A Double Life
Where a person was raised could impact and shape that person into who they are presently. Every location is different in its own way and teaches a different variety of lessons. Growing up, I got to experience two very different neighborhoods. My mother lived on the Northside of Fort Wayne, Indiana and my father lived on the Southside. The two neighborhoods I grew up in shaped me into the person I am today. I’ve learned to be proper, how to make and manage money, and the importance of education.
One of the major location moves my mother made was moving from the Southside of Fort Wayne to the Northside. The Northside was completely different from the Southside when I was growing up. After moving to my northern neighborhood, I immediately

Growing up on the Southside, I learned how to make and manage money efficiently. Learning financial responsibility at a young age has impacted me a lot. It has shaped me into a financially stable individual and I am proud of that. Not everyone has money to waste, so my father taught me how to invest my money in something and sell it to make a profit. I was also taught how to save my money and separate my wants from my needs. Identifying wants and needs makes a huge impact on spending. Buy nice items is fine to dooccasionally, but saving is important for financial success. Managing money and budgeting is important to me and I criticize myself if I go over budget sometimes. Not having money all the time is something I do not like going through and I never want that to happen again. Having these skills and a passion to stay on track financially has impacted my relationship with money. Now, I am a financial service major and I am continuing to use the lessons I learned at a young age.
The importance of education is a lesson I learned from both neighborhoods. I was taught that having a high education level and excelling is how to get ahead in life. Education is the major key needed to be successful in life. In both neighborhoods, education was the main goal to reach. Knowledge is very important to obtain because it is so powerful. Education is crucial to me, because it is going to get me where I want to be in life. I take
Thesis: Growing up in a certain neighborhood doesn’t have to determine where you go in life.
Through programs that directly fuel desegregation in schools, our educational systems have become a melting pot of different races, languages, economic status and abilities. Programs have been in place for the past fifty years to bring student that live in school districts that lack quality educational choices, to schools that are capable of providing quality education to all who attend. Typically the trend appears to show that the schools of higher quality are located in suburban areas, leaving children who live in “black” inner-city areas to abandon the failing school systems of their neighborhoods for transportation to these suburban, “white” schools. The environment in which you live shapes up your life, it determines who you become. Many people grow up in a great environment full of good influences, but that's not the case for everyone. There's several children that grow in an environment that has many negative influences especially for children. For instance, in the book Black Boy Richard Wright grew up in an environment full of violence, poverty, and racism. Those traits affected Richard Wright throughout his entire life. Richard Wright had trouble adapting to many things in life, and struggled a lot
As a child, I moved around most of my childhood. From the violent city of Compton, California to the upper middle class of Los Angeles, California, Then later to Elk City, Oklahoma.
Happiness is fake, like something forced upon me; something not real, fabricated and I don’t like it. I’m supposed to like it though. I’m supposed to like everything the government forces on me. I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t feel content with my life, everyone else seems to be perfect while I’m falling apart at the seams.
Social identities and factors and/or experiences that have shaped your worldview. My Ethnic and cultural traditions and values have molded my social identities, in which both my Ethnic and cultural traditions and values and social identities have formed my worldview. According to my social identity wheel: My race is Asian/Pacific Islander and Filipino American. My ethnicity is Filipino. My sexual orientation is heterosexual. My religion is Roman Catholic. My age is of a young adult. I am a female. My national origin is the United States of America. My sense of who I am is based on my ethnic group that I have identified myself to belong in.
One could say I had lived in “the bad area of town.” Maybe I did, I don’t really think of it like that. I considered my home, my neighbors, my community, wonderful. My parents didn’t like visiting very often. Corrupted by the stereotypes of society that suggested living in a neighborhood with people unlike my parents was actually a shameful act. It made them frown upon my way of living.
Identity. What is identity? One will say that it is the distinct personality of an individual. Others will say that identity is the behavior of a person in response to their surrounding environment. At certain points of time, some people search for their identity in order to understand their existence in life. In regards, identity is shaped into an individual through the social trials of life that involve family and peers, the religious beliefs by the practice of certain faiths, and cultural awareness through family history and traditions. These are what shape the identity of an individual.
“Where you come from” influence almost all factors in your life. It can make you or break you. It makes you who you are today and what you will become in the future. If you came from humble beginnings you might make it a goal of yours to not put your family through that and have money, just as it could also make you value the little things in life.
Let’s say someone lives in bad part of town, they might be a little more tough than someone who lives in a small neighborhood. The things happening around you, good or bad, all affect you. I was raised in a small town and learned to treat people how you want to be treated. Where you were raised might be different than me and it contributes greatly. In Sweet Potato Pie by Eugenia Collier, Buddy’s family lives in poverty.
Although I was born in Texas, my father was transferred when I was just ten and I spent most of my impressionable years in a tiny village a few minutes from a national park. This move to a rural area was an event that changed my life forever. Surrounded by beautiful forests and lakes, most of my free time was spent romping through the woods, navigating rivers in a canoe and camping in the many provincial parks nearby.
The location of my birth, where I grew up, and where I currently reside has molded me into the person that I am today. I was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and lived in Madison Heights, Michigan until I was 4 years old. My family then moved to Warren, Michigan where I have resided for 16 years. In my childhood home, we spoke English. Likewise, in my current home, we speak
Saint Augustine once said, “Lord let me know myself, let me know you.” This simple statement is often referred to as “double knowledge” and is the foundation for growth and development. Like many, I believe that in order for us to strengthen our relationship with God, we must first know ourselves better. The more we are able to understand ourselves-our confidential thoughts, hidden sins, and disordered desires- the more we are able to recognize our need for God’s grace. Many times it is those closest to us who help to aid us in this process. Personally, I found help in my closest friend, Madie.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
