Ethical Professionals
Ethics exist all around us and drive our everyday decisions. Professionals in any career perform based on their personal values and morals, as well as implementing the ethical duties required by the organization they work for. At times our personal ethics may not align with our professional ethical responsibilities, however, we do not have to bury our views and beliefs to respect those of others. Of course, as professionals in order to perform our practice properly, we must follow our codes and guidelines. But, we can also apply our own personal ethics such as trustworthiness, kindness, and hard work. Similar interactions can occur in other professions as well. The sole responsibility of a healthcare professional is acting in the best interest of the patient. “At the same time, this can present difficulties if they become aware of laws, regulations, or policies that negatively affect patient welfare. For example, a facility policy may require that patients be given medications that are less effective than more expensive products in an attempt to control costs or conform to insurance company requirements” (Mitchell & Haroun, 2015). So, in this particular dilemma, one may find it to be against there ethical beliefs. But, it is not appropriate to discuss any problems one may feel towards the system with their clients. This could cause alarm in the patients’ because they could begin to doubt the care they are receiving. The best thing to do is take into account the patient’s concerns and discuss any possible changes that could benefit the system. They define the choices we make daily and allow us to classify right from wrong. In my life ethics drives me to be the best version of myself I possibly can be. Of course, it is a work in progress because there is always something that can be improved. According to the book, Ethical Dimensions in the Health Professions, ethics is defined as, “…a systematic study of and reflection on morality: ‘systematic study of’ because it is a discipline that uses special methods and approaches to examine moral situations, and ‘reflection on’ because it consciously calls assumptions about our morality into question” (Doherty & Purtilo, 2016).
