Hi, my name is Mary Doe , and I am a co-founder of Room to Read.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself.
I have always loved to read. In fact, Dr. Seuss’s children’s books were my favourite and I still keep them in my shelves today. Reading filled my imagination and gave me inspiration since childhood that still impacts me today.
I can only think of a few things that are more powerful than a book.
Though many of the people around us enjoy the luxury of having access to libraries and books everyday, that is not the case for the vast majority of people around the world.
Please consider the following statistics:
759 million people cannot read or write
98% live in the developing world
2/3 are girls and women
This is the very reality that is describing our world right now.
Illiteracy impacts very significant groups of populations in the world today.
That is not going to change; the cycle of poverty is going to continue, if we don’t do something about the education of all of those individuals who suffer from illiteracy.
That is why I am here today, to share about my passion for providing education for these people along with my fellow co-founder and friend, John Wood here.
So how did I discover this idea? Let me take you back to the mid 1990s.
I was working at Goldman Sachs, a company with investment banking. And I quit Goldman and joined Unilever in Vietnam. Back then, Vietnam had just opened up to foreign investment, and it was very exciting for me.
I had a great 3 years living there and helping my company grow in business. However, during those 3 years, it has made me realize something. Education is the absolute key to pulling yourself out of poverty.
So I joined a community service t...

Our main ways of spreading our message is through Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter, 3 of the most popular social medias in the world right now.
We have been able to provide higher education opportunities for children, which will empower them to make great life decisions and help them make their dreams become reality.
We have the power to eradicate illiteracy, and it starts from each of you.
It is my dream to have all the children to be able to turn their dreams into reality despite their birthplace and their circumstances.
Help make the world a better place by providing more children with a higher level of education. I would like to conclude this by leaving you a quote. As blablaba said, “the key to developing solutions is an educated population.”
The advancements that are rewarded with a higher degree of education will enable poverty-stricken families to a better way of living. Which will provide a higher income, medical insurance for health problems, better education, and better housing opportunities. This is another area that my studies will enhance my ability to work as a social worker.
The question “Why is there so much poverty in the United States?” has such a broad spectrum of issues. There is no simple cure or single cause of poverty. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “the 2011 Poverty Guidelines are $10,890 for a single member household and $22,350 for a family of four” (par 13). In addition, “families’ incomes that fall below the threshold given, means that every individual in the household are considered to be in poverty” (par 13). Poverty is too complex an issue to be the result of just one problem, but we can narrow down the subject, to show the effects of how the lack of education can diminish our countries resources and how that has a ripple effect on future generations. Without an education, people receive lower pay; there is an increased rate of crime, and a higher reliance on state and federal aid, which is draining economically.
Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.
Lizzie was observed in the library making noise and asked one of the staff members if they have toys in the library and stated, “I am bored its nothing here to do, but look at books.”
Books represents an important medium for exchange of information and sharing of ideas that is widely used from ancient times to transfer knowledge from one person to another reading
As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
Libraries are accessible to almost everyone in the country. For a couple of dollars we are given access to thousands of books and works of literature. They hold all different types, but the treasure trove is in the well loved books, the books that we can open up and see the borrowing card filled with names from the 1950’s. These books are precious, for their meanings and messages have yet to change. Students still read these books in school as well and it is incredibly important that they continue to for these are the books that every generation can relate to, that every generation can discuss. A child born in 2010 can sit down with their grandparents who were born in 1940 and discuss
I used to have to take these tests about all the books I would read in school and I would always ace them all. I knew that reading was something I liked because I was always very intrigued by it. Also in middle school I found my true writing voice. I remember taking a creative writing class in six grade and I was always the student who wrote more than what was expected for my writing assignments. I would write stories about things such as my friends and the experiences that I had in school. Sometimes I would even write my own plays and in my plays the characters would be people in family and people from school. I would always try to make the plot super interesting in my plays. One time I wrote a play about my brothers and me traveling to space and finding aliens. Overall, I really fell in love with literacy throughout my middle school years because I was able to read books more at an advance level and I also was able to write more intense stories. Literacy has been a positive influence in my life all throughout my school
One of the greatest social problems seen in our county today is poverty. There are many different reasons for why this is a problem in today’s society. Rather then focusing on why this is a problem and point fingers for why this has happened over the years to society the main goal should be to focus on how to help these people and how to stop the next generation from having to suffer from this social problem. There are many ways to help with this problem one of the most important things is to help those in need now, next is to educate the next generation in how to climb out of poverty, and finally is for the next generation to change the why the government supply’s the different types of aid to those in need. Poverty is something that can be fixed its just going to take a matter of time. The way we are going to do this is by teaching society to not except poverty as a option and that they can be successful it just takes a little bit of effort.
It should be clear to anyone that the role of the library in modern society is changing. No longer is (free) adulthood education confined only to that knowledge which resides within the bound paper of a physical book - the internet has usurped the book from its throne. However, does this development make libraries obsolete, and if not, what are they to become? Some sources claim that libraries should simply be done away with, that their welcome has been overstayed - in contrast, though, many others argue that although their role may no longer be the one it was created for, libraries are still important to many people as a gathering place, and have become an access point to the internet, or even just a calm, undistracting environment in which to read.

Books prove to be a very powerful tool, as they help us to understand the world around us. The world is surrounded by literature everywhere one turns, whether it is a novel in a classroom, a newspaper, or even an advertisement on the side of a bus. The core of our education is based upon books, we are constantly gaining knowledge such as when we learn about history by reading the newspaper or a textbook. Multiple well renowned authors are very influential as they are capable of widening our perception to different aspects of society. Without literature, we would remain ignorant to the world around us.
