When comparing my Big Five Personality scores to the class average, I received a score of 6 and the average was 5.7, one score did not come to a surprise. My personality is reliant on my strength of conscientiousness. Individuals who score high in conscientiousness tend to be methodical, well-organized, achievement orientated, and ethically guided. The conscientious personality type has a strong correlation to leader emergence which I can attest is true. I often am the first individual in the group to take reigns because of my organization, self-discipline, and need to create a plan before acting.
Theodore Roosevelt was quoted to say “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care”. (www.goodreads.com) Proverbs 20:5 says “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out”. (Bible, KJV) These two quotes are within the fabric of a belief system that starts out with the idea that “it is not about me”. Empathy is important because workers, or managers, will ‘feel’ from a leader, the fact that, he understands their experiences. As a leader, it is not just knowing with the mind, but feeling with the heart the experiences of people within their leadership. This is important because it shows the genuine character. Compassion follows empathy, which is “Sympathetic consciousness of other’s distress, together with a desire to alleviate it”. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2015) A leader that shows the ability to help create a better atmosphere for their managers, workers and even clients, will invoke confidence that their leader cares more about people than business. As a servant leader develops he should always keep aware of those who he serves and strive to ensure that they are becoming healthier, wiser, freer, have an increase in autonomy, and become more like servants themselves (2005).

Perhaps the most important qualities of a leader are passion and motivation. Especially when leading a group for a particular cause, a leader must be personally attached to that cause. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, is a legendary leader because he fought for a cause that directly affected him. had he not been pushing for a personal reason, his actions would not have been as passionate. This would have caused a lack in motivation, another essential leadership quality. A leader faces many roadblocks and opposition and thus, must be motivated to continue fighting and leading.
