Ethics will have various effects on my personal and professional life. There are many different theories and principles that can be easily applied to my life. Four examples of these theories would be utilitarianism, virtue, deontology, and the golden rule. These theories will have differing sizes of impact in my life. Some may be harder to incorporate into my personal life compared to my professional life, others may only slightly change how I currently act in any given situation. Utilitarianism is a good example of an ethical theory that could be applied to my professional and personal life. This would mean that following one’s obligation would be considered morally correct, and someone who does not follow through on their obligations is morally wrong. Someone who follows this theory not only adheres to his obligations, but also follows the law while doing so. The deontological theory’s concept is the opposite of Utilitarianism, “the ends do not justify the means.” This theory would be very easy to implement in both my personal and professional life. In my personal life, if a friend invites me to do something on a day that I already have plans, I would decline his invitation because of my prior obligation. Even if this new invitation is to do something I would consider more fun, it would be morally wrong according to the deontological theory to accept his invitation and cancel my prior obligation. In my professional life, it may be harder to implement. Right now I work in a grocery store where multiple managers can be scheduled at the same time. One manager might give me a task at the beginning of my shift, then while working on that task the other manager may ask me to do something else. It may be hard to tell the second manager that I am unable to do his task because I am already busy with the first manager’s task. They might misunderstand and find it rude or even disrespectful that I would not complete their task before the other task I was
