York the price raises to $11 per person at the same fast food restaurant. Transportation is also another expensive factor to consider when visiting New York. Taxis, trains, parking rates, and subway tickets are subjects to consider because they are more expensive than other places. On our visit to New York with my girlfriend, we had to pay many tolls on our way to the city, all together came up to $80 only on tolls. The tolls expected to pay are plenty, and most of them are not cheaper than $2.50. It is an absurd amount of money for what to expect in New York as a vacation spot. An amusing and almost unbelievable factor is parking. New York is known for its nonsense parking rates. It’s funny to believe that some of the parking lots are in alleys in between buildings, without security cameras, or any type of security officer. These improvised parking lots owners are nothing but clowns because they have the nerve to charge up to $90 per car for a maximum of 4 hours, making it very inconvenient for visitors traveling in cars. Stores in New York are full of endless lines to pay. Most of these stores raise the prices because people are crazy shopping at “The Big Apple”, where everything is about
Hotels in New York City are very costly especially near the holiday’s. After reviewing some hotels that were near Times Square, I chose to go with a three star hotel at the rate of $184.00 a night. For a total of three nights it would cost $552.00 tax included. That cost would include a room with two double beds, television, high speed internet access, a full kitchen, and a great view of Times Square.
essence of New York and all its nuances in the form of terse observations. Whether
New Yorkers are stereotypically known as a crass and rude group, devoid of compassion. Having visited other places in the world I can frankly attest that I have never experienced apathy so widely spread throughout a populace as I have felt living in New York. The "New York attitude" isn't unique to lower class individuals who are down on their luck; it transcends class, gender, and race. It's evident in the Wall Street white collar, the ghetto rogue, the chubby mothers of three-and me. It's a compelling force. I've been trained, conditioned like one of Dr. Pavlov's dogs, to behave this way; to bark on demand, to push as I'm being shoved, to hate when hated.
New York City’s population is a little over 8.3 million people. 8.3 million people are spread out among five boroughs and each have their own set routine. Each one of those 8.3 million see New York in a different way becuase “You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it” (“City Limits” 4). Some people are like Colson Whitehead who “was born here and thus ruined for anywhere else” (“City Limits” 3). Others may have “moved here a couple years ago for a job. Maybe [they] came here for school” (“City Limits” 3). Different reasons have brought these people together. They are grouped as New Yorkers, but many times, living in New York is their only bond. With on going changes and never ending commotion, it is hard to define New York and its inhabitants in simple terms.
New Amsterdam became New York and changed hands from the Dutch to the English. But it is not only Dutch place names and styles of architecture scattered across the five boroughs and all of the Empire State that beat witness to this moment in history. The values of openness, tolerance, liberalism and engagement with the world remain the hallmarks of New York, city and state alike. They have made it one of the economic, intellectual and cultural centers of the
New York is many places in one. It is a place for everything and it is no surprise that millions of people all over the world wish and dream to travel to New York. However, New York traveling is not an easy feat. There are things you have to know to make your dream travel a reality.
Every culture left a mark of its quality on New York’s buildings that change over time: some are old, some are new, some are tall, and some are small. They might have a lot in common, but not one building is like the other. Diversity is what makes New York.
When Hudson explored the New World, he recognized that there was a commercial potential of the geography of New York City today. It was described that the “city’s natural setting was a blessing” (Atlas, 10), which tells us that New York City was a perfect place for trading and business. As a result, this could support that the place had its commercial advantages already from the first time when the city was discovered. However, as New York City was able to become the way it is after going through many different events and developments after 1609 until the twentieth century, the characteristic of the city of New York has kept
To conclude, New York City is one of the most densely inhabited metropolitan collection of cultural diversity in the world in which structures our temperament. New York City applies an imperative influence upon trade, economics, mass communication, skill, style, and education. Frequently it is known that New York City is a crucial core for global politics and has been depicted as the ethnic headquarters of the globe. New York City has been known as a melting pot of culture and as this prolong throughout towards the current day, the city has become ornate with distinct cultures. You can easily experience many aspects of different cultures by going to the different ethnic neighborhoods that exist throughout the city.
Another one of my favorite aspects of New York life is the inclusive mindset of a lot the city's inhabitants. One of the first things I noticed about the city was the mixture of different people from all walks of life. People of different races, ethnicities, languages, religions, countries, and backgrounds all come together in one iconic city. The idea of diversity and acceptance amongst all people factors into why I love New York City. I would love to meet and work with all different types of people, opening my eyes to things I never knew
Why are outsiders so fascinated with New York Is it the way that our city is portrayed by producers & directors? To the typical native New Yorker there is nothing special about the location in which we live it’s just average. the common notion to outsiders it that new York is this great city surrounded by fashion, gilts and glamour, normally they think of Manhattan which includes one world trade, the empire state building, central park, etc. people who aren’t from our city don’t know what it’s like to live here, they don’t understand what it takes out of someone to constantly put up with the stench, the noise, the exorbitant prices of everything & the long unending winters.
When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
It is easy to fall into the trap of believing that Times Square has always been the magical place that it is today. This however is far from the reality, and truth of Times Square’s unique history. Makagon (2004) writes in his book, that city officials became increasingly aware of the importance of enriching the general atmosphere of Times Square. (p. 51). City officials wanted Times Square to be seen more than solely a place of crime, and a city full of porno theatres (Makagon, 2004, p. 51). How did Times Square go from a trashy city, to one of the most popular borough’s in the country? This incredible change is characterized by the term, “Disneyfication” (Makagon, 2004, p.50). Disneyfication turned Times Square from a “seedy porno district”, into a place where entertainment is described as, “family friendly” (Makagon, 2004, p.51). It appears this systematic change did wonders for the “city that never sleeps”. The city known for its Broadway shows, amazing restaurants, and the dazzling lights was once irrelevant in the country which is a under looked aspect to Times Square
Without a doubt, Times Square in New York City is a unique experience, but the image created by TV and movies does not show the gloominess that accompanies the euphoria of being in the Big Apple. The atmosphere is so exhilarating and exciting, you don’t even know what to do for a few minutes, but it is tinged with the bitter reality that sadness and melancholy also trail closely behind the positive. With most, if not all, of your senses being stimulated – sometimes all at once – Times Square creates a memory that will surely be cherished, and haunt you for the rest of your life.
Earth was once a very different place. Before the human population grew to billions and began to travel distances beyond belief, wild animals and ancient forests governed the land. Peter Miller wrote an article, titled “Before New York” for National Geographic, that investigated how Eric Sanderson’s studies uncovered how Manhattan looked and operated as Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor for the first time. It may be hard to imagine Manhattan as anything other than a huge, busy, concrete jungle, home of countless skyscrapers, but it used to be diverse in wildlife. "If the island had stayed the way it was back then, it could have become a national park like Yosemite or Yellowstone," said Sanderson, an ecologist at the Wildlife Conservation
